In a memorable mid January as the Northern Lights played spectacularly over Sweden, Kristian Matsson was burrowed at home warmly writing the follow up to The Wild Hunt and Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird EP - his two releases for 2010. Over the weekend, The Tallest Man On Earth debuted a new track for a delighted South African audience, to signify his first ever performance in the country. Titled 'Little Brother', you can hear that signature finger-picking and ruminative vocal that we hold in high [...]

Black Star performed the song, "Little Brother" , with the Roots on the Jimmy Fallon Show last night. (I'm going to link the video a lot because it's cuss-in-front-of-your-grandma good.) Afterword, ?uestlove explained why he loves the song so much and the story behind how the late J Dilla came to produce the beat. If you're on the fence, ?uestlove said this about the song/performance: "Scientifically this is one of the most intricate Hip Hop songs ever crafted. This was the greatest thing I've ever witnessed in my life." [...]
This is another great story from Uncle Ahmir. ?uesto took some time out after Blackstar's performance on Late Night Jimmy Fallon last night to share the story behind the making of J. Dilla's beat for their song 'Little Brother.' I can't wait for the day ?uestlove releases his book. The posts on 'that site' alone are legendary enough. via NBC
Normally this time of year, you're subjected to an endless array of "best of" lists - best albums, dopest mixtapes, breakout artists, etc. This list is a little different, though. Two weeks ago, The Roots released undun , the group's first ever concept album, which depicts the quick demise of semi-fictional character Redford Stephens over a dark assortment of hollow grooves and lush arrangements. With undun , the Philadelphia band tells the story backwards, beginning with Redford's death and detailing the actions that ordered his steps. A good concept album weaves an [...]

Rapper Big Pooh - Dirty Pretty Things For Members Only: 2011 On his most recent project, Fat Boy Fresh — For Members Only, Vol. 1 , Rapper Big Pooh seemed vigorous, filling the assorted instrumentals with passionate bars of struggle and perseverance, proclaiming his independence as a solo artist and solidifying his presence as a formidable MC. It's not like the honesty was anything new. As one-third of Little Brother, Pooh was the most streamlined, opting for a raw approach while Phonte's wordplay was more complex, light-hearted and comical. Still, [...]
In this month's issue of The Source, cover boy Drake dished out his top five albums of all time. One "album" that made the list was Little Brother's ...And Justus [...]
Dope beats, dope rhymes, this hip-hop sh*t really ain't that hard. Enjoy this playlist of some of my favorite hip-hop tracks. Don't be quick to judge what isn't on the list, since putting literally every good hip-hop song is impossible. Enjoy! AZ - Gimme Yours Apathy - True Love (ft. Phonte) Jay Rock - Get On Your Shit [...]
I'm sorry, am I the only one that finds this track funny? I mean, sure it is a pretty dope song, but all three MCs rapping here are definitely the lesser skilled member of their respective groups. Nothing against them, of course, Little Brother, Slum Village, and Tribe all made a great impressions on hip-hop. Anyway, enough of my snark, let's talk about the remix, which was originally seen on Pooh's Dirty Pretty Things , a solid solo effort indeed. All jokes aside, this is pretty awesome hip-hop. In fact, it is great seeing these three group-goers turned solo [...]

Zap - Black Milk and Danny Brown - New project from Black Milk and Danny Brown (Black and Brown) is sure to be dope. Black Milk's production is so fucking good. Truly holds it down for Detroit. Blue Jeans remix - Lana del Rey - Penguin Prison Remix - Love her… They Say - Rapper Big Pooh featuring Chokolate - New joint from 1/3 of Little Brother, Big Pooh. He brings Chokolate in on this.

After growing up surrounded by hip-hop, in my late teens I moved to a place where underground hip-hop heads were scarce, and I primarily had to rely on myself to find under-the-radar emcees and producers. Without much in the form of exterior stimulation, I used mixes as a way to listen closer to new musical finds. I made a number of mixes in the tape era, but with the first CD-burner I purchased in '98 or so, hip-hop mixes for myself became routine. They were quickly assembled and provided with no tracklist; simply labeled in numeric order starting with "Mix [...]

Light Snacks - Curren$y - Spitta back with another heater. Eternally - Phonte ft Median - Phonte just dropped a dope album that you should all go out and buy. In the meantime, here's a jammer featuring Median. The Root - Roberts and Lord - D'Angelo cover - Roberts and Lord back on the blog with a jammer cover of D'Angelo's "The Root". Peep the last cover I posted a few days back of The Beatles' Because. [...]
