Born in Iowa and raised along the Mississippi River in an 'Addams Family meets 700 Club' home, Little Scream, aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer, emerged onto Montreal's music scene at her own pace, appearing and disappearing on stages alongside the likes of Atlas Sound, Stars, The Sea and Cake, and Handsome Furs; all the while slowly crafting the sounds that would become her debut full length, The Golden Record. Co-produced with Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre), The Golden Record features Little Scream on guitar, vocals, violin, and keyboard. It showcases a healthy slice of local talent including Richard [...]

by Tiana Feng Yesterday, I attended a TEDxOCADU fundraiser that raised funds for future TED events and showcased local Canadian talent. Headlining the night was The Magic (as a full band) but unfortunately I had to leave early so I caught Menalon ft. Little Scream, Sandman Viper Command and Kashka. Opening the night was Kashka the project of Forest City Lover's Kat Burns. She ran the keyboard and electronic bits and was accompanied by a [...]

Our latest Made of Imagination episode with Little Scream is up! This one was my personal favourite, I love Little Scream and I love this re-imagined version of Cannons that she did with a few circuit benders from InterAccess. Watch below and read my behind the scenes, here . Made of Imagination with Little Scream from Free Agency on Vimeo .

Sebastian Mlynarski I expect there's a lot of interest in drawing parallels between the success of Purity Ring with that of Grimes what with both being based out of Montreal - although Purity Ring's Corin Roddick and Megan James originally hail from Edmonton - and releasing albums of electronic pop that seem to be the perfect soundtracks for the zeitgeist circa 2012, and on the same label outside of Canada, no less - the legendary 4AD . But whereas Claire Boucher's work is rather defined by its technicolor ADD-ness and her [...]

Shervin Iainez Rose Cousins is not a new artist. The Charlottetown by way of Halifax artist has been releasing music for the better part of a decade and I've technically heard her before as she's guested on any number of Maritime-born records including Joel Plaskett's, but I'd not heard any of her own material until her third full-length album We Have Made A Spark , released at the end of February. And clearly that's been my loss. It's not a record that stops you in your [...]
Plants and Animals ::: All Photos by Brittney Bush-Bollay I had one of those prolonged "Suburban Dad" moments before I entered the Crocodile. I did a decent parallel parking job on the streets of Belltown. My car wouldn't have been hit if I had just left it be. However, something extremely neurotic took place in [...]

Listen to this track from Little Scream and Richard Parry for the Have Not Been the Same - Vol. 1: Too Cool to Live, Too Smart to Die to benefit Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) by Zunior Music Label alongside other wonderful artists like Cuff the Duke, Kevin Drew and Great Lake Swimmers. With everyone finally back from SXSW in Austin, the local concert calendar also picks up significantly this week. Starting on Monday, The Magnetic Fields begin the first of two night at the Neptune Theatre, followed on Tuesday night with the Drive By Truckers at the Showbox, and local legends Mudhoney bring the noise to the Tractor on Wednesday night. On Thursday, Plants and Animals are at Crocodile, Skream & Benga are at Neumo's, Michael Gira , and Sir Richard Bishop are at Triple Door, and Yppah and Anomie Belle [...]

Derek Branscombe '70s-styled radio rock - the sort marked by tight multi-part harmonies, guitars that go from chunky rhythms to smooth leads like the peanut butter aisle, and a laid back sort of pop songcraft that's inviting like a pitcher of beer on a hot Summer's day - has been back in style lately, and no one's done a better job of repping it locally than Zeus . Their 2010 debut Say Us won them plenty of fans both across Canada and abroad. Somehow amidst all the touring [...]

While Little Scream's sprawling "Boatman" certainly stood out on their debut LP , The Golden Record , I'd yet to find a version to share online that does justice to live takes witnessed at our own SXSW day party and others last year. Now Laurel Sprengelmeyer has gotten the full troupe together for an excellent kitchen-sink attempt in a bare space big enough to capture the energy of this epic piece. What's more, the album's producer, Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire, joined in as the guest drummer along with a full choir. There's a melting pot of [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive Courtesy of Secretly Canadian Clavicyclette. Say it three times fast if you can. Most folks might get a little tongue tied but Montreal singer and multi-instrumentalist Little Scream has it down pat after using the fantastical piano-bicycle in her new video for 'Boatman (Live With The Clavicyclette).' "My friend Ian had come across the clavicyclette, made by a great piano man in Montreal named Spike [...]

Killbeat If we were to spool up the Wayback Machine to November 2006 , you'd find a post where I confessed that sending me a lovely slab of vinyl was a pretty good way to get to the top of my "to listen to" pile... something that apparently still holds true over a half decade later. But as I pointed out even way back then, a listen is not the same as a writeup so I find it comforting to know that Camp Radio still has the goods to impress in whatever format they're [...]
I fell in love with Little Scream after I saw her open for Sharon Van Etten in San Diego. The Golden Record affirmed that initial infatuation and I've grown to deeply love that record over the last year. So when I saw this interview with her for L Magazine I was excited to find that she's authentic and has overcome a lot. She's a powerful woman who works outside of the limitations of what a song could be and for that, I'm a fan. Check out some more videos here .

Working in music the last few years, I've had the chance to collaborate with really incredible people behind the scenes: filmmakers, engineers, graphic designers, writers - those individual's whose art it is to facilitate art. I've often wondered how they got to where they were. I had the opportunity to sit down with La Blogotheque filmmaker Derrick Belcham before he sets off en route to make a La Blogotheque HQ in New York. We met in a Toronto diner to discuss how he got to be where he's at, what Jeff Tweedy smelled like up close [...]

Here is my list of the songs I liked best in 2011, which will be the last one we offer here. I only adhered to three rules with this list, really: 1. The song had to be officially released in 2011, 2. I could only select one song for any artist, and 3. The list [...]

It’s that time of the year again and we’ve procrastinated till the last minute, but have no fear we’ve put together a list of our favorite 50 albums of 2011. This list reflects all of the Vagabonds that contribute throughout the year. We do our best to put it in to some sort of numerical order, but in the end all that matters is that we get to look back and recognize the music that has been soundtrack to our lives all year long. Below are our picks for numbers 50-40 we’ll have another ten for you [...]
