Those already disenchanted with the shitgaze genre should probably stop reading now. Little Girls is the solo project of Toronto musician Josh Mcintyre (member of the garage punk duo Pirate/Rock ), who recorded the debut album Concepts on his laptop, much of it using the computer's built-in microphone. The result is muddy, distorted as hell and drenched in reverb. It's not the kind of project that will appeal to sound engineers and audiophiles, but his gritty no-fi surf rock sets an effectively ominous mood that makes the album addictive listening. Little Girls' [...]
It's a busy week in music in the city. Check out some of these shows if you have time: Dropkick Murphys, Sound Academy, Nov 19th The celt-punks come back with what is always a rollicking fun rock show. Check out my interview with the band's drummer Matt Kelly here. Dropkick Murphys' Myspace Little Girls w. You Say Party! We Say Die!, The Phoenix, Nov 20th Toronto's own Little Girls team up

We've been on hiatus this week test driving cars and listening to snarky salesmen pitches. What I wanted was a sports car so rad it would magically melt the clothes off any hottie on the street. Alas, what I got was a whole lot different. W e ended up with an affordable and easy on the gas Kia Sportage. I will say for a factory job, the audio system is banging, equipped with Sirius sat radio, a USB connection, iPod/mp3 player jacks. It also comes with all [...]

Seeing as how this is merely an average Monday morning in November, I'm guessing many of you weren't overly psyched to greet the day. Well, let us turn that around quick fast: with a simple email to us you could win yourself 6 beautiful vinyl albums from Paper Bag Records . Yes friend, you read that correctly, not 1, not 2, and not even 3, but 6 lovely vinyl albums. And I do mean lovely (and somewhat rare): All Paper Bag Records vinyl releases are produced in limited quantities on [...]
For those unfamiliar with Halifax, the timid Canadian city performs an annual Megatron-like transformation at the end of each October. Barrington Street goes from mildly intoxicated and raucous to Amy Winehouse on amphetamines with a megaphone. Venues crank subwoofers from comfortable thumping to post-tracheotomy Barry White levels. Mornings involve waking to find a group of [...]

My two favourite musical genres are folk and electro, or, more specifically, electro-pop and folk-rock. The last contest I brought you was folk and pop and quieter stuff, so it's only fitting that now I've got one that showcases my love of dancing (awkwardly). Vancouver band You Say Party! We Say Die! are on tour, promoting their new album, XXXX . The first and only time I saw this band was during this year's NxNE festival at the El Mocambo. Though festival showcases aren't always the best measure of a band's performance prowess, YSP!WSD! didn't [...]

We haven't done a contest/giveaway in a looooooong time and while we at AWmusic.ca have had a rough week (Monday we had our site temporarily shut down) and I've gotten a case of bronchitis or something that's left me very sick. We've got a nice giveaway for the 2009 Steamwhistle Presents You Say Party We Say Die! , Think About Life , Little Girls and DJ Vaneska brought to you by The Musebox . This is a concert to see some great Canadian bands at the Phoenix on November [...]
Today's free MP3 is fuzzy dreampop from Toronto's Little Girls and Greowing

I while back I introduced you to Toronto's Little Girls and the band have just released their debut album Concepts - a fine 30 minutes of noisy-lo-fi alt-rock through Paper Bag Records . Lots of swooping and swelling guitar riffs on the record mixed in with obscured vocals. And yes, it's another "Girls" band to get your teeth into.. Here's the first track from the album in video and MP3 form. Little Girls - Youth Tunes [...]

You Say Party! We Say Die! are hitting up the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto on November 20th in support of their most recent release, XXXX . Joining these British Columbia indie darlings will be DJ Vaneska , Montreal's Think About Life and Toronto's own Little Girls . Expect fun, and dancing. Lots, and lots of dancing! Oh, and by the way. One of you charming readers are getting a pair of tickets to the show. Yeah, baby. All you gotta do is be 19+ and email impressionableyouth@gmail.com with "You [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes: Little Girls "Growing" from Concepts (released on 10/13) [ download ] Field [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , You Oughta Know , Canada Just months into his 20s, Toronto musician Josh McIntyre steps off the stage at Detroit's steamy, seamy Magic Stick to the sound of applause from an enthusiastic and mystified crowd. On a North American tour supporting Vancouver's Japandroids , McIntyre has been debuting material from 'Concepts,' his first album under his Google-mystifying moniker Little Girls, a purposefully anonymous name originally chosen so he could post his music online and get unbiased opinions. But well before [...]

(Josh McIntyre of Little Girls) I've pretty much known all week that I'd be following up my Atlas Sound post with one about Little Girls , but I wasn't sure (and still am not) about what kind of angle I was going to take on it. Back in June I was totally digging the sonic sound collisions Josh McIntyre was posting over at the Little Girls Myspace page, having compared his song "Tambourine" to Pixies doing Joy Division, sounding all gothic surf punk, but the concept of a whole album's worth [...]

All settled in with the "new" Free Music Fridays routine yet? Still free, still music, still Fridays, just every other Friday. And as always, they are all free and legal for you to download and enjoy, just click the band name for the band's site and the song name for the MP3. PLUS, for your edification, the continuation of our nice little visual art education/appreciation theme to go along with your candy, I mean, you gots to eat your vegetables too, right? Or pumpkins as it were.... Right, so this week [...]

As we make our way through fall out here in Halifax, things are finally getting back to business, or rather posting, as usual. The Polaris is over, HPX is over, and so we're back to bringing you that sweet, sweet can-con, errrr, content. And because it's Thursday, that means one thing, Videos! As you might imagine since we haven't run an episode of Video Hits in a while, we've got quite a backlog of them. So if you've sent us a vid in the last few weeks, our apologies, but perhaps send us [...]
Little Girls "Youth Tunes" from the album "Concepts" from Paper Bag Records on Vimeo .

I agree with The Village Voice in that CMJ shows are more like coronations than introductions. While I had a press badge for CMJ via BTR , I didn't end up using it at all. Instead, I took a pretty low-key approach. The shows that I went to were free, unofficial CMJ, non-CMJ, or someone was kind enough to put me on a list. Instead of running around between downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn to see the buzziest of the buzz, I kept to a small list of bands that I'd been wanting to [...]
![Little Girls: Youth Tunes [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2082715_lg.jpg)
Some of the best music videos assault the norm with demented and disturbing scenarios. Take that UNKLE song from a few years back with Thom Yorke at the vocal helm, "Rabbit In Your Headlights". That was downright phenomenal. And "Silent Shout" from The Knife was pretty amazing as well. The latest to pair insanity with audio greatness is Little Girls , whose video for "Youth Tunes" is, above all, creepy. But in madness there is often genius. Just look at painters (Van Gogh) and authors (Pirsig). There have been a fair share [...]
Keeping up with these lo-fi bands is a full-time job, seriously.Little Girls is a Canadian quartet whose music immediately brings Blank Dogs to mind--so it's no surprise to see the band has a 7'' on Captured Tracks. The diligent drum machine, cold vocals, and melodic minimums scream simplicity. It's a sound that puts nothing between the song and the listener. The question is whether or not you
