Marriage records promotes this new Little Wings track as "Sunday morning summer music", but Kyle Field's vocals sound as crackly as the Autumn leaves that will be falling in a month or so. As Little Wings, Field is perhaps most known as part of Devendra Banhart's Golden Apples Of The Sun compilation that established the name of freak folk a few years back. The present single comes after a two year period of silence after 2007's awesome Soft Pow'r LP, although Field has also recently designed a few skateboard decks . The [...]

For their first North American release, NorCal/SoCal band Rubies (featuring Simone Rubi and Terri Loewenthal of Call and Response ) have blended a folksy singer-songwriter vibe with synthy dance-pop. While that blend would evoke Jewel and Janis Ian jamming on a Moog for some, Explode from the Center is quite the opposite. Chock full of well-structured, toe-tapping pop songs, Explode from the Center sounds similar to Feist exploring disco. Signature tracks such as "I Feel Electric" and "Diamonds on Fire" are truly infectious and guaranteed to grace [...]

//photo by mariah gardner To go along with my Barn Show post over in the photo blog, I felt that it was fitting that I do something about Little Wings since he was sort of my highlight of the night. The dumb thing is that people have been telling me about him for years but I just don't seem to listen. I think I may just like to find out about things on my own or something.. sorry. Also, you can check out some videos of him playing on the photo [...]

Sometimes you can have a record for a while and like it, but not love it and suddenly, one day it suddenly clicks and you "get it". This happened once upon a time for me with Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and this has just happened again with Little Wings' "Soft Pow'r" - not to compare the two records in any other way. Little Wings is the musical baby of Kyle Field, who was once bassist and singer in the band Rodriguez with M. Ward. Field has released released six albums under the Little Wings moniker. He has [...]
LITTLE WINGS, LEE BAGGETT (Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi) Little Wings (AKA Kyle Field) is an act that has to be experienced live. Over the past five years, Ive managed to watch as he turned living room floors into electrified dance parties, and turned record stores into sad, somber vigils. I once even followed him, like he was the Pied Piper, as he lead a group of kids down to the beach to sit underneath the stars and sing in some sort of hippie peace circle. Even if youre not a fan of his Will Oldham-esque shambling folk [...]

Kyle Field returns for his 7th album with a few friends and a fuller sound. Soft Pow'r is Field's first album with a full band that includes Jona Bechtolt of YACHT and Adam Forkner from White Rainbow, introducing drums, piano and bass into a repertoire that previously consisted of Kyle on a beach with a guitar hashing out lazy late night melodies. The album is decidedly mellow in tone, with a usual air of delicate sadness that permeates all of Field's prior material. Seeing release via RAD, a new subsidiary of Portland's Marriage Records, it's a welcome return [...]

I first became enamoured with Little Wings, visual artist/musician Kyle Field's song-performance moniker, when I watched the film Wise Old Little Boy a few years back. The film documents Kyle Field and Phil Elverum (of the Microphones, Mount Eerie) as they trek around the United States in a process that one might refer to as "touring at random". They tour the parts of the United States that never have anything like the Microphones and Little Wings brought to them. What we see in the film are the random cultured/ artistic communities of states like Iowa [...]
Little Wings - "Gone Again" Shhhhhhhhhhhh....lie down. See the ceiling? Feel the still heat? Hear the quiet? This song's for me, and this paper airplane's for you. Written on the paper is a contract between you and the person who catches it. You can toss it at whoever you choose, and then you're set for life. You can either toss at it your long-term boyfriend, or you can let it go up high in a stadium and see who you get. You can mail it to someone famous, though I wouldn't recommend it. But for now, in the still heat, [...]

A record label and musical style are not all Phil Elvrum and Kyle Field have shared over the years, and the epic beauty of Mount Erie owes one of its most serene moments to a track off of Field's Light Green Leaves .

A double stuffed lo-fi classic from a few years back. As effortless today as it was then. Little Wings - What Wonder 2x7" In true Kyle Field fashion this is an off the cuff recording that captures his spirit of performance perfectly. Reportedly recorded in the front seat of a truck, the first track "Joy" is an unrehearsed piece inspired by the driver of said truck. It flows nicely into "Hanta Yo", both backed with [...]
It's something that affects everyone's life and even tortures those who can't get it. Luckily, there are some artists who spend a lot of time inducing sleep. Some artists would take such a statement as an insult, but bands like American Analog Set and His Name Is Alive provide the perfect landscape for your oh-so uninhibited dreams.
