My Chemical Toilet's roving review machine John-Scott Croly went to check out some up-and-comers on the latest Levi's Ones To Watch Tour, so he did. The band selector for the Levi's OnesToWatch tour (for argument's sake let's call her Jean) is seemingly able to predict with unerring accuracy the bands that will be soundtracking our iPod commercials and adorning our NME-reading teenage relatives' bedrooms walls twelve months down the line. Given the name and premise of the tour, this surely makes her very good at her job. Of course I'm fully aware [...]
Before we dive into some new music, I just want to wish Merz, author of the fine blog Mars Needs Guitars , best of luck as he deals with some personal issues. Merz, I'm just right up US1; if there's anything I can do to help out, just send up a flare. Actually, pyrotechnics aren't really necessary...just send me an email and I'll be there for you any way I can bro. • • • • Cleeman is a one-man project comprised of Danish downtempo singer and multi-instrumentalist Gunnar [...]
MUSIC NEWS - NYC rock and soul outfit, The Little Death reminds MNN of the time when 60s rock bands first discovered the Blues, but instead of just imitating those who adopted it, The Little Death takes their cues and choses to take their own road, thru individual rock roots and drowning themselves in the Deep South sound. Everything about the band embodies the grassroots time period, with each member having equal say and equal stake in the band, based on a mentality of veteran musicians and [...]
Remember way back in January we put Little Death on at Madame Jo Jo's? Their drummer neglected to turn up (we think he left or was never found after that night) but they played a wonderful stripped back set in support of Kyte . Well, we've just caught a glimpse of their new video that you should watch, it's like one of those domino effect set-ups but with more fire, a lot more fire, and hell it's good... Enjoy. Little Death - Cool Lips [...]
The pop/punk blend is a feeling I really can never get enough of, at least when it's done right. Pete & The Pirates are a band from Reading, England, they formed in 2005 and have since released two official EPs. Their sound is a mix of 80s post punk and 90's American indie rock, fresh. Mr. Understanding is from their 2008 critically acclaimed LP, Little Death . The songs melody is as infectious as they come, the lyrics are simple yet meaningful - my favorite kind. Completely forgot about these guys till the ever faithful iTunes shuffle [...]
[Quite a weekend we have in store musically, assuming, that is, that you and I aren't on the invite list for Josh Groban's birthday party:] Friday: Everest is back; the L.A. quintet brings its vivid Americana to the Echo (with the Parson Redheads and Two Sheds ) at the beginning of a West Coast swing that presages more tour dates with Neil Young in April. ... Animal Collective does the second sold-out L.A. night in a row, this one at the Troubadour. ... The Little [...]
Lykke Li played in the Button Factory, Dublin, a few days back. It was clearly the gig to be seen at. The place was packed to the rafters (actually, it was dangerously oversold) mostly with fresh-faced youths whose fashion sense and street-talk confuses and irritates me. Indeed, I don't ever recall feeling like an out of touch, old geezer before, but I did that night. Damn their unwrinkled skin. Overall it was an enjoyable, if not a slightly puzzling, gig. Lykke Li emerged on stage in a whirlwind of wavy energy; tambourine in one hand, drumstick in the [...]
With the bite and bounce of the Pixies and the urgency and zeal of early singles by Ash, Little Death's "Baby Can You Dig Your Man?" hits the speakers with forceful conviction. It's got everything a great indie rock song should have: a good sense of dynamics with guitar, bass, and drums precisely entering and exiting the mix, singy/shouty vocals, guitar riffs which pierce and punch at your ears, and most importantly, a melody that begs for repeat. MP3: Little Death - Baby Can You Dig Your Man? The self titled, self [...]
Maybe it's the coffee talking, but I really like these songs. They make me feel good, what can I say? Perfect for Friday afternoon. Enjoy! This is funky stuff and it will put a groove in your step, I promise. [...]

MP3 :: Moby's side project The Little Death
Apparently Moby has a new side-project called The Little Death that is NOTHING like any of his other works. On the album, Moby picks up the bass and the guitar and leaves behind the drum programming and analog machinery. Other band members of the bluesy soul band are Laura Dawn on lead vocals, Daron Murphy on guitar, bass, and harmonica, and Aaron A. Brooks on drums. Check out the the first released track below .. Finally Friday
It may have been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, but it's been an exciting week (and not in a good way) at Speed of Dark. The story is still in progress, and I am in the process of deciding a plan of action, so I am not ready to tell it all here yet. Maybe one day. But there are big hints in some of the archived posts and little hints in particular elements of today's post, so you might guess the general issue. I've been spending a lot of time on blog business, [...]

Monday EP
Monday, September 22, 2008 Just in case you forgot, Austin City Limits is this weekend. I'm using the excuse of being shunned for press credentials as my reason to not bother covering the festival, but I will be out and around Zilker Park running broadcasts for the radio station that I work for. How about you guys? Any of you actually jazzed for this thing? Here's an EP while you ponder. Enjoy. : The Piano Creeps - Hey Love : This is an [...]
