OF LATE I've been listening to a lot of Britpop, the defining music of my yoof. And by "a lot", I don't mean sticking on What's The Story (Morning Glory). I mean I've been listening to long-forgotten albums by the likes of Gay Dad and Spacehog, trawling charity shops for Gene singles, outbidding people on eBay for the right to hear Longpigs b-sides. Basically I've pushed deeper and harder into the recesses of '90 guitar pop than I've ever been. Alas Spotify doesn't allow for a lot of this, but nevertheless I felt compelled to put [...]

This sink measures 33 by 27 by 7 inches. The kitchen sink. I could do this for another month and still barely scratch the surface of stuff I want to post. I won't though. Instead I'm going to throw a big ole pile of songs at you. All of this is stuff I love, and most of it is stuff I'd never get a chance to blog about normally. Just press play. AC Acoustics - I Messiah, Am Jailer [...]

Its been a while since we've posted in our Tuned to Zen section. We originally intended for that category for that special time of the day (sometime around 4:15ish) so we'll be making this a daily thing in the future. Simply put these guys are really old. I had to hunt down this mp3 but its amazing. Just sit back, relax, and mellow out for a bit. This is tuned to zen. There's some extra info at the bottom if you want to read on. Lee Ryan Ex- Blue star and notorious elephant fan Lee Ryan is having a second shot at solo stardom. After enjoying moderate success in the mid-noughties with the syrupy ' Army of Lovers ' - co-written by Longpigs frontman Crispin Hunt, indie Britpop fans - Ryan is now pursuing a more dance-driven direction. Listen to a clip of his new single 'Secret Love' (out May 3rd 2010) below. Click here to view the embedded video.
I’m having conversations with my Dad lately despite the fact that he passed away three years ago last week. I imagine catching up and filling him in on world events and the like. On my mom and her health and the dog he adored that now lives with me. It’s cruelly ironic that when he was actually around, sometimes weeks would go by before I’d pick up the phone for a hello. He’d say, ‘Where have you BEEN—I was worried!” And I’d say, “Oh, I’m FINE...why would you WORRY?!” “When you’re a parent,” he’d say often, [...]

jarvis cocker broham and former longpigs frontman richard hawley is back like chiroprac with "for your lover, give some time". the track is the lead single off the upcoming "truelove's gutter" LP due out monday in the UK. we dig the sort of leonard cohen/"what are you doing with the rest of your life" meld. Richard Hawley - "For Your Lover, Give Some Time" buy it myspace it rating: 8.4

so as i said the other day, i've been listening to a lot of britpop lately, and after a while i got tired of wading through all the shit (hello, northern uproar) and decided to make my own "best of". except this isn't really a best of as such, since that would basically have lots of songs by 4 or 5 bands and no one else. so instead consider this more of a primer of sorts: not necessarily the best but certainly pretty representative of the scene at the time. as such i've focused only on the years [...]

It's been an extremely long week (so long, in fact, that it became two weeks), and I'm still feeling a little crabby because I came down with a cold last weekend in the midst of a heatwave in a house with no air conditioning. A few days later, I ended up with some extremely vomitous backpain (if this is me at 26, I may as well call it quits at 30). I'm also just feeling bogged down with work, so I'm going to do a cheer up mix. Frankly, I despise people who tell me to cheer up or smile [...]
I still find it weird that I've seen Richard Hawley three times before I even knew who he was. That's because those three times were: 1) As guitarist for Longpigs , who opened for The Dandy Warhols at a 1999 show in Orlando. 2) As the rhythm guitarist for Pulp, at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington DC a year earlier (in case you're an idiot, that would be 1998). 3) Two days after that, also with Pulp, at a sold-out NYC show at the Hammerstein Ballroom. So I've [...]

I've written about the Longpigs before. And there's not really much I can add to that previous post. Nothing's changed. They still released a debut album that I consider one of the best from the Britpop period. They still followed it up with an unbelievably disappointing second album . And they still split in 2000. Not much more for me to say really. But I do have some songs that I've not posted before. Three songs from a live session recorded way back in the mid 90s. Three songs that still [...]
I just got back from a week in sunny New York City: roof parties, Arizona Green Tea with Ginseng and Honey, warehouse gatherings, sunbathers, Bimbos, Barcelona winning the champions league while its still daylight, gurners, moving furniture, Turkish delight, West Village, spacious lofts, frozen mojitos, happy birthday, James Gandolfini, the Housing Works Bookstore, Broadway, [...] Related posts: **The New York Trilogy** My time in New York ended just a little... **I Know What You Did Last Summer** September will forever be [...]

In this edition of my 1000 Minutes I've decided to step back in time abit. Part Nine was almost real time in terms of track age, so this seems appropriate at this stage in time. What are my 1000 Minutes? Find out here. 30. Longpigs - On & On [4:11] [time remaining 890:09] (Drop io) (Alt Link YSI) Considering how much I loved Brit Pop, the fact that 'The Sun Is Often Out' by the Longpigs wasn't in my CD collection [...]

Image From Here You know, one of the worst things about depression is the isolation involved with it. It causes you to withdraw and focus only on yourself. You get inside your head and constantly go through the past. All the mistakes and all the hurts. And, then it is so hard to focus on other things, to do other things, to live life. Thank God right now that I have my Mom. Yeah, I know it is pretty lame for a 48 year old to be living with his Mom, but that is just [...]

As this blog nears ten months old I thought it was about time I submitted it to Hype Machine . So to celebrate our inclusion on the web site I thought I'd post All Hype by Longpigs. A great band and if you've not done so before check out their The Sun Is Often Out album. Yes it's got a very 95-96 feel about it but it's got many quality tracks that are still great to listen to now. This is one of the album tracks... [...]

Eight years ago this weekend, my friend Anne put a gun to her head and killed herself. I wrote a little bit about it here not too long ago. Last winter as I stood waiting to get the bartender's attention at the Friday Night Haunt, I looked to my left and spotted friend of hers and with more than a few in me I said, "Hey, didn't you used to be the drummer in so-and-so band? I think we have a friend in common." "Oh yea" he says as his date begins to gush [...]
Malcolm Middleton - Total Belief Ignoring all of the hype surrounding his bid for chart glory (last I heard in the midweeks, a disappointing number 26, with a bullet EDIT: a respectable 31), it's easy to forget that Malcolm Middleton is one of the most underrated songwriters of the past few years. The new mini-album Sleight of Heart is a much lower-key affair than the massive-sounding A Brighter Beat , which is a damn good thing; although it was interesting to hear him go that way, it didn't really suit him. Sleight is [...]
Rhino's cool "alternative" box set of 2007 is The Brit Box which I wrote about back in August. It's in stores this week. As I said then, it does a pretty admirable job of documenting the cool music coming out...

From one underachieving band to another. From one lost classic album to another. Longpigs story almost mirrors that of Marion. They released a great debut album full of potential hit singles. Gained critical acclaim. Got lumped in with Britpop also rans. Released a pretty dire second album and disappeared never to be heard from again. Kind of. Either way, they too failed to realise the early potential they showed. For a point, it seemed like they might be another Radiohead . 'The Sun Is Often Out' being a [...]
