This review runs live, first and in color at the Bowery Presents' House List blog. The first time I saw John Roderick was with his full band, the Long Winters, at a now-defunct East L.A. venue back in 2008. He was in rock-star mode with long hair and a loud maroon jacket, and he never took off his sunglasses. But on Saturday night, a mellower version, perhaps a more authentic Roderick,

Dear 2012, can we put on our wish list that PULASKI the band of Baltimorians make some more music for us this year? Whiskey and beer can sometimes coax the muse out of the best of bands in Pulaski's case it's the simple motivation like these except for maybe breakfast food. Ok they're prone to write the occasional break-up song like their classic "I want my records back" or the religious anthem the "Black Hand of g*d"? The inspiration is pleasantly misanthropic my friends so help reel in the vibe. They'll brew a song about almost anything using [...]
John Roderick ::: photo by Josh Lovseth In an industry and city obsessed with passive coolness, joy isn't a word on the lips of many music writers or musicians. Which is why John Roderick's performance with the School of Rock during City Arts Fest was so refreshing. As the cliche says, "a picture is worth a [...]
A few days ago I wrote a post about a track called Boeing 737 by The Low Anthem. In the lyrics of that song The Low Anthem intertwines the tragedy of the World Trade Center terrorist attack with hanging out in a bar with Philippe Petit (the man who strung a high wire between the twin towers). In that track there is a certain beauty found in what is ultimately a melancholy and utterly tragic experience. It takes a unique talent to capture the bittersweet emotions of certain events and forge from that fire something beautiful and worthy. [...]

[The New Classics is a reoccurring segment in which we examine our favorite indie releases that are bound to replace our parent's "classic rock" stash hidden in the attic or the basement. These aren't reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness?] Words by Kelsey Album: Putting the Days to Bed Artist: The Long Winters Released: July 25, 2006 [...]

John Roderick of The Long Winters at the Showbox, October 20, part of City Arts Fest 2011 My recap and photos from my limp around City Arts Fest 2011 are up over at Bumpershine right now . Highlight was easily the set from The Long Winters. Having John Roderick backed by high school students (Seattle's School of Rock) might be the best indie rock idea since the 4-track. Other performances captured include Pickwick, Campfire OK, Cobirds Unite and a transcendent set from Sons of Warren Oates.

John Roderick of The Long Winters at City Arts Festival (10/20/11) Words and Photos : Drake Lelane Heineken City Arts Festival 2011 (Seattle, WA) After a fairly disorganized first year, the second annual City Arts Fest is starting to look more like an actual festival instead of a weekend of shows tied together in signage only. Many shows were located at least in the same neighborhood, so there was at least the opportunity this year to jump between some venues. Sadly, I had [...]
Male Bonding play Chop Suey, October 22 w/ Unnatural Helpers, Virgin Islands and Fucking Eagles The 2nd Annual Heineken City Arts Festival kicks off Thursday night, featuring headlining sets from Robyn , Crystal Castles , The Long Winters , The Felice Brothers and Allen Stone . I'm hobbled a bit, recovering from a torn calf muscle, so I'll be picking one venue and sticking with it, as the distance between venues is more than my limp and I are comfortable with. Since Allen Stone appears to [...]
The second annual City Arts Fest gets the weekend started early this Thursday with something for just about everybody: punk rock at the Comet, a soulful sold out show at The Triple Door, some of Seattle's finest songwriters at the Showbox, a dance party at The Paramount and more. We'll be sharing our daily City [...]
rocketshoes : This is one of the first songs I ever heard when I moved to San Francisco. Like, literally, one of the first songs I can remember hearing that I associate with my life here. I remember waking up every day in an apartment with five strangers wondering what the f*%k I was going to do with my life. Scared out of my mind. So. It's always nice to hear this and look back at that me and go, "shhhhhh…no one's gonna hurt you, little guy." This song makes [...]

Jonathan Coulton is a joker. This part is known; his back catalogue looks like a series of ideas that Al Yankovic discarded for being too high brow. However, on his new record, Artificial Heart, produced by They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh, Coulton heads in a direction to coellese these broad, quirky ideas into a beautiful slice of pop. Lead single, "Nemeses", the kind of thing that would
Robyn ::: photo by Josh Lovseth City Arts Magazine has announced the line-up for their second annual City Arts Fest, held this October from the 20th to the 22nd, and once again they've shown an upstart music festival can compete with the big boys in terms of star power. Big name national and international acts include: [...]
Rough Monday? Here's a few adorable demos from the forthcoming Perkins School Choir: All the Sound of Life, an album of the elementary school's choir singing songs from some of our favorite local artists. The kid's choir, who made a splash singing back up for Grand Hallway at the Triple Door last spring, will be [...]
By Taylor K. Long While record browsing with a friend at Greenpoint's Permanent Records last week, I found a copy of the Long Winters album, When I Pretend To Fall in the .99 section and realized that though I love it, I don't own it in any physical form. The kind clerk informed me that .99 CDs were three for $1, so essentially I could pick out two more CDs for free. When deciding which CDs to get, I wondered, Should I pick something random and hope it's good? What are the odds of something in the .99 section being [...]

An Artist Appreciation Someone You Should Know by 5342 Studios Well, we've only just turned the calendar to February and already spring cannot come soon enough. In the spirit of the whole lemons and lemonade thing, it at least gives us inspiration for this post. Recently I rediscovered the outstanding (and appropriately named) outfit, The Long Winters. I have had a blast over the past couple weeks acquiring and soaking up their catalog. [...]
Last Friday I was planning on having a nice night at home, when my roommate, Adam, convinced me that I had to go to this concert with him. Luckily, I rallied and went because it turned out to be amazing. The concept is to bring some of the best music from sister cities of Reykjavik, [...]
You may not know the name Mt. Desolation but the chances are you'll be aware of its members' previous work. The band is the new side project of Keane's songwriter/keyboard player Tim Rice-Oxley and the band's session bassist Jesse Quin, together with a group of friends including members of Mumford and Sons, the Killers, the Long Winters and Noah and the Whale. The duo decided they wanted to take a stab at making a country album, the results of which can be heard on their self titled debut. Opening track 'Departure' is an up-tempo [...]

This cello-backed cover of "Dazed and Confused" comes to us via the From the Land of the Ice and Snow: The Songs of Led Zeppelin compilation out now on Jealous Butcher records. The compliation also features Laura Veirs, The Long Winters, and Chris Walla but this Portland Cello Project collab w also PDX based Laura Gibson really got our attention. Give it a listen below. The Cellos really light up the track and Gibson's vocal compliments them quite well. The Portland Cello Project - Dazed and Confused (Feat. Laura Gibson) [...]
