The Drunken Frenchman once told me that "if you're good with your barkeep, you're good." Earl was our barkeep and, with him, we couldn't have been better. And The Iguana, a local bar with a quasi-cantina vibe where he plied his trade, was a reliable place to find grist for my imagination From one night's worth of notes… Dave sits nearby, a sodden sort who perpetually attempts to engage me in conversation. He's not good with his barkeep, nursing his drink as though he intends to still be drinking it when [...]
Lately, I've been dwelling on something -- in this blog, in the gym, on the street and pretty much anywhere I never venture without my iPod: great singers who either fell short of finding a sizable audience or ones whose heydays were far too brief. In my quest to give a few of them a little bit of their due, I posted a video by Shara Nelson -- whose stunning voice made Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" one of the most powerful musical statements of the '90s -- on my Facebook wall. [...]

. In my post yesterday, I inadvertently linked to another mp3 rather than "Steve Earle", the stalker fantasy rave-up by 21 year old upstart Lydia Loveless, who makes her Philadelphia debut Friday night at Fishtown's M Room. So today we bring you "Steve Earle" plus a track from her 2010 Peloton Records debut, The Only Man . You can order Indestructible Machine here and The Only Man here . Both are highly recommended. Get thee to the M Room Friday night. Lydia [...]

Lone Justice was an American country punk/pop/rock band formed in 1982 by guitarist Ryan Hedgecock and singer Maria McKee. "Shelter" is the second album by Lone Justice, released in 1986. Steve Van Zandt was the producer. This record saw them almost completely abandoning much of their earlier cowpunk, rockabilly, and roots rock influences in favor of what could be considered more typical 1980s pop/rock production, with heavy emphasis on drum machines and synthesizers. Do you remember Maria McKee? She was the girl with the rasping Tammy Wynette gone rockabilly voice who had a solo number 1 with a tune from some god awful Tom Cruise movie . But Maria's musical path had started much earlier than that as the lead singer of the band Lone Justice. I first came across Lone Justice at (still) the best concert I have ever been to in my life: U2 at Wembley Stadium in 1987. But more of U2 [...]

Scrolling through the filmography of Dennis Hopper, I realized that I've only seen about half a dozen of his films and that several that would be considered essential aren't on that list. I've seen Straight To Hell , but I haven't seen Giant . I've seen Waterworld , but I haven't seen Blue Velvet . I've seen portions of Easy Rider and, honestly, I can't say that it moved me. (maybe, like Woodstock, it helped to have been there ) [...]

"My girlhood among the outlaws was salty, bittersweet, The things I did, I could just kick myself now." Maria McKee, 1993 If you're like me, you've often said to yourself, "Wouldn't it be nice if someone put together a 40-45 minute documentary on early Lone Justice? You know, before the band was engulfed by mediocrity and their souls cannibalized by music industry tiger sharks???" Of course you did. Well, you're in luck because I did just that. Granted, it's an audio documentary, but the upside is you can download it to your [...]
Joseph Smith was either a prophet of God or a charlatan. Joseph Smith was either a prophet of God or a charlatan. He was considered both a man chosen by Jehovah as a modern-day oracle who would lead humanity back to the One True Church and bring about Gods Kingdom on earth, and a philandering con man who abused the trust of his gullible followers by taking a second-rate novel and using it as the basis for his cult of personality. He was a charismatic leader who upon receiving his first Revelation in 1832, managed to spread a new brand of Christianity around the world in just a few short years. [...]
What elements go into making a good mixtape? It's a conversation I've had with many...and something I thought about driving home from Milwaukee this afternoon. In my opinion, a good mixtape is something that creates new avenues to travel. It immediately shines a new light to someplace previously unexplored. Know what I mean? About a decade ago, my friend Paul made me a mixtape that literally took me a few years to fully digest. The mix had a few songs on it that were instantly more accessible than others. I explored those band's discographies first and when there [...]

In the 1980s, Los Angeles was the birthplace of a curious genre called cowpunk, a mashup of punk rock with roots music. Among the more famous practitioners were the Beat Farmers, the Blasters, Los Lobos, Green on Red and of course, Lone Justice. Lone Justice came together in 1982 under the guidance of guitarist Ryan Hedgecock and singer Maria McKee, an L.A. singer whose half brother was Bryan McLean from the psychedelic band Love. In their early days, Lone Justice was a hot band in the L.A. area - thanks in part to having famous champions and fans [...]

Call me an old cornball, but some songs just kind of give me the happy chills. Even if you don't like this song, you have to appreciate the effort . I'm a little wistful though, when I think about the ladies who left the country music behind. Maria McKee in the 80s, and k.d. lang in the 90s. Why, oh why? ohhhhhhh Lone Justice - Soap, Soup And Salvation from Lone Justice ( insound / amazon CD / amazon mp3 [...]
Lone Justice - Shelter label: Geffen jaar: 1986 kant a: Shelter kant b: Can't Look Back www.livingcolourmusic.com | www.myspace.com/marvinetzioni | www.myspace.com/ryanhedgecock Gezien op Pinkpop in wat was het? 1986? 1987? 1988? Geen grote indruk gemaakt, en ik weet ook niet waarom ik deze single destijds gekocht heb. Beetje middelmatig plaatje, eigenlijk. Maar wel leuk dat Silvio Dante erop meespeelt (en [...]

All I ask is a decent playlist and a theme to steer it by, though it would be wise to bring along some supplemental navigation materials, just in case: The Fall - Hit the North (from a 1987 single; collected on The Frenz Experiment , 1988) - While I do not approve of violence, I have to admit that the North has been asking for it lately. The Stone Roses - Driving South (from Second Coming , 1994) - [...]

About this series: When it comes to music, the 1980s don't get much respect. The 1950s saw the birth of rock and roll. The 1960s saw Dylan, the British invasion, and the Summer of Love. The now-fashionable 1970s saw glam rock, Zeppelin, and the punk revolution. Even the 1990s, the decade when most music bloggers came of age, saw grunge and the explosion of hip hop into the mainstream. So what do the 1980s have to offer? Quite a lot, actually. For starters, the 1980's gave us a bunch of fun pop acts [...]
