It's going to be a good Spring if you're a fan of the music of John Prine as you'll be able to enjoy the legendary singer-songwriters music in two very different releases via his Oh Boy Records label. First up, on May 25, the live album In Person & On Stage - which was culled from Prine's tours from the last few years and features cameos from Emmylou Harris, Josh Ritter and Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins - will be released. Then, on June 22, Prine will get the tribute treatment with the [...]

Yo Yo a private loft performance space in SOHO hosted a fabulous night of music and performance art, welcoming Omnivore, Liz Isenberg, Vio Mire based in Providence and Dan Fishkin from Pennsylvania / NYC. It was a night to be receptive to the unknown and the folksy delight of Liz Isenberg and the disarmingly beautiful music of Vio Mire. When art and music coexist the music becomes the vehicle for the art. Both Daniel [...]

We've been slacking on our Friday Mix Tapes of late, but fear not loyal HT readers - we think this week's fantastic mix will make up for its recent absences. This week's batch of tasty tunes is dedicated to the seemingly lost art of the duet, with a number of my favorites from the last few years. So without wasting anymore time with this intro, let's just get at it... We kick things off with the only song here that is not a duet, but the one that that inspired this whole mix: [...]

John McCauley, the 23-years-old singer and lead songwriter for Providence, Rhode Island band Deer Tick , has a raspy and kicked-around drawl that probably feeds off packs of Marlboro Reds. McCauley and his young band—who sound as harsh and gritty as a group of 40-year-old convicts—play a loose and almost traditional style of rock and roll that rides along steam engine rhythms, guitar licks, and introspective lyrics. Even NBC anchor Brian Williams gave the band his stamp of approval on his internet show BriTunes a few months back. It was well deserved. The band's second full-length, Born On [...]

Clara strolled in the garden with the children. The sky was green over the grass, the water was golden under the bridges, other elements were blue and rose and orange, a policeman smiled, bicycles passed, a girl stepped onto the lawn to catch a bird, the whole world-Germany, China- all was quiet around Clara. The children looked at the sky: it was not forbidden. Mouth, nose, eyes were open. There was no danger. What Clara feared were the flu, the heat, the insects. Clara feared [...]

A couple of emerging artists we've been lucky enough to interview - A. Weather and Liz Isenberg - have scored themselves opening slots with some major acts. Portland band A. Weather had a nice write-up in Willamette Week music blog Local Cut last week, which talks up their song "Oh My Stars": Regardless, the contrast between the guy/girl vocals on "Oh My Stars" (an expression I've always been
Liz Isenberg's Seeport Seaport Seeport deserves more than the usual huzzahs you read here. It's a fantastic album, especially for anyone who wished folks like Elliott Smith and Cat Power stuck to the sound of their early records, to transporting room noise and close-in confessionals. I use names like that not just because they and Liz share an aesthetic sensibility; Liz's voice, songwriting and
Several things became clear as I re-listened to and ranked my favorite albums of the year. 1) Despite paying pretty close attention to all the right filters, I've only heard a fraction of the albums I might have a reasonable chance of loving, let alone all that have been released. A look at PopMatters' year-end folk and singer-songwriter lists was sobering. I have a garish yellow bag from a
