How do you promote a posthumous album by an artist who passed away over 40 years ago? In the case of Jimi Hendrix, whose People, Hell & Angels LP shot towards the top of the Billboard charts recently, you don't have to look far to find someone willing to cover his music. On last night's episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, soul singer Janelle Monáe performed Little Wing with The Roots to help promote People, Hell & Angels - though it wasn't Monáe or The Roots who stole the show. [...]

Let us help you catch up on the week in brief. First we are bummed that Foxygen canceled their tour in the name of the band's "creative health", then electro kraut legends Kraftwerk we learned are banned from playing in China for participating in the Tiebetan Freedom Concert from 1998, and Lil Wayne disclosed that his string of seizures were caused by epilepsy and not the sizzurp. But with plenty more to gossip and talk about, jump head first into a selection of some of the week...
After many years of nomadic life as a surfer, painter and musician, Kyle Field (a.k.a. Little Wings) seemed to have settled down in the Sunset District of San Francisco but recently relocated to Los Angeles. Last, the 10th album by Little Wings, is another intimate collection of campfire indie folk that finds Field grappling with depression and restlessness against the backdrop of nature and the outdoors. Highlights include the hazy “Where Is the Worm” and “Knock on Every Door”, the emotive “Country Skull”, and the soulful “Sandy Baby.” Whether or not this is truly Little Wings' last album as the [...]

So, all things considered January got off to a rip-roaring start where new tunes are concerned. Here is our selection of our best of the month's downloads (27 in all) and a few new tunes too - more than 30 to pick from, so blow those January blues away with these babies. This might be Little Wings' last album. Or at least that's what it seems we're supposed to think about the new double-LP by Kyle Field, the doe-voiced, traveling Californian whose first band included M. Ward, ... read more

"Doom Room" has a new video, and it's a bit weird. I like it. It's off Little Wings ' new LP, LAST . "Doom Room" features heavily bearded Little Wings brainchild Kyle Field, clad in shorts and a straw hat, wandering what appears to be the southwest; maybe rural California not far from his home in San Francisco. Listening to Little Wings can be a confounding experience. Lyrically, the songs weave in and out with little twists and turns that shouldn't seem to work but do so with [...]

Little Wings (aka Kyle Field) most recently reappeared on the MM radar with an exceptional cover of I May Smoke Too Much for the recent Kris Kristofferson tribute album The Risin' Cost Of Livin' High and Lovin' Hard (that we posted about here ). So it was nothing less than serendipitous to discover that on February 5th Little Wings will release a new album, LAST . Recorded over the course of a year and split between recording sessions in Sacramento at the Hangar and at his home studio [...]

Little Wings aka Kyle Field is a master of the fragile song. His voice exists in a perpetual breaking point, at once a weighty baritone and a barely there sigh. It's maybe something that grows ... read more

WVZ/WVZ/WVZ/WVZ (feat. Aubrey Trinnaman) by Magic Leaves You know what’s all the rage right now? Band names inspired by nature. You’ll nary see a lineup quite as bucolic as tonight's at the Presidio Yacht Club in Sausalito, wherein a flock of small-winged sparrows will magically fly through a gate and then above leaf-heavy trees, towards that rare occurrence of a moonbow. Or maybe some bands will play some songs. The evening will begin with the mellower mountain folk of Sparrows Gate and Little [...]

ALBUMS OF THE YEAR #14 LITTLE WINGS - BLACK GRASS The almost-retired pseudonym for label owner, artist and musician Kyle Wilson is Little Wings, who released his first album in four years in February on his own label, RAD Records. ‘Come Fall’ is a good summation of the kind of sound ‘Black Grass’ was sold to me for; with a shuffling acoustic rhythm and thick, anguished yet gently elated vocal, polished Devendra Banhart-esque lo-fi recording style and similarly European tinges, I get the impression Kyle Wilson isn’t going to stop churning out these simplistic, rural folk [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Bay Area Highlights from 2011 (Podcast #263) We might be biased, but, from this vantage point, 2011 reconfirmed that the Bay Area continues to have the most vibrant music community nationwide. The SF scene cranked out a ton of amazing albums this year, and our final podcast of 2011 highlights twelve great releases from Bay Area artists over the past twelve months. This isn't a "Best of" list per se, but these acts did create some of our favorite music in 2011. We'll be doing more year-in-review coverage over the next few [...]
