wind speaks (mount eerie live on halloween at market hotel)

wind speaks (mount eerie live on halloween at market hotel) Halloween is a holiday that always has really high expectations, and typically doesn't live up to them...so when I heard that Mount Eerie was playing my decision was made for me...Mount Eerie never disappoints. This was my first time hearing Malkuth and Liturgy . Malkuth went on shortly after we got to Market Hotel , and played for what seemed like forever...and not forever in a bad way, but more [...]

Mount Eerie Played Market Hotel - Review, Pictures

Mount Eerie Played Market Hotel - Review, Pictures On Halloween we stopped by Bushwick's Market Hotel and took in what's probably the most holiday-appropriate show we've ever seen: Mount Eerie headlined a night of music that served to emphasize the band's progressively darker direction. Not only that, but they also brought along a couple of bands that were far darker, Liturgy and Malkuth, and presented them to a crowd that was unquestionably enthusiastic. We don't know whether it was the Halloween vibe or simply a crowd shift of Mount Eerie's fan base, but one thing was for sure: Phil Elverum [...]

between two mysteries

between two mysteries There are very few things musically that could make my week better than Karl Blau coming to New York, but this week has topped it. Phil Elverum and his Mount Eerie will be making two New York appearances this weekend as well! Mount Eerie released the wonderful Wind's Poem a couple months back, and if you are a listener or reader [...]

Liturgy Live on My Castle of Quiet, 14th October 2009

Liturgy Live on My Castle of Quiet, 14th October 2009 Black metal doesn't always have to be a wallowing in vitriol and hatred, or a focused venting of negative emotions, and Liturgy are a case in point. Remember the first time you heard Enslaved's Frost album? Or to stretch genre definitions only slightly, Don Caballero's What Burns Never Returns , or King Crimson's Discipline ? Think soulful exactitude, with a profusion of spiritual power. Liturgy are energized players—and their [...]

IN WHICH WE HAD THE UNIVERSE IN OUR BALLS

Pretty big week here at the MetalSucks Mansion. We laughed, we cried, we fired someone, we rocked out with our cocks out. Here's a rundown of the highlights: We debuted a new song by The Devin Townsend Project, a new video by Skeletonwitch, a new song by Javelina, and the cover art for Sigh's new album. Horse [...]

LITURGY'S HUNTER HUNT-HENDRIX DISCUSSES BURST BEATS, APOPHASIS AND THE PROCESS OF ECSTATIC ANNIHILATION

Photo by Ben Shapiro With its intertwining, trebly guitar lines, smeary blurs of percussion and peculiar chanted interludes, the debut full-length Renihilation by Brooklyn's Liturgy was one of this year's more intriguing black metal releases. In sound, it split the difference between the buzzing rawness of early Ulver and Krallice's recent experiments (Krallice's Colin Marston produced [...]

MP3: Liturgy- "Ecstatic Rite"

A week ago, this blog was singing the praises of NYC black metal outfit Krallice, and we have Gimme Tinitus to thank for recommending another darkened metal project from the same area.Rarely does music get this furious. The band forms a wall of white noise built with bricks of dissonant guitar chords and feral screams. The drums relies on nothing more than a kick, snare, and a couple cymbals, and

mp3 :: Krallice > Dimensional Bleedthrough

mp3 :: Krallice > Dimensional Bleedthrough Krallice is Mick Barr, Colin Marston, Lev Weinstein, and Nick McMaster. They play a NYC-variant of nonsatanist blackmetal. Their 2nd album, Dimensional Bleedthrough comes out Nov 10 on Profound Lore . The album's 7 tracks clock in at 77 minutes and are filled with all the shredding your inner metalhead demands (but which has been unpopular in many an indierock circle). The vocals are a bit higher in the mix this time which is not a great thing for me given my dislike of cookie monster style vocals. However, Voivod is named [...]

Mount Eerie climbs to new heights on tour

Mount Eerie (aka the Microphones) have announced a tour. The whole list of dates are after the jump, but the big news is that they'll be playing Todd P's Halloween party. The annual event usually brings some pretty awesome bands to Brooklyn. This year it takes place at Market Hotel with not only with Mount Eerie, but also features performances from Liturgy, Malkuth, Tara Jane O'Neil, and No Kids. Mount Eerie tour dates: 09/17 - Anacortes, WA - Anchor Art Space 09/18 - Portland, OR - Backspace 09/19 - Oakland, CA - [...]

Mount Eerie embarks on extensive U.S. tour

Since we really really really liked Mount Eerie 's most recent full-length, Wind's Poem , it comes with great pleasure to report that Phil Elverum's Washington based project will be spending quite a bit of time on the road in the coming weeks. Beginning this week, the band will embark on what is currently a two month, coast-to-coast trek that includes dates with the likes of Karl Blau and Why? among others. Mount Eerie 2009 Tour Dates: 09/18 - Portland, OR @ Backspace [...]

Liturgy - Renihilation

Liturgy - Renihilation Are we at the point of acknowledging the genre "hipster black metal"? It seems the American take on BM has been maligned with the dreaded "hipster" put-down. Krallice, Xasthur, Nachtmystium, and Wolves in the Throne room receive derision from the black metaler-than-thou. Does mass acceptance (relatively speaking) of an underground band negate its validity? Renihilation Beyond the Magic Forest The worst thing any music fan can do is let semantics and internet shit talk get in the way of a great record. Brooklyn's Liturgy receives praise [...]

mp3 :: Liturgy > Mysterium

mp3 :: Liturgy > Mysterium Liturgy grew from the mind of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix. Liturgy is a black metal band, that said these guys definitely eschew the corpsepaint of your average black metal outfit. This is... I know this is not for everyone. If you grew up listening to thrash and speed metal like I did, this is a great place to reconnect with your inner metalhead. After two self-released cassettes and a 123, Liturgy have put out their debut album on underground label 20 Buck Spin . Renihilation [...]

Live Review: Whartscape 2009 Day 2 (2009.07.11)

Live Review: Whartscape 2009 Day 2 (2009.07.11) Walking into the MICA North Ave. parking lot was like stepping into an alternate universe to me. Accustomed to the outstandingly complete normalcy of Carroll County living, everything involved at Saturday's Whartscape was akin to alien scenery in my eyes. If anyone attending knew who I was or what I looked like-and you probably didn't, you crazy ass MICA kids, I apologize for probably having stared just a tad too much. Whispers For Wolves : The third or fourth thing I laid my eyes upon, and I saw plenty, [...]
