Apparently JD just got to the part where the dog dies... From time to time, an artist comes along who has the remarkable ability to tap into sounds of the past and both replicate and update them in a way that sounds entirely fresh without sounding gimmicky. The Blasters did it back in the '80s, The Squirrel Nut Zippers in the '90s, Amy Winehouse in the 2000s, and more recently, Adele. Okay, so the Squirrel Nut Zippers may have sounded a little gimmicky at times, but still, they were fully committed to their [...]
The classic C&W weeper gets covered by artists like Al Green, Cassandra Wilson, and... Little Richard??

After watching Ginger & Rosa last night and being completely blown away by the soundtrack I was disappointed through my internet searchings not to be able to find a copy for sale or to download anywhere. It appears that the soundtrack has not been released, however I did make a note of the tracklist at the end of the film and I have published my own youtube version of the tracklist for you to listen to below. Jazz.

This week Wembley Stadium is the site of Olympic soccer action but 40 years ago the former Wembley Stadium played host to its first ever concert, The London Rock N Roll Show. [Purchase The Documentary] The concert featured some of the greatest rock n roll acts of the 1950's: Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Bill Haley and the Comets and Chuck Berry. They were celebrating a revival in interest that began with their 1969 Madison Square Garden concert [...]

mp3: Little Richard - Rip It Up mp3: Little Richard - Ready Teddy I've talked about "double-siders" before and today's 7" vinyl disc perfectly fits that categorisation. Both Rip It Up and Ready Teddy were written in 1956 by John Marascalco and Robert 'Bumps' Blackwell. This isn't surprising as, it's fair to say, they sound pretty similar. But what a sound! The sound of pure excitement. This is blueprint of Rock'n'Roll material. Shortly after Little Richard unleashed this record through Speciatly, Rip It Up was covered by Bill Haley, [...]
The mailbox has been truly kind the past several weeks. Sure, there are still piles of useless dreck to wade through/past/over. But those all get to go to the big box in the dark closet and awai... Continue reading "Mail Dump: Janis, Little Richard, dBs, Donovan, Etc." >

Little Richard : If You Pick Her Too Hard (She Comes Out of Tune) In May of 1972 Little Richard wrapped the last of his string of poorly selling albums for Reprise Records by knocking out ten tracks for the album Southern Child. Despite shooting an album cover with Little Richard milking a cow, Southern Child wasn't released until, get this, January 2005 ( 32 years later on a Rhino Records anthology). You won't find a piano on any track. And you won't hear [...]

So, apparently Little Richard is one of the most important figures in the history of rock-n-roll, even if you're Canadian. Toronto blues-rawk duo Black Pistol Fire are Kevin McKeown and Eric Owen, childhood buds who followed their raggied blues muse to Austin, TX in 2009, where they were discovered by producer Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Von Bondies, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), who eventually helmed the band's self-titled debut. For their sophomore release, Black Pistol Fire have taken a chance and elected to pay their full-length respects to [...]

Roger Daltrey of The Who Our greatest rockers are people who apparently never used their "indoor voice." Why should they? They were future rockers! Anyhow, the other day I was thinking that the one ingredient basic to any good rock and roll song - besides a guitar solo, of course - is a blood-curdling scream. It could be an expression of rage and defiance, like Roger Daltrey's classic scream at the end of "Won't Get Fooled Again," or it can be a cathartic release of pain and frustration, like John Lennon in "Well Well [...]
Little Richard's Tutti Frutti stakes its claim as the beginning of rock 'n' roll. All around, seemingly everywhere, the music was happening. It was colliding and exploding over and over to form its own lusty and resilient genre -- rock 'n' roll. It was the 1950s, and the music was all around, finding itself, finding an audience. Rock 'n' roll, as many historians will argue, may in fact date back to Jackie Brenston's (and Ike Turner's) Rocket 88, recorded in 1951. Then there's Little Richard's Tutti Frutti, first recorded...

A founding text of rock ‘n’ roll Fifty-five years after it’s initial release, Little Richard’s debut LP resounds with the primordial fire of rhythm ‘n’ blues’ jump to rock ‘n’ roll. Richard took everything up a notch – the tempos, the innuendo and above all, the volume and energy of his vocals. Recorded primarily at New Orleans’ legendary J&M studios, Richard was backed by the cream of the Crescent City’s musicians, including Lee Allen, Alvin Taylor, Frank Fields and Earl Palmer. Though the same crew could be heard on other artists’ records, with Richard [...]

There have been many, many recordings released on a variety of formats in the Rock and Roll idiom since Here' Little Richard was released on LP in 1957 by the Specialty label, but I'm not sure any of them are better. Different? Sure. Better? Not in my opinion. In honor of Record Store Day 2012 Specialty (now owned by the Concord Music Group) is re-releasing this album in its original vinyl LP configuration. Sure, the songs have been reissued many times since 1957. I own a CD with all of them plus [...]
