WORK IS THE PLACE WHERE THE DREAMS GO TO DIE. IT IS THE SPIRIT'S #CHARNELHOUSE, SLITTING CLEAN OFF THE EARS OF #HOPE, AND GRINDING THEM INTO A CHUNKY CARTILAGENOUS PASTE FOR #SLIMJIMS AND #INDUSTRIALLUBRICANTS. THE TOILLETTE PAPER IN ITS PALTRY #EXCRETIONCHAMBERS IS #SINGLEPLY. AND WHEN YOU TRUDGE THROUGH ITS HALLS, THE #STIFLED CRIES OF #SUFFERING CONDENSE [...]
This is a somewhat delayed post, and, I hope this is not going to ruin you quiet Monday bank holiday. :) So what's the story with Diet Pills, then? Well, it went like this: I was at the Kylesa + Circle Takes The Square show at Josephs Well a coupla weeks back. And I saw this kid at the bar with an orange Diet Pills patch. I've seen that patch before and I swear to god I've heard some friends mention this band a coupla times. The patch unnerved me, particularly because I felt like I should know this band [...]

There are the essential albums that need to be in everyone's collection. There are the personal favorites, the ones that aren't highly acclaimed but still get played every once in a while. And then there are the albums that you stick in the back of your collection because you want to forget that you spent money on them. "Own It or Disown It" gives the writer the opportunity to look at such discarded albums and determine if they are diamonds in the rough or if they deserve to be used as mini-frisbees. [...]

Happy 2012! As we all embark on this exciting (and perhaps historic) new year, we would like to take a moment to share our intentions for the Do LaB community and Lightning in a Bottle festival. Whether prophesied, or simply the true state of affairs, our community, our nation, and our planet face great change at this particular moment in time. We invite you all to embrace this change and continue celebrating life and our incredible human spirit during these tumultuous times. Though our problems seem many, and solutions difficult, we must remember to approach them with grace, love and [...]

You might remember we had versions of this track by Locust (Londoner, Mark Van Hoen) here and here from the 1998 remixes of this track. This version of the track dates from 1996 and was the original release on Apollo Records. This is dnb as ambient. Locust - No-one in the World (Third Summer After Mix) Buy
Retox's Justin Pearson walks it like he talks it. In addition to being a founder member of The Locust, he's been in more bands than most bands have recorded albums. He runs a record label. He's written a book. He could keep Santa Claus and his entire retinue of elves busy all year round if [...]
What do you do when you're a bona fide powerhouse in the world of grind, power violence and noisecore? When you've already assured your place in the genres' histories thanks to your role in - among others - The Locust, Some Girls, and All Leather? Well, the answer is that you go and keep forming new bands to blow people's [...]

We asked Southern California's Retox to keep a tour diary as they make their way through Europe. Written entries by Guitarist Mike Crain; Photos by singer Justin Pearson. " RETOX is an outcome of stagnant and boring western culture, as well as the self-proclaimed counterculture, which has slipped into a sea of pointlessness. The band manages to detach themselves from what one might consider a promotional paragraph trying to explain what is not really important to the band themselves; such as a list of influences—they are influenced by much more than music, but more so [...]

COMING SOON: We asked Southern California's Retox to keep a tour diary as they make their way through Europe. They started by giving us this preface—more to come! "RETOX is an outcome of stagnant and boring western culture, as well as the self-proclaimed counterculture, which has slipped into a sea of pointlessness. The band manages to detach themselves from what one might consider a promotional paragraph trying to explain what is not really important to the band themselves; such as a list of influences—they are influenced by much more than music, but more so by [...]
Hugh Platt can find something wrong with everything, because he's a moody little git. Just what is it about Machine Head's videos that's gotten him so irked? The short answer: Yes. Yes, they have. The long answer: Last week Machine Head released the video for their latest single, 'Locust', and it became their most recent entry [...]

Last week we had the vocal version of this proressive house remix track by Locust. But I realised after posting it that I didn't really like the 80s style big vocal by Wendy Roberts. So, to make up for it, here's the instrumental version. Locust - No-one in the World (Slacker Instrumental) Buy

Here's a bit of Dutch IDM techno from Locust given a progressive house remix by Slacker. Curiously, Locust is someone who doesn't seem to have apeared here before, when I was doing the alphabet. Which is odd. I knew Locust was Mark Van Hoen and that he recorded recorded awkward music that sat somewhere between ambient and techno and that his work was released on R&S/Apollo. I assumed he was Dutch. Seemed reasonable. Not so. According to discogs " LOCUST is MARK VAN HOEN, a born and bred Londoner who has been working in television and radio since leaving [...]

If you are lucky enough to catch a new documentary out commissioned by National Geographic called 'Creatures of the Flood' then you may (or may not) recognise that Kristin Rule has composed the music that accompanies the film. Kristin's latest release 'The Knife that Cuts a Tear' was met with significant praise both on this very site and on the highly respected The Silent Ballet garnering an astounding 8.5 out of 10. Needless to say her music fits extremely well with the thoughtful documentary and is being shown in Europe and other places around the world. Be [...]
I'm officially making the switch from the Top Hard Music chart to the Current Hard Music chart for the purposes of this column. While it's interesting to see what classic Metallica and Aerosmith albums are charting and I still may occasionally reference the former, the latter chart paints a much clearer picture of the modern [...]
Explosive. Brutal. Complex. Machine Head is redefining the epic metal album for a new generation.

Ahhh!! October, one of my favorite months in the year. Why you ask? Well first off, I live in Texas. When October hits, it means the weather if finally getting colder and I can finally wear hoodies again. I love hoodies. The second awesome thing about October is Halloween. Who the fuck doesn't like Halloween? Also, it's October so that means it's time to crack open another Cicatriz' Six Pack. We start this month off with Ordstro and their Summer 2011 Tape . As expected this is one solid, almost 11 minute track. It runs [...]
With Machine Head, I have to try my best to be fair. 2007's The Blackening was an awesome record, but I've always had trouble getting really into them otherwise. But this new album has been getting some shining reviews lately and a lot of big time Machine Head fans seem to like it, so perhaps ...
Not that art is a competition or anything, but just you so know where I stand as a Machine Head fan and how your own tastes may or may not match up with my own, here are my three favorite pre-Unto the Locust MH releases, in descending order of preference: The Blackening Burn My Eyes [...]
Machine Head Unto the Locust Roadrunner Records 26 September 2011 by Amit Sharma & Hugh Platt Rather than give Machine Head's latest album, Unto the Locust, our usual review treatment, we instead decided to have see how the album faired up against the expectations of two long-term Machine Head fans here at Thrash Hits. On the [...]
