mp3: listenlisten - "I Rise" Review by Brian Tucker There's a feeling of carefulness throughout Dog . It's not specifically in any one area, its lyrics or its general low-key state of playing, but just in the album's tone as a whole. Dog is a church-like affair with varied guitar playing, from traditional to fuzzed out. It is somber and bombastic in the best of ways, beginning and ending like a seminal one-time radio transmission on an old Wilco. [...]

On Tuesday (I know, sorry it took so long) I went to a private loft for a show that Spirit Family Reunion was playing. The loft was on S.5th and Bedford and you had to RSVP to get in. When I go there I chatted with the dude who lives there and was throwing the party. He said the show was the first of many to come. The loft space itself is huge room with a kitchen off to the side. It's a great

They say that every human will get colon cancer someday if they lived long enough, and maybe following that same line of logic we'd all be blind as well, considering we managed to eke out a lengthy enough existence. If we assumed those things were true it might change how we thought about everyday occurrences. For instance, 'if we're all going blind then why bother blogging?' Melancholic Houston folk act Listen, Listen bring up similar themes on their upcoming Dog LP due out in November. If deaf comes to everyone why bother talking (or [...]

Sunday, September 13, 2009 Those of you who know me probably know I write whole album reviews over at Austin Sound. Well, two albums I took home to review in the past couple weeks have stood out as particularly impressive (if a little underwhelming at times, in the case of Loose Leaves). Let's discuss: Listenlisten - Hymns From Rhodesia I love you Austin, but recently some of the most exciting new "Austin music" has been outsourced to Houston, namely to Listenlisten's new album Hymns [...]

Just off tour and releasing a new record this month are listenlisten. This is sure to be a show you can't miss. From what we hear "Hymns From Rhodesia" is quite the record. Look at the album art above. How can you go wrong? The show kicks off around 8pm with what looks to be a great line-up of folky goodness. We do not know how much the CD will cost or the door, but bring some extra cash so you can get your money's worth and more for the night. Buy Me Now ArtStorm Records has released a 500 count CD-R release with tracks self recorded at the News on the March Studio. An impressive lineup of a CD to run into while looking for the remote, but easily the first thing i had to play at a 5am kind of night. I was definitely excited to hear rare unreleased recordings of some my favored bands to blowup this Summer 2009. Two tracks released by each artists with just about a day of time spent in a cabin studio on two cross streets somewhere in the [...]
With a spirit that conjures images of deep, dark woods from a bygone era, listenlisten 's sound is communal, often featuring a chorus of chanting voices bolstered by gently plucked guitars, swelling horns, and swirling strings.
