by teepoo On Tuesday Papermaps had their EP release for Inferior Ghost . It was part of the New Music live event that happens every Tuesday at the Horseshoe. I arrived early so I caught the sets of Toronto's Secret Suburbia and UK's Little Barrie . To be honest they weren't really my thing. Their songs suffered from overdrawn solos that made them sound the same after a while. Secret Suburbia had a [...]

Fiery, garage-surf UK darlings Little Barrie have announced a string of rare North American dates in August. The band most recently released 2012's King of the Waves , on Tummy Touch Records, which has garnered accolades from publications around the globe including NME, The Sun, Magnet Magazine , and Relix . As Seattle's The Stranger deftly said, "Once in a while, a modern band will ape retro gestures and [...]

Thanks for tuning in. I live to turn folks on to new music, so I’ll be checking in every week with two or three new albums (i.e. from the last six months) that are worth a listen. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your new favorite band. This week I’m looking across both oceans at our Anglophonic rock and roll brethren… Pond: Beard, Wives, Denim Heading over the Pacific, let’s start off the column with my favorite new discovery of 2012: [...]

By Bruce Rave This is a UK 3-piece fronted by Barrie, the killer guitar player. They combine 602s influenced garage and blues. There's a line on the band's site that Barrie's guitar sounds like Dwayne Eddy with a distortion pedal. Their sound is far more than that, but that vibe definitely applies to "Surf Hell". They played in LA this past Thursday and were killer despite having just arrived from London that afternoon. They will play dates in Seattle, Portland, Oakland, and San Diego this coming [...]

Thursday's things: ► Chuck Ragan and Hot Water Music are back with their first album since 2004. "Exister" came out last week to a warm embrace from longtime fans. The quartet celebrates its release with a sold-out show tonight at the Satellite. ► U.K. rock ’n’ soul trio Little Barrie — fronted by Primal Scream/Paul Weller/Edwyn Collins collaborator Barrie Cadogan (and including Virgil Howe, son of Yes's Steve, on drums) — visits the Bootleg Bar behind last summer's release "King of the Waves." Auditorium and Willoughby open. ► [...]

It's been quite a while since I put up an interview, but here are two that I finished last month and finally got around to editing. The UK's Little Barrie have gotten rave reviews for their latest "King Of The Waves," which I reviewed back in February. Lead guitarist Barrie Cadogan couldn't have been any nicer to me, and its a shame his last concert in NYC was on a weekday where I couldn't get out. Check out the interviews page or listen to the interview directly. [...]

Frank Yang A better writer might be able to come up with some angle that relates the sudden one-day cold snap that hit Toronto on Saturday and the long-awaited, much-anticipated local debut by Mr Charles Bradley at Lee's Palace, but sadly, all I can come up with is something like how it was cold outside but hot inside and that's pretty weaksauce, so I'll just move on. A little surprisingly, support for this tour came from across the Atlantic in the form of English power trio Little Barrie , who were [...]

Photos by G. Little Barrie On February 6, 2012, Britain's Little Barrie performed a very intimate VIP only gig at Rose Bar in New York City. The hour long set was performed for the likes of music industry royalty such as Andy Roarke from The Smiths (and of course myself!) Taking place at the swanky Rose Bar, the venue was a nice lounge with a great sound system and an upscale hipster vibe. If you don't know the music of Little Barrie, you're in for a treat. Their songs [...]
Already causing such a huge splash in Japan that they've had to block out entire floors of hotel rooms to keep their obsessive fans at bay, the UK's LITTLE BARRIE are riding their wave of unique brand of fiery, surf-infused rock 'n' roll into North America in February on a string of dates with Charles [...]

Our sixth guest top ten comes courtesy of our very own Chris T Popper, a small but perfectly formed (and often irritating) younger sibling who has been stealing my records since he had invisible friends as a small child. Chris T Popper’s Top 10 10. Little Barrie – Tip It Over The Nottingham trio start off my top 10 with the fabulous Tip It Over . Heavy guitar providing a great riff coupled with a momentum that creeps up on you. There’s some [...]

With probably the longest entry of 2011 we give the floor to regular MM contributor and top ten compiler...Dr Roddy. Well it seems to be that time of year again. I always spend 340 days looking forward to doing this and 25 agonising over it. This year especially though, as I think there has been a bumper harvest of great songs. When I looked at my Top Ten playlist (with over 100 songs in it) I just thought one thing: bugger! I got there in the end though. There have been certain parties that have tried [...]
