All in all a pretty good month, actually a very good month, for new music - here are some of our favourite tracks from February. Put them on a mix and impress your friends... Dan Sartain - Ruby Carol mp3 One man revival of perfect, greasy rockabilly. U.S. Girls - Red Ford Radio mp3 Sparse, repetitive, claustrophobic. Brother Dege - The Battle Of New Orleans mp3 [...]

Label: Warp Records Release Date: 22/02/10 Website: Official website MP3: Immaterial Usually, genre-spanning debut albums get cast aside onto the 'musically confused' bonfire, their creators deemed to be branded with 'potential' and little else. In LoneLady 's case, this would be a tragic mistake. Hearing the opener of Nerve Up , Lonelady's first full-length release, I was expecting an album of futuristic electro-pop; however, when 'Intuition' kicked in, I realised Nerve Up was going [...]

Last week was a bit of a struggle, wasn't it? We mean musically of course and not just because the grey skies and general malaise are making everyone look like death warmed up (only not that warm). Unbelievably, the Lightspeed Champion album managed to miss the Top 75 altogether, which is a real shame as it's a definite grower and worthy of some ear time. The Glee soundtrack crashed in at number 1, which should be something to celebrate and yet we're kind of depressed about it. Jedward proved us all wrong by climbing one spot [...]

Having been knocking around the Manchester scene with her guitar and drum machine in tow for the last five years or so, Julie Campbell aka Lonelady has finally hit paydirt with a debut album release on the esteemed Warp Records. A few years ago a signing like Lonelady would have raised eyebrows to the notoriously electronica-focused label. With the success of Battles and Maximo Park for starters, the label has been expanding its template considerably so these days the post-punk chops of Lonelady don't seem out of place. Nerve Up is [...]

Manchester has a habit of spewing forth some cracking indie bands and artists, often with a bucketload of attitude in tow. LoneLady is the latest addition, and we reckon she could be heading for the top of the pile. Her debut album Nerve Up is out on the 22nd February on Warp Records , and is already picking up rave reviews across the board. Scratchy, tense guitars recall Devo as much as they do Joy Division [...]

A few weeks ago I offered up some words in testament to Warp records , the ambitious, tasteful, and increasingly eclectic label that's also earned itself a "venerable" descriptor having just celebrated 20 years of nurturing the processes of everyone from Boards Of Canada to Battles. Their latest signing, LoneLady -- who is in fact a lone lady named Julie Campbell from Manchester -- offers another reminder of how far Warp's come from its nascent, radical electronic days. We have one track to go on so far, called "Immaterial" -- the A-side to an introductory 7" out this week [...]

I'm stepping out from my usual alternative rock rut to share a mix I'm making as a Christmas gift. These songs lean into R&B, soul, and pop--which I am not usually very fond of--with a touch of electronica thrown in. As always, I have my own little alternative twist on the theme and a definite California flavor. This is meant to be kind of a party mix. I mean the kind of party where people stand around in small groups, sipping smoky merlot and nibbling brie on crostini, while discussing movies and politics. This [...]
