January has been a pretty hectic month 'round these parts, with so many non-Soft Signal related activities eating away at the time I normally set aside to do things like work through my inbox and sort through the actual mail piling up on my counter. I spent a lot of the weekend playing catch up on these things, and happened upon one gem in particular that I wanted to be sure to share sooner rather than later. They go by the name Long Weekends , three gentlemen based out of Halifax who, after a string of digital releases, are moving [...]

From Halifax comes Long Weekends with the new single "Don't Reach Out." This gritty tune is part mope, part grimy garage bounce, and it might sound like a hummable retro pop tune were it not for the hiccupy vocals, which push it into slightly stranger territory. This is coming out on 73 through the Noyes Records subscription series.

Long Weekends are a Garage/Pop band based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This three piece group first released a four song EP that was recorded at Echo Chamber studios in Halifax entitled Warmer Weather in March of 2011 and before they even played a show they begin to receive publicity and appear on bands to watch lists. The bands sound is simple to describe, it's Garage, Punk, Pop and it's catchy as hell. The band is made up of Noel Macdonald on guitar/vocals, Devin Peck on bass and Adam Hartling on drums. Prior to forming Long Weekends, Devin [...]

by teepoo Here's another from the collection of Halifax tunes. This is Long Weekends, some fuzzy garage rock! I'm not entirely sure what they are saying but the song is called Quarter Sticks . It sort of reminds me of small shows where I am standing in the wrong spot acoustically. Long Weekends- Quarter Sticks Bandcamp

When we last heard from Halifax's Long Weekends , they were giving away a four-song EP that filtered their fun loving, hard driving garage hooks through a swampy filter with fantastic results. Since then, the trio has stormed the stages of Sappyfest and started to deliver on the hooky potential that slid through the ooze of Warmer Weather. Don't Reach Out - the band's contribution to the excellent Noyes 73 subscription series - is a whole new ball game. Attitude and hi-jinx have given way [...]

Halifax's Long Weekends could have hammered along using their propulsive back beat and shimmering guitar notes to get you dancing and called it a day. Done right, no one will ever complain about hearing frantic riffs and cymbal crashes, but the four songs on Warmer Weather are more than just another collection of hashed out garage rockers. Building on the strength of experience (the trio is made up of members of The Got to Get Got , A History Of , Tomcat Combat , Kestrels [...]
If you are looking for a song for the long weekend, a song that goes well with Beergaritas, look no further than Kasabian's hot little ditty, Fire. These English lads Brit-Pop-Electronica-Indie-Roc k Swagger has been around for a few years, but it is their forth coming album that looks to take the UK by storm. Their new video makes you wish watching Much Music was still part of your daily schedule. In a Beastie Boys Sabatoge-like fashion these dudes hold up a bank at guitar point, yes guitar point, and steal bags full of bank [...]
Following the family tree down from such greats as Bob Dylan, Nat King Cole, and Julio Eglesias, musical history is rife with offspring chasing after the same spotlight that their bloodline basked in. After all, how can you blame them? To share the same genes with someone who dominated their genre in their time can [...]

Primal Scream, "Country Girl" - Is it even news anymore when music writers (1) start getting promo CDs sent to them by enterprising bands, and (2) discover that even though ninety-nine and nine-tenths of these CDs may be only slightly less interesting than your average WNBA regular-season game, every so often one of them just works? I mean, isn't that pretty much the way modern music consumption works in general - people judging records on the basis of uninformed approximations of their content before actually spending with 'em? Would anybody have ever bought that Antony and the Johnsons monstrosity [...]
