A Chris Barber anthology finally appears in the United States
Here's a preview of a track from Ringo Starr's forthcoming solo album, Ringo 2012. "Wings" is actually a badly needed remake of a song Starr co-wrote some 35 years ago. LISTEN UP!: Ringo Starr, "Wings" (Ringo 2012) "Wings" was originally part of Ringo the 4th, a dance-y flop produced in 1977 by slickster disco maven Arif Mardin. The cool-rocking little [...]
For no real reason, this month's mix happens to be the least eclectic and also contains zero electronica or ambient—the genre that, until now, has felt like the unifying thread of all my monthly mixes. At any rate—as usual, this mix is meant to be listened to in order. Aside from the Andrew Bird track, everything here dates from 1972 or earlier, and most fall on the narrow spectrum between folk and country. So be it! If you like any of these songs, visit my sources to hear more. Blossom Toes: [...]

Researcher Rusty David, of St. Louis, suggests that while the details of the current ballad support the Frankie Baker/Allen Britt story, in fact the ballad predates this murder, and describes a killing that took place in the same red-light district of St. Louis sometime around 1865-70. When the Baker/Britt killing took place, according to David, the earlier ballad was modified to fit the new events. source Lonnie Donegan lived long enough (and stayed famous enough in the UK) to put future generations off uncovering the roots of his enduring success.

It's thanks to the son of a (musical) legend that I have an opportunity to look again at: When you've been walking round the shops you can't help but spot some England/World Cup tat. Everywhere you turn your head there's some more. It's on plates, napkins, mugs.. shoes... and bras ! All of this can be traced back to 1966, when the World Cup memorabilia cash-in started with the above mascot . Which was actually the first one. World [...]

Lonnie Donegan - Ramblin Man . The Drums - Let's Go Surfing . The Frequency - Ego is the Drug 3am .

It's skiffle week on Stagger Lee Saturdays! Skiffle is a genre of British jazz-rock-folk-blues, with a lot of instruments like washboard percussion and washtub basses. The King of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan ( official wiki AMG ) recorded his version for the Pye label in 1956, and labelmate Chas McDevitt ( official wiki AMG ) laid his version down the next year. Donegan's version is a slow, lazy rambling blues take (lyrically similar to Woody Guthrie's ), with a few improvisations along the way. McDevitt's version is a [...]
Scotland. The country that claims Braveheart, kilts, the Loch Ness Monster, and single-malt whisky has been the birthplace and home to many of music's greatest artists. From folk to hard rock, here's a look at ten great Scottish acts. 1. Lonnie Donegan – Lonnie Donegan's influence on a generation of musicians has been huge, particularly in and around Britain, where his blending of blues, country, folk, and jazz ushered in the "skiffle" craze. Thousands of young wannabes got swept up, including a pre-Beatles Paul McCartney. Recommended album: Rides Again . 2. Donovan [...]

I remember the first time I heard the prison work song Ain't No More Cane it was one of those moments when blues music caused me great sadness. I don't normally associate blues music with sadness, but this song takes me there. It might have been Leadbelly's delevery, but I thought about all those men who died working on prison work gangs. Over the years there have been a few more upbeat treatments of the song, and some have really made it rock. Check these out; [...]
Three of my favourites appeared in the NBC show Van Morrison - he has a track called Midnight Special but it isn't posted as a video. Lonnie Donegan was a very early British performer - leader of the skiffle movement. Chris Barber : Trad Jazz really Chris Barber- St Louis Blues Uploaded by boberwig
Eli of the Monolators 1. "With Luv'" by, natch, Luv'. Luv' was a manufactured girl group from the Netherlands circa late 1970's, basically an attempt to cash in on ABBA's success. There's three of them, all girls, and they all have different personas: there's the one who can sing, there's the "exotic" one, and there's the blonde one. Like Charlie's Angels. The thing is, though, the this record is REALLY REALLY GOOD. I highly recommend watching their videos on youtube. For example: http://www.youtube com/watch?v=vHllh7J-g2o or this one, with [...]

Lonnie Donegan: Rock Island Line [ purchase ] Lonnie Donegan was the undisputed King of the British skiffle revival. According to Wikipedia (our favorite source) " Skiffle is a type of folk music with a jazz and blues influence, usually using homemade or improvised instruments such as the washboard, tea chest bass, kazoo, cigar-box fiddle, musical saw, comb and paper, and so forth, as well as more conventional instruments such as acoustic guitar and banjo. Skiffle and jug band music are closely related. Skiffle was particularly popular in [...]
