In Memorium: Remembering Dance Music Artists We Lost in 2011

In Memorium: Remembering Dance Music Artists We Lost in 2011 As the year winds down to a close and we look ahead to the promise of 2012, it's only fitting that we pause for a moment to remember several dance music artists who we lost in 2011. Some of these artists are well known, others aren't. No matter what their level of profile was at the time of their passing, all of these artists left a legacy of music for future generations to enjoy. Loleatta Holloway One of the most sampled voices in music history died on March 21 after slipping into a [...]

In Memoriam: Loleatta Holloway

In Memoriam: Loleatta Holloway Loleatta Holloway : Cry To Me [ purchase ] Among the soul deaths this year were those of Marv Tarplin (you know his guitar from "Tracks Of My Tears" and virtually every Smokey Robinson hit), Sylvia Robinson (founder of Sugar Hill Records and a soul singer in her own right), Coasters founder Carl Gardner, Dobie Gray, Vesta Williams, Gene McDaniels, Marvin Sease, Howard Tate, Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes, percussionist Ralph MacDonald, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Melvin Sparks, J Blackfoot of The Soul Children, St Clair [...]

Covered with Soul Vol. 9

Covered with Soul Vol. 9 I've said it before: no other series on this blog is as much fun to put together than the Covered With Soul compilations. And I've yet a few mixes in store. There are have been a couple of pretty radical reworkings of songs; Maxine Weldon 's interpretation of George Gershwin's I'll Build A Stairway To Paradise (best known, perhaps, as Georges Guetary's showstopper in the An American In Paris musical) is one of them. On the other hand, if the version of Spirit In The Sky by The Stovall Sisters has [...]

Saved! Vol. 2 – The Soul edition

Saved! Vol. 2 – The Soul edition The second SAVED! compilation gets righteous on your asses with a churchful of glorious '70s soul – and it does so without going for the easy option of all those Stevie Wonder songs about God being a zillion lightyears away with whom you should have a talk (and did George Michael realise that he was singing a song of praise to God when he had a hit with Mary J Blige?). While neither Stevie, Aretha nor Marvin feature here, Al Green does, though with a song that precedes his lesser Reverend Green phase. And, of course, Curtis Mayfield [...]

HartJam

HartJam I've been getting stuck around these cheeky little jams from Melbourne cats Andy Hart & Griffin James. They work a treat in a set but due to the great choice of original tracks to sample they are equally as enjoyable in the kitchen. I remember seeing Roy Ayers earlier this year, I can't believe how well the dude rocked a stage at such a tender age. I'll remember that show for the rest of my life, shame on anyone that hasn't seen him and his band. Be sure to follow these guys on SoundCloud as the [...]

In Memoriam – March 2011

In Memoriam – March 2011 The Grim Reaper must be in need of a holiday after his brutally busy month. In fact, we're still finding his victims from last month. For example, the 20 February death of doo wop singer Willie Davis was announced only last week. Among this month's dead are Carl Bunch, a drummer who toured with Buddy Holly & the Crickets in early 1959. He was in hospital due to frostbite sustained on the unheated tourbus which Buddy, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper tried to rescape by taking the flight that killed them. [...]

R.I.P. "Loleatta Holloway"

R.I.P. "Loleatta Holloway" Sorry but this is past due. Miss Loleatta Holloway passed away last week and today I took a second and was reminded of her incredible voice. Her voice was used more than most would even be aware of. From Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch's "Good Vibrations" to ALL the Black Box hits below and countless other tracks. Y'all betta recognize! She was a Disco Diva Queen who worked it every Thursday, Friday, & Saturday in every club across the world! RIDE ON TIME [...]

Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation (Extended Mix)
Probably the most sampled woman of our time for her powerful belting voice Loleatta Holloway sadly passed away on March 21, 2011 after slipping into a coma. She was 64 years old. The disco world is sadden to miss one of the greats and she will be sorely missed. Please follow this Whosampled link to how many artists have sampled herVideos after the jump

R.I.P. Loleatta Holloway (1946-2011)

R.I.P. Loleatta Holloway (1946-2011) As some of you will know, it has been over a year since my last blog post here. I've had various ideas come to mind, but nothing seemed quite compelling enough. However, today that's changed. Last night, the news came down from her manager that Loleatta Holloway , one of the greatest vocalists to emerge from disco had passed away yesterday (March 21) at the age of 64.. An incredibly sad moment, speaking not only personally but for the disco and dance community at large. In [...]

Loleatta Holloway's life well lived

Fire Island - Shout To The Top - Loleatta Holloway
Though Loleatta Holloway sang many famous songs, I think this 1998 cover of a classic Style Council song is my favorite. That is pure joy. And when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop And when you're down on the bottom, there's nothing else But to shout to the top, we're gonna shout to the top!

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY :: R.I.P

LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY :: R.I.P Loleatta Holloway has died aged 64 following a short period of ill health. Her manager Ron Richardson broke the news last night. Holloway was perhaps best known for her 1980 disco hit Love Sensation, which was later sampled by Black Box for their 1989 club smash Ride On Time. Her vocals were originally used without credit, but she successfully sued the band and received an undisclosed share of the royalties. This is just one of many occasions on which Holloway's vocals have been sampled, while she also a sang on Dan Hartman's original version of Relight [...]

Loleatta Holloway, Soul and Disco Star, Dies Aged 64

Love Sensation by Loleatta Holloway (1980) Provided by L. Sanders, Thanks B2 God!

The singer passed away on Monday evening, March 21, after a brief illness, her manager Ron Richardson announced (via Spinning Soul ). Loleatta Holloway:

Only You - Loleatta Holloway & Bunny Sigler [6:14 LP version, 1978]
Disco singer Loleatta Holloway passed away yesterday evening (March 21) according to reports . The singer had apparently suffered from a brief illness, and her manager Ron Richardson confirmed her passing. Holloway is best known for her hits "Hit and Run" and "Love Sensation," with the latter particularly notable for having its central vocal motif sampled by Black Box on their huge "Ride on Time" track. The B-side to her "Worn-Out Broken Heart" single, titled "Dreamin'," became a disco hit in the late 1970s, and she ultimately enjoyed four No. 1 singles on [...]

RIP Loleatta Holloway

RIP Loleatta Holloway Staff Writer Dulani Wallace laments the breaking news of disco and house music sensation Loleatta Holloway's death. Earlier this morning, I was saddened to hear that one of the pillars of house music has died: Loleatta Holloway, the Chicago-born singer who contributed to the likes of Mark Wahlberg (aka Marky Mark), Marques Wyatt, and Stanton Warriors , and who began singing gospel with Albertina Walker before transitioning to the disco movement. Her manager Ron Richardson reported that [...]

Loleatta Holloway RIP

Loleatta Holloway RIP Loleatta Holloway was an important voice for the disco generation and also to the house music movement that followed. If you ever listened to disco you know the classic ' Love Sensation ' by Loleatta Holloway (written by Dan Hartman), that was sampled to 2 80s' / 902s famous tracks such as ' Ride On Time ' by Black Box and ' Good Vibrations ' by Marky Mark. Here's one original I've always loved from Loleatta. Let's get stronger. MP3 Loleatta Holloway - We're Getting Stronger (320K) (ge.tt)
