Record Store Day takes place this Saturday. Or should I say Record Store Gay... The Capel Street centre will see live performances from a divine dollop of Dublin's finest denizens including Patrick Kelleher , Hello Moon , [...]
I've never heard anybody sound as unconvinced talking about a band than Pat Kenny is introducing "Dublin-based six-piece band" Little Xs For Eyes, whose sound, he continues, is "in their own words, harmony heavy folk tinged with synth doo-wop, but you can judge for yourself". Thanks Pat, I will. I [Read more]

Holly Pereira aka Queen Herod waves goodbye to 2012 in style with the release of new EP Queen Herod in Whelan's ... Both Little xs for eyes and Samuel & Tickly Teeth will join the Dublin-based artist and musician on the 13th to celebrate the eponymously entitled EP recorded in various studios over the past 12 months. For those who enjoy their wispy, ghost-folk and doo-wop pop swirled together in the same cocktail [...]

Even the icy cool of November will struggle to freeze the burning hot line-up awaiting our capital city this month. It was a real battle to pick out a top 10 again this month with many moments pondered over whether to extend the post to a top 20 but that would just be cheating. So here we are, my top ten recommended gigs to attend for the brisk Winter month month that is November.List ordered by date rather than preference. 1. Mark Kozelek When?: [...]
![5 Videos You Must See Now [Spirit of Folk Special]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4510013_lg.jpg)
So for anyone going or considering going to the second 'Spirit of Folk' festival next weekend here's five artists on the bill with superb official videos to compliment their music. 1. Ross Breen - When I Met The Devil I'm delighted that Ross has made progress in the music world lately as his 2011 album 'When I Met The Devil' is a really good album. Ross is playing the Spirit of Folk on Sunday. This video is beautifully shot. Filmed by Simon O'Neill [...]

Little xs for eyes are pretty badass. Their new video has them dealing with the very real threat, dear readers, of the office papercut. In the face of such imminent and unforgiving danger, they persevered in the name of art and created this music video presentation with Roricam for 'Somewhere with a Dancefloor', their new free download single which in these economically-challenged times comes back with a remix of 'Summer Never Comes' by the band's bass player as Fearsome Floors. Disclaimer: This video features professional paper fighters who were trained to perform [...]

Little xs for eyes released a new stop-motion video by Johnny Fitzsimmons and single this week for 'In Three Years' one of the highlights from their excellent debut album S.A.D. from last year. The single is available as a free download from Bandcamp . Also packaged as the B-side is this very tasty Sounds Of System Breakdown remix of 'Kind Hearts' which sounds like something Royksopp and Junior Boys might concoct together. A really superb reworking.

Here's a few Irish love songs to listen to on this special Hallmark Day! If we still did actual mixtapes I think this is possibly one I'd make for the good wife! The Crayon Set - No. 1 Fan Julie Feeney - Valentine's Song Fiach - [...]

Here are the twenty albums which I've loved this year from Irish artists. 1. The Making - Expectations This is pure quality pop/rock album released independently by the Co. Monaghan band. I'm not even sure if it's had an official nationwide release as I didn't notice the album on the Choice Longlist for the year. 02 v1 Beautiful Tonight by The Making [...]

Here we are. The end of the sixth year of the Nialler9 poll. Thank you all once again for voting. We had about 100 or so votes that made up the results in songs , new artists, EPs and now, the big one - albums. Our ultimate winner has topped the poll before that doesn't negate the indisputable fact that there's plenty of superb Irish music contained within this list... 25. The Ambience Affair - Burials 24. LaFaro - Easy Meat [...]
This Friday night sees the annual State Midnight Mass at The Mercantile, our traditional musical offering to celebrate the festive season. Having already put together a bill featuring little xs for eyes , Bitches With Wolves , Come On Live Long , Kool Thing and The Pacifics , we're delighted to announce that Toby Kaar will be joining us a headliner. Toby played a stormer at Crawdaddy over the weekend, so we're expecting a night to remember. It all kicks off at 9pm sharp and, although entry [...]

For the next number of nights I'm going to use my daily "Amhrán Gach Lá" post to write mini reviews of albums I wanted to review but have slipped me by. First up is S.A.D. by Little Xs For Eyes S.A.D. is a fine indie pop album by Dublin band 'Little Xs for Eyes". It's one of those albums I can enjoy from afar without really getting into it. The vocals are wonderful throughout but especially on 'Summer Never Comes'. [...]
It wouldn't be Christmas without the State Midnight Mass and, following last year's gig featuring Ham Sandwich, We Cut Corners, James Vincent McMorrow, We Are Losers and Sleep Thieves, we're back at The Mercantile for another night of fine music. So far the bill this year features State favourites little xs for eyes and Come On Live Long , plus top Dublin beat combo The Pacifics but we will be announcing more names in the coming weeks. Entry, as ever is free, but this year we will be raising funds for War Child [...]
Given the swift turnover of new artists in today’s Irish music scene – as elsewhere – taking your time over a debut album could be seen as a risky strategy. little xs for eyes (no caps), however, have had good reason. Founding duo Bennie Reilly and Davey Moor have guided the band through changes of line-up, finally settling on an expansive six piece, and funded their debut album themselves. Such caution would appear to have paid off, if the assured and confident S.A.D. is anything to go by. Easing in with the harmonic ‘Summer [...]
