Little Feat : Let It Roll [ purchase ] By 1988 Little Feat were beyond their commercial prime - their best years by most accounts being the latter part of the 70s. Having lost lead guitarist and founder Lowell George in 1979, the band continued with many of the core members (Paul Barrere on guitar, Richie Hayward on drums, Bill Payne on keyboards ...) through the 80s and 90s. Bill Payne and Paul Barrere still tour today as did Richie Hayward until his death in 2010. Aging rockers they may be, [...]
STG presents Little Feat at the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Tickets cost $35 for advance ticketing or $37 at the door. Show will start at 8:00PM. In his liner notes for Join the Band, Little Feat's 2008, career-summing CD, Bill Payne described their motivation for recording as a way of locating [...]

Little Feat : On Your Way Down [ purchase studio version ] Musicians and bands often do interviews on the radio, and these usually include in studio performances of songs from their current album. These performances have an immediacy to them that can compensate for the lack of polish that can come from hours spent polishing in a recording studio. Radio stations often lack the ability to host all of the technology that was used in the recording, so the musicians must show their versatility. As a result, a side of [...]
Happy 2012 live music freaks! Hope you all had a killer 2011 and finished it off with a bang and some good shows! Last week was obviously a busy week for live music fans in the New York metro area, so naturally, the concert calendar slows down a bit this week as we start the new year. But that's not to say there aren't some great shows to hit...

Lowell George of Little Feat Despite it being a new work week, let's keep the New Year's vibe goin' for just a little longer. Hope you liked that live Doors stuff as much as I did. Today let's dip in to more live music, this time from another band that was always killer on stage - Little Feat. During the early 1970s musicians still hung over from the Sixties scrambled to find a niche for themselves along a musical horizon that was broader than ever. Even with all the choices available at the time, [...]

The recording of this show actually features a nice little introduction from Tricky Dick himself.] Simon & Garfunkel: Late [...]

For this week's B List we found ten videos on YouTube featuring just the guitar players from some of our favorite bands without any accompaniment. When we sat down to put this together, we thought it would be easier to find clips of just the axe-slingers in action without anyone else but it didn't work out that way. Thankfully, after a few hours of digging, we did find ten gems worth sharing. 1. Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey of moe. - Summer Camp Guitar Clinic [...]

In this week's Colour Me installment, GP and the mighty Rumour talk sweet, punkpop pioneers the Dickies speed up a moody blues, while Dublin's finest the Virgin Prunes look for the promised land of milk and honey. Next up, Little Feat finds inspiration in the East, furious Frisco punks the Avengers end up on the dole, and sixties unknowns the Painted Ship tell fuzzy lies in the garage. Inara George: Trouble [ purchase ] Inara George never really knew her father, Little Feat founder, frontman, and primary songwriter Lowell George - he died when she was five, leaving a young Inara to be raised by her mother. But having Jackson Browne as a godfather, and Van Dyke Parks as a family friend, kept her connected to the arts in her blood: she trained to be an actress, and after a high school reunion jam session led to a major label contract, a career in her [...]

Dixie Chicken (1973) is when Little Feat came up with their signature sound. Many fans cite this as the group's best LP. I've always thought their debut was one of the best albums from the time ( Sailin' Shoes is also superb), so I'm not really sure which side of the fence I stand on. Dixie Chicken is a more produced (rich, full sound), laid back affair when compared to the raw eccentricity of those first two albums. Most of the tracks are Lowell George originals but to give you an idea of the influences at work here, the group [...]

Little Feat : Cold, Cold, Cold [ purchase ] Little Feat's Cold, Cold, Cold is a bluesy howl from the gut. It is also a song that may have been released before it was ready. The original version was on the 1972 album Sailin' Shoes. Producer Ted Templeman may be the one who decided how it should be recorded. The song, in this incarnation, sounds like it was recorded inside a cave, and the distortion is not helpful. The performance is good, but Feat could do better, and it doesn't quite [...]

The ownership of band names is a tricky subject, which has filled the wallets of many lawyers thanks to the dozens of lawsuits filed over the years. As the groups of the '60s, '70s and '80s start to age, many acts have had to figure out who has the right to tour under the original name. This week's B List looks at 11 groups with only one original member left in the band as of 2011. There's a variety of reasons why there's only one member left in these bands. [...]

Well, we flip the calendar year over to 2011 and it of course takes me a little while to make the adjustment. Every week [errr, almost every week] when I go to write this piece, the first thing I do is do an Advanced Search on the Live Music Archive for the range of dates from last week. At first I put in 2010 and got a little confused . Right, 2011. OK, back on track. A lot of the selections this week all come from either Jam Cruise or moe's destination concerts down in the Dominican Republic. A [...]
