Everyone has been mean to Lana Del Rey following her SNL performance with her rabid fanbase of bloggers turning against her in an instant. I'll say that I don't think all of the hate is deserved or justified, but her performance wasn't a star-making turn either. SNL came to LDR's defense this past Saturday night with Kristen Wiig getting LDR'd to apologize for what was deemed an awful performance. Read more »

firstly, i was really surprised to see that cmj was still around, but it doesnt appear they actually are in the magazine business - the old business model. i subscribed for years from maybe like 93ish to maybe 2000? anyway, happy to see they're still around even though they've been really out of my brain since the end of my subscription. i knew they still did the cmj conference thing, but thought that may be in name only. either way.. its interesting to see who they, or the labels in this case capitol was pushing back in 03. most surprising [...]

When Liz Phair was propositioned by Rolling Stone to share a soundbite on Lana Del Rey for an upcoming profile on the divisive singer , Phair declined — and instead wrote a whole op-ed piece about Del Rey for The Wall Street Journal . And yet, several hundred words later, we still aren't sure about Liz's feelings towards the songstress, as her write-up was peppered with backwards compliments. She calls Lana "not overwhelmingly talented", admits she bought Born To Die only because of its value as a "phenomenon", and yet says [...]

Liz Phair argues that the LDR trash-talking is misogynistic.

"Rolling Stone asked me to speak about Lana Del Rey . I wanted to know how big my participation in the piece would be-was it substantial or just a quote? Just a quote, they said, to which I replied that I wasn't super interested. Which was a lie. I have a lot to say about her, but no sound bites. You see, Lana Del Rey is exactly what I was hoping to inspire when I took on the male rock establishment almost twenty years ago with my debut record, "Exile In Guyville.""... [ Liz Phair [...]
I've not written about Lana Del Ray much, mainly because I've struggled with the idea that there's anything much that needs to be said - the whole thing just feels a little too frictionless; all backstory and no plot. Noticeable without being noteworthy. And, apart from a moment when I had to scrape my eyebrows off the ceiling at Prospect magazine, of all places, both throwing in the "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" quote and getting it wrong (it's not a self-description), much of what has been written about her has suffered from the same difficulty finding any point on which to [...]

I have a lot to say about her, but no sound bites. Sancho from Martin Starr This is a mildly amusing song about a guy who suspects that his wife (played in the video by Liz Phair) is getting some service from a non-authorized dealer. The punchline is silly, but Liz looks great throughout. Will Forte steals the show, of course.

Liz Phair: Turning Japanese [ purchase ] No Use For A Name: Turning Japanese [ purchase ] Asia represent! This well-covered and oft-parodied song is undeniably catchy, as noted by its long life in popular culture. The above image comes from the song's most recent incidence, a stylized art video featuring actress Kirsten Dunst first presented at a Tate Modern exhibit in London two years ago, seemingly in [...]

The Event Horizon, Volume One, Part Six Original Source Unknown ( via ) I hate him all the time But I still get up When he knocks me down And he orders me around 'Cause it loosens me up And I can't get enough And I'd pay to spend the nights with him Some more! oh, the way it calms me down. Ever since I began writing for The Ripple Effect I've come across a wide variety of music artists, some good and some shockingly good. However, the one negative aspect is receiving requests from friends of friends and boyfriend's sisters' cousins' uncles twice removed making requests for me to listen to their demos and CDs. Well, maybe it hasn't been that ridiculous, but it's not too far off. I mean a lot of people have come out of the woodwork asking for my help. Although I respect and encourage them asking me politely, I feel weird trying to remain [...]

Dave Matthews Band Caravan @ Lakeside Chicago - July 8-10 The Dave Matthews Band's roving music festival Caravan made its second stop at Chicago's Lakeside on July 8 - 10. The festival featured 38 bands spread over three days and three stages, and the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) closed out each night with three-hour performances. For DMB fans I am sure the experience was heavenly; as for the rest of us Caravan was exhausting, yet it had its perks. I was drawn to Caravan for primarily two reasons: The Flaming Lips were performing The [...]
They promised us a view. Specifically, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan 's own website promised us that from Lakeside, "the panoramic vista of downtown Chicago across the water will provide a stunning backdrop for the festivities." Instead, we got a panoramic view of security fencing and a grubby, toe-stubbing festival ground littered with broken bricks, shards of metal and glass, and a covering of wood chips that were apparently meant to improve conditions but instead lent the entire place a hamster-cage like feeling. It seems that this site of a former steel plant needs some further TLC before it [...]

I am always late for everything and i take my time looking into the vast ocean of music. To effectively filter through endless posts of the blogosphere it makes sense to soak in it before you speak. Another day, another million artists being called the next big hype and EMA's first record, Past Life Martyred Saints , was one of the most blogged about names in 2011 thus far to slide into such a category. Erika M Anderson has learned well. [...]
Make some new memories with Loquat this Wednesday, June 8th at Rickshaw Stop.

Every year Cinco de Mayo rolls around and every year I seem to have to Google the date and figure out why we are drinking. As drinking holidays go, and frankly they're all drinking holidays aren't they?, Cinco de Mayo is probably number three behind St Patrick's Day and New Year's Eve. I mean everybody who drinks consumes a little something something on Marathon Day (a beautiful hack holiday in Boston known as Patriot's Day), Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Let's be honest. But Cinco de Mayo is a fun holiday. A time [...]

Frank Yang I will be the first to admit I don't do nearly as good a job of keeping track of worthy up and coming local and/or Canadian bands as I'd like, generally taking an "if they're worth hearing I'll hear them eventually" approach and deferring to great local and national sites with a homegrown focus like I Heart Music , The Take , Singing Lamb and Herohill to do the legwork and put worthy new Canuck talent on my radar. Showcasing said talent is the mandate of the Unsigned [...]
