There's something mythic about Brooklyn based band Falcon. It's not a penchant for face melting solos, mystic robes, or even a rock legend in the band's line-up. Their concept is mythic. Falcon is a new band founded by three classmates of a junior high student named Jared Falcon. Jared Falcon was a songwriting prodigy that wrote nearly a song a day from 1986-1988 on a fischerprice tape recorder until he was institutionalized. The band studies the recordings and then fleshes out the musical arrangements to create some stunningly affecting rock songs. Neil Rosens' boyish vocals add [...]

Great indie rock from these boys (aka Longwave ) from New York, who have a special ability of making very emotionally charged indie rock. Reminds me at times of Death Cab for Cutie. last.fm bio: Since 1999, Longwave has been one of the New York City's leading exports. After the success of Endsongs , their 2000 independent release, the band signed with RCA Records and began work with producer Dave Fridmann, known for his efforts with the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. The resulting album, The Strangest Things, led to [...]

They've been running around the country opening for Swervedriver as of late, but Longwave just sent word they are playing a solo show tomorrow night at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I caught these guys at SXSW this year and wow, they're really great live. Says they: Just wanted to let you know that we are playing this wednesday night at a place called Glasslands in Brooklyn, right down the street from where we rehearse....the place is a gallery/art space, and the info is below... Wed [...]

In DC tonight there is The Cool Kids, Che Grand, and Dirty Water at the Black Cat while the 9:30 club has Swervedriver and Longwave. In Philly tonight The Breeders and The Mountain Boys play the Fillmore, while The Young Knives, Everest, and Greyhounds play Johnny Brenda's. Also in Philly is De Novo Dahl at the north Star Bar with Whales And Cops, Caroline Liars, and The Marts. If you dare to brave Nissan Pavillion in Virginia, then why not check out the legendary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. mp3: The Cool Kids - What It Is [...]

There is plenty to see this weekend. So much, that I don't think I can cover it all. In addition to shows that I have mentioned elsewhere, here are the highlights: There are a few shows hitting two venues over the next few days. The biggest is the return of Swervedriver . On the road road with them is Longwave and Terra Diablo . 6/7: Philly @ TLA 6/8: DC @ 9:30 mp3: Swervedriver - Son Of Jaguar [...]

Okay, fast and dirty this week. New music as always, but not so many new bands. Comments from two weeks ago were correct, I fell for a fake Death Cab file. Song wasn't half bad though, was it? Anyway, new DCFC this week, and more Weezer. I haven't really been a fan of Weezer's stuff, but Troublemaker really rocks. Wallis Bird is new to me, but I dig her stuff already. Not sure what to think of the new Captain single yet- they were one of my favorites from 2006, but this one hasn't caught on with me [...]

For Mother's Day I got this handmade wooden box from my little four year old. It held various treasures, including a coupon, some chocolate covered espresso beans (good choice), and an ant. The ant apparently escaped. It seemed like a good idea to him at the time to include it in the gift. I feel very lucky. I hope you all tried to take care of your mamas as well yesterday. When not busy being a kickass mom this week, I listened to this stuff (actually, sometimes simultaneously): [...]

So there have been rumblings that New York's Longwave have been in the studio recording a new album with producer Peter Katis(Interpol, The National). Today they've put up a free download on their website and myspace of Siren of the Deep Sea , a track off their upcoming untitled album. This song defnitely furthers their sound and has the gorgeous production that comes with Katis. If you like this track you might want to consider stopping by the TLA in Philly on June 7th or the 9:30 club on June 8th to catch a set [...]

Welcome back to the Mix Tape Monday. Again, no rhyme or reason, just whatever the fuck I want to put up. If anyone has any requests on future segments then feel free to leave something in the comments. For this week we will cover a band I happened onto by chance a few years back, and has been out of the scene for a little bit, but sounds like they are making a comeback this year. These guys have an album from 2003 called " The Strangest Things ", and one that came [...]

Good news! Longwave , an old acquaintance, are back in the studio recording after otherwise having been sans label for the last couple of years. And even more good news, they'll let you download a song off of their coming album for free. They seem to have changed style since, as it's quite a different song from what was on Endsongs and The Strangest Things , and so on my first listen I wasn't too sure what to think - I guess I was mostly surprised. But I'm starting to like it, after [...]
