After 25 Grammy Awards and just about as many albums, Stevie Wonder needs little introduction. Signed to Motown Records at the tender age of 11 after being discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles, the blind-from-infancy multi-instrumentalist's first two albums didn't make much of a splash - his sophomore outing, a tribute to the songs of Ray Charles, is notorious for the poor match it makes between "Uncle Ray's" world-weary lyricism and "Little" Stevie Wonder's sunny, high-pitched innocence - but his subsequent work as a composer, singer-songwriter, and arranger is legendary. Two years ago today I paid tribute to my youngest after a whirlwind week of cake and circuses. Now here it is her birthday again, and watching her hold her own with her little friends in the midst of a Princess and the Frog-themed swim party on Sunday afternoon, it's clear that the pre-kindergarten independence I anticipated at three has come to full-blown fruition at five. The wee one's grown a lot since we last featured her here , on the cusp of her first big girl bed. Her [...]

MPress Records' artist Seth Glier's debut 'The Trouble With People' available in stores! Multi-instrumentalist/pianist Seth Glier , discovered at 19 and signed to MPress Records makes his label debut with 'The Trouble With People' , now available in stores. You'll find this on Livingston's 1988 album Life Is Good. MP3 File yousendit

The elderchild doesn't turn seven until Wednesday, but with grandparents spread far in every direction, and friends available on weekends only, we've been in full celebratory swing since Friday. This year's theme is the circus, and we're giving it a good go, following up a week of trapeze and tumbling camp with a trip to Circus Smirkus with a few friends tomorrow. The long stretch gives me license to ponder the child she has become, and I've tried, turning to memory and the albums that line our bookcases with an eye towards recovering the [...]
This is Livingston Taylor's biggest hit. The song is from Three Way Mirror, his fourth album, released in 1978. I first heard Livingston sing at the Boston Music Awards a long time ago, and I thought him a James imitation, but I know better now. MP3 File

It sure feels good to have the Bus back on the road. Just a short post tonight, as I've plenty to do. This will be the last post of this week, as I will be out of town for a few days. There are some long overdue changes in the wind. Two songs with the same subject, sung by two talented brothers, have been playing in my head all day. My younger daughter turns three tomorrow, and we've spent the weekend celebrating with extended family: a trip to the circus yesterday, brunch and a slightly damp walkaround at 19th century "living museum" Old Sturbridge Village today. It's been exhausting, to be honest -- putting the girls in their spring dresses, driving back and forth the length of Massachusetts, and advocating for the kids sanity among the best intentions of so many family members is a lot of work. But I'm grateful for the distraction. Because if I had a chance to really sit and [...]
