Ever wonder why so many emerging bands coming out of the gum trees down under lately? Well, for one, like Sweden, they get lots of community and governmental support to assist them in their formative stages. For example, The Seed Fund, founded by John Butler (John Butler Trio) and Danielle Caruana in 2005 and is more recently funded by the who's who of the Australian Music Industry was formed in the last 5 years to help emerging artists. The Seed aims to help Australian artists from any background, creating art and music across any genre, to establish [...]

Afternoon vagabonds! Here's a pretty little ditty from Little Birdy to get you through the remainder of your Friday duties. "Brother" is the opening track on their 2009 release by the name of "Confetti", and features guest vocals and harmonica from Australian music legend Paul Kelly. Katy Steele, 25-year-old singer/songwriter/guitarist, reflects, "It was hard showing the band that song because it seemed so obvious and simple. It was so personal that it felt like standing naked in front of someone and going…here I am!" Amen for obvious, [...]

Not only have I neglected my blog this last little while, but I've also been quite lax in my contribution to the Contrast Podcast. Last week I was all ready to return triumphant to an episode concerning The Hair , but I was scuppered by my cold and my subsequent croaky voice. I don't go all husky when I have a cold but sound more like a frog in the final throes of death. I was planning on contributing a gorgeous track by the now defunct Carissa's Wierd. You can check this out below, plus a couple [...]

little birdy - brother "my brother, he taught me how to fly. my papa, he taught me how to cry." and so begins one of our two latest song obsessions (the other coming tomorrow), the plaintive, raw & oddly infectious opening track of australian foursome little birdy 's third album confetti . be sure, if you haven't heard this one yet, to hang on till about the minute forty mark; you'll see what we're talking about.

riø Jeff The Brotherhood - "Mind Ride" Buddy, you're getting pretty drunk. You look like you're at sea, a bit. Like, the sea on valium. You're eyes are like clotheslines, you could hang a sweater from that stare. You talk like you're already throwing up, like you're afraid the words might slip back down your throat. You're checking your pockets for your consonants. You're holding a speaker up to one ear like a pillow or an important call. You're dismissing everyone for offenses they haven't [...]

Above video 'Baby Blue', from the 2003 debut EP Little Birdy . I haven't caught up with Little Birdy's May release Confetti yet, but I was reminded of it this afternoon when I rediscovered opening track 'Brother' during an iPod purge. This track got to stay, not only for the typically excellent vocals by lead singer Katy Steele, but also for Paul Kelly's stellar backing and harmonica work. Was intending to do a nice and peaceful Sunday post to get everyone to relx prior to the day of death (monday). Got caught up skating and falling over etcetera and only got around to doing it today, mainly concerns a delightfully chilled beat and something a little different. Not feeling very... well anything, in other words haven't got anything worthwhile to spiel so here you go. Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows (M83 Remix) and Little Birdy are releasing a single in 2 weeks by the name [...]
For most of us, it's cold, snowy, and downright miserable outside. But in many respects, this week is also one of celebration. For one, we're currently taking in the sights and sounds of Chicago's Tomorrow Never Knows Festival , and if you've been reading our coverage, you'll know it's been unbelievably awesome. But that's really only the beginning, as in the coming hours and days, we'll be unveiling a few more goodies that would warm even the coldest of souls. So until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. TNK Fun: [...]

Last year I saw Little Birdy live twice. The Perth indie rockers put on a fantastic show, full of energy and crowd interaction. They've been in the studio this last little while, recording their new album which is yet to be given a title, but will include the track 'Brother' which features iconic Aussie artist Paul Kelly on harmonica and backing vocals. I'm glad to hear that Katy Steele's vocals are as strong and powerful as ever. What's different about this track in comparison to some of their older stuff is that, while their [...]

I definitely would not call myself a Little Birdy fan. I have their debut album, 'Bigbiglove', but it isn't something I listen to regularly. But whenever I put it on, it's hard to deny that it isn't great. This is largely due to the vocals of front woman, Katy Steele, which define their sound. It's hard to describe her voice, seductive? luscious? sweet? either way, it's very special. It really is no surprise, considering she is the sister of the freak/genius, Luke Steele (The Sleepy Jackson). The band supports these vocals very well and their overall sound comes [...]
