photos by PSquared Photography Jake Bugg @ Bowery Ballroom, 1/14/2013 Although his self-titled debut album is not out in the USA yet, that didn't stop the sold out crowd from singing along to his European hits "Taste It," "Country Song," and "Lightning Bolt." I'll be posting a video from the show in the coming days so stay tuned. Jake Bugg is so talented and again when you consider how young he is and how great he already sounds, it will blow your mind. Plaid Dragon is an alt-folk band from Springfield, Missouri with a front line female vocalist. The band plays a blend of folk, mod-folk, ambient and alternative sound. Plaid Dragon is one of those catchy indie band that produces music that easily gets stuck in one’s head. Makes me think of a slightly less hippie version of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , much less hippie in actual fact (listening to the EP as I right so it's like I'm discovering at the same time with you.... life's good.). A special mention to Inge's [...]
A little over a year ago we reported that after not hosting rock shows for well over a decade, Pete Shapiro had struck a long-term deal with the Capitol Theatre to bring music back to the legendary rock palace . Shapiro reportedly spent $2 million to lovingly restore and renovate the historic venue, which since reopening back in September has garnered rave reviews from concert goers. Earlier this week Shapiro upped his venue portfolio, as according to the New York Times the concert impresario went from renter to owner when he finalized a deal to [...]
The CMJ Festival was a few weeks ago, but I think that I am still recovering from running around Manhattan for five days of nonstop music. I may be weak, but I know that the CMJ Festival is still completely overwhelming. Over the course of the festival, there are over 1500 showcases at more than 80 venues across the city. After scouring the band list, I had finally come up with some kind of schedule for myself, but the magnitude of the festival of course meant that I would be missing so much. Over the course of the [...]
DETAILS ABOUT THIS SHOW + STREAMING COMPILATION OF ALL 14 BANDS HERE . It took us a couple of weeks to come up with a title for this Deli official CMJ show. On Wednesday October 17 at The Living Room we'll have a fair amount of orchestral instruments on stage, from You Bred Raptors'? frantic cello to Cuddle Magic' s gentle winds and xylophone , without forgetting the sparse piano lines of Doe Paoro and Starlight Girls ' retro flute. But even though all these instruments are [...]

This morning I woke up with Leona Naess singing in my head, and the next thing that popped into it was the question posed in the title of this blog post. I mean, why not? You'd think that being the ex-stepdaughter of Diana Ross (her father was the late Norwegian mountaineer and billionaire entrepreneur Arne Naess Jr., Ross's second husband) would have gotten her somewhere. Or perhaps being Ryan Reynold's ex-fiancee. Or maybe this: Her sister-in-law is Cougar Town star Christa Miller. Ok, try this: She could pass for the kid sister of [...]

Bloggy Goodness: Pete Shapiro Buys The Cap

Why Doesn't Everyone Know Leona Naess's Name?
This morning I woke up with Leona Naess singing in my head, and the next thing that popped into it was the question posed in the title of this blog post. I mean, why not? Rocket And The Ghost – No One Likes You
There are three things you can count on at ATG: fresh events, fresh tunes, and fresh bands. Today we're bringing you a new band straight off the streets of New York City called Rocket and the Ghost . The five piece group will "whisper in your ear one minute and make you holler from a mountain top the next." Kiyoshi Matsuyama and Lily Nussbaum lead the band and will melt your heart like ice cream over warm apple pie with saccharine-sweet songs and beautiful boy/girl harmonies. I had the chance to see the group perform last Thursday [...]

Listen: Charlie Mars - "Blackberry Light" (Live)
It's always interesting to hear a stripped acoustic version of a song performed in a live setting and that point is really hit home with this unplugged take on "Blackberry Light" from Mississippi troubadour Charlie Mars . Recorded recently during a solo performance at The Living Room in New York, the punchy laid back funk that permeates the original studio version has been replaced with a fitting disheveled and relaxed country folk vibe and a southern accent that's a bit at odds with Mars' spoken introduction on the songs lyrical origin. More DC [...]
Listen: Family of the Year - "St. Croix"
Curmudgeons need not apply when it comes to signing up for the spangly, feel-good pop/rock of L.A.'s Family of the Year . What The Guardian calls "a vivacious and brilliant evolution of the Cali-folk cult" comes streaming through like the noonday sun in "St. Croix", a track that got a lot of people wondering just how much smiley fun can seriously earnest, earnestly serious indie rock critics (not us, of course) be exposed to? When the band hit New York they put their sandals down at the Living Room where they recorded a [...]
Listen: Cory Chisel - "Lovers and Friends" (Live)
Just prior to the release of his 2008 debut EP Cabin Ghosts , Cory Chisel stopped by The Living Room in New York to perform a memorable show with just his trusty acoustic guitar and backing vocalist Adriel Harris. A relative unknown at the time, Chisel made an indelible mark to the packed room with songs such as the powerful "Friends and Lovers". Catch a brand new From the Living Room to the Loft show on Sirius/ XM [...]
Listen: Matthew Perryman Jones - "I Won't Let You Down Again" (Live)
"I Won't Let You Down Again" is one of the best tracks on Matthew Perryman Jones ' latest album Land of the Living -- and it's also a great new live track in our Friday "From The Living Room to the Loft" series. Recorded earlier this month at New York's legendary Lower East Side venue, "I Won't Let You Down Again" will also be included in the full live performance that will air on Sirius/XM on Sunday, August 19 at 7pm (also featured: Charlie Mars). Listen to the original studio version of the [...]
Listen: The Little Willies - Jolene (Live)
For this week's Friday "Live @ The Living Room" track, we dig back to an early show from Norah Jones and The Little Willies for "Jolene", the Dolly Parton classic that has been a live staple but only appeared in studio form on the band's For The Good Times album this year. Norah is joined in the Little Willies by guitarist Jim Compilongo, drummer Dan Rieser and longtime Jones associates Lee Alexander on bass and singer/songwriter/guitarist Richard Julian. For more archived shows available for streaming -- as well [...]
Listen: Joseph Arthur - "Echo Park" (Live @ The Living Room)
This Friday's From the Living Room to the Loft track is a very fine, very raw version of "Echo Park", a song from Joseph Arthur and his 2004 album Our Shadows Will Remain . Arthur completedd a ten-night residency at the famed Lower East Side club, combining his own uncompromising solo performances with his distinctive art, matching his eclectic songs and poetry with some impromptu drawings. Check out the full performance at the Living Room site and listen to From the Living Room to the Loft every [...]
Listen: Anna Ternheim - "China Girl" (Live)
When Swedish songstress Anna Ternheim made an appearance at famed NYC venue The Living Room a few years back she performed solo -- but she did have her trusty iPod loaded up with some beats to serve as her "band" when needed. One song that utilized her pint-sized percussive device was her interesting take on David Bowie's "China Girl". Over a looped beat and her own acoustic guitar picking, Ternheim strips the song down to its core with some finespun minor chord changes and lets the listener take in and savor each lyrical line [...]
Listen: Glen Hansard - "Love Don't Leave Me Waiting" (Live)
This week begins the first of what will be a great series of special audio streams of performances from New York's legendary Lower East Side venue The Living Room . On May 8, Irish troubadour Glen Hansard ( Once , The Swell Season, The Frames) appeared at the club in support of his recently released album Rhythm and Repose . As is usually expected at a Hansard performance, the music was spirited, intimate and impassioned. What wasn't expected was the appearance of Hansard chum [...]
