Following on from last week's sold-out (and truly spectacular shows) at London's intimate St Pancras Church, Loney Dear has been named as suppport for The Leisure Society's largest headline show to date. The two acts will appear at the London Barbican theatre on December 8. The Leisure Society will collaborate with the maverick, 30-strong Heritage Orchestra to perform songs from both their albums Into The Murky Water and The Sleeper .

Following his recent string of successful UK shows, Loney Dear has announced he'll be supporting The Leisure Society at the Barbican Hall on December 8th. The Swedish legend will replace Micah P Hinson - who had to pull out due to an arm injury sustained earlier in the year. The show will see The Leisure Society collaborate with the 30-strong Heritage Orchestra to perform songs from both their albums Into The Murky Water and The Sleeper .

It seems as though - at long last - godlike genius Emil Svanängen is finally getting the attention that's been owed to him for the past eight or so years. Having sold out his two night London residency at St Pancras Church, Loney Dear have today announced details of a date at London's Bush Hall on February 10. A true master of his craft, Svanängen consistently crafts the most heartbreaking of songs - with his most recent collection Hall Music being perhaps the standout release of his six album career [...]
Oriel Joans give listeners what they expect from Swedish pop: infectiously light key progressions, trickly acoustics, and gorgeous melodies that evolve from folk-tinged whispers to grandiose hook-filled spectacles. Such is the case with "Chin Up", the Swedish quartet's new single. Stylistically, there's not much separating them from recognizable Swedish pop staples like Loney Dear or
If you fancy sticking two fingers up to the dull winter evenings, a healthy dose of lush Swedish chamber pop might be the ticket. Multi-instrumentalist Emil Svanangen aka Loney, Dear is stopping off in Dublin’s Sugar Club tonight as part of his European tour supporting the album Hall Music , released last month. His sixth album, Hall Music was inspired by Svanangen’s experience of touring with chamber orchestras in 2009, and he’s also revisited his back catalogue to arrange older tracks for performance on a grander scale. Tonight’s show starts at 8pm and [...]
Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm just getting old, but maybe it's everyone else who might have thought 9:30pm was too late to start a show, well on a Wednesday anyway. You'd think someone who has become a critical darling in Sweden, would have had people coming in by the truckload. Upon arrival, at best [...]

Frank Yang While I don't expect anyone loses any sleep over anything I write, I feel compelled to offer a formal mea culpa for my thoughts on Loney Dear's last record Dear John . Said review wasn't a thumbs down by any means nor was it inaccurate, but "yeah it sounds like all his other stuff but that's okay" now feels at best faint praise and at worst, dismissive. And considering how much I've grown to properly appreciate the work and vision of Emil Svanängen, [...]

The week brought us a mixed bag of offerings. We heared Zooey and Ben "Death Cab for Cutie" Gibbard called it splitsville, insisting that no third parties were involved, but we here at the office have imagined perhaps an inner competitive lover's spat between demographic relevance. Speaking of competition, Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover continues to ape the Odd Future vibe with his "Yonkers" references in a silly video for his track "Bonfire," while ...
Emil Svanängen (Loney Dear) produces charming indie-pop with the fluttering hooks you'd expect from the Swedish pop scene. Jens Lekman comparisons are fairly prevalent on Svanängen's orchestra-laden efforts, and his acoustic ballads bring to mind Swedish counterparts like Jonathan Johansson or Palpitation. Both Svanängen and Lekman share similarities in their tranquil delivery and dry wit, but Svanängen has

Wait, was this really over two weeks ago? Well, that was a blur. While I won't deny I got my usual kick out of playing new songs for sociable patrons at my favorite Cambridge bar, the preparation and follow-through were just plain rough . Jetlag + influenza do not a fun equation make. I was freshly back from drumming on the (flat-out amazing) 10-day Let's Whisper UK tour , which ended with a 7-hour drive, a 7-hour flight, a few hours sleep, a crazy workday, a 4-hour drive, and a homecoming show. Followed closely by a [...]

Frank Yang I spent an inordinate amount of time at this year's SXSW chasing around London's Still Corners , my attempts to catch one of their many sets foiled by things like not noting the difference between AM and PM on set times, showcases falling three hours behind despite having only been running for two hours and the like. I eventually caught them at a day show in an Austin Convention Centre meeting room where the room setup didn't even allow them to perform underneath their projected lightshow, instead playing in the dark while [...]

Hall Music is Emil Svanangen’s sixth LP as Loney Dear and finds the Swedish singer-songwriter exploring vast sonic landscapes that make his older strictly acoustic-vocal music seem inconsequential in comparison. Hall Music’s airy folk pop brings in a wide range of instrumentation and sonic experimentation, all filtered through a production that is never in your face about its sound. PopMatters reviews the new Loney Dear record "Hall music" : http://www.popmatters.com/pm/r eview/149967-loney-dear-hall-m usic/
Emil Svanngen has pushed his instrumentation and arrangement without sacrificing his sense of melody, and it's an intriguing step for him. For his sixth album as Loney Dear, Swedish songwriter Emil Svanngen stretches his soundmaking skills. Hall Music occasionally features instrumentation that could clash, but Svanngen successfully blends them into lovely arrangements. The tone's the thing on this album -- it's memorable and impressive enough that Svanngen has to work to keep up as a lyricist and melodist. He doesn't fail in those regards, but once the album stops, the atmosphere remains more than any particular...

There are some albums which require a listener to slow down their life's hectic pace in order to take the time to fully appreciate them. And then there are some records that completely stop you in your tracks. Loney Dear 's Hall Music is clearly one of those stop you in your tracks releases which contain such gorgeous, unvarnished beauty that it causes the din and demands of daily life to fade away, leaving you with just the fragile voice and enthralling instrumentation of Emil Svanängen soundtracking your inevitable swoon. The Swedish songwriter [...]
For a man whose musical output has always been particularly multilayered, Emil Svanängen, the man behind Loney Dear , has never been one to shove anything down our throats. His project’s forlorn pop songs have been prefixed by ‘chamber’ just as validly as ‘bedroom’, often in the same breath, and it’s the former that’s seems particularly relevant in pinning down this, the second Loney Dear release on Polyvinyl. But whilst Hall Music sees Svanängen refining his production and creating a record that’s perhaps more expansive than those preceding it, it’s by no means any more immediate. [...]

Loney Dear Hall Music Polyvinyl Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Loney Dear expands their sound on sixth release Hall Music . Album Review: Emil Svanängen has been tweaking his sound since we last heard him on 2009's Dear John , as he returned to his home country of Sweden and was playing shows with a chamber orchestra. This clearly impacted his sixth album, Hall [...]
