Back in 1998, UK folkie Billy Bragg teamed up with up and coming alt.country act Wilco, to write and record new songs culled together from a treasure trove of previous unheard and unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics. Called Mermaid Avenue, for the street that Guthrie and his family lived on in Coney Island, the recording sessions yielded enough material to be spread across two albums, that were released two years apart, and feature a number of songs that both Bragg and Wilco still perform in concert. With Guthrie's centennial birthday being celebrated all [...]
With a Webster's Dictionary definition like "of or relating to an intelligentsia that develops new or experimental concepts, especially in the arts", it's no wonder so many musicians get blindly lost in the unavoidable pretention of being "avant-garde". Some musicians spend their entire lives attempting to meet the aims of that definition, and are accountable for the merits, importance, detractions and drawback of such a paradoxically narrow-minded approach to music-making. More interesting though are the artists who – though generally working within the confines of mainstream music – take the occasional mental and intellectual vacation with an overly-indulgent avant-garde side [...]

In the pantheon on great "lost" albums, the Beach Boys ' Smile , may be the most sought after by fans. The album was intended be the follow up to the band's seminal 1966 release Pet Sounds . Rumors have swirled for years about the recording sessions for the album, which included a lot of turmoil from within the band and a healthy dose of bizarre behavior from Brian Wilson , eventually leading the album to be officially being scrapped. While songs from the Smile sessions - like Good Vibrations, Surf's Up and [...]

Teen Porn - Loose Fur Pretty fucking obsessed with this jam and everything else from Teen Porn , especially in the headphones. Dark humor perfect for the settling in of Winter, these are my six am [while it's still dark out kind of] morning pump up sounds but I don't want to say pump up and Teen Porn in the same sentence. For our homies in the Czech Republic or North and South Americans that have a few extra anythings [considering conversion rates] to drop towards a fantastic cause, make sure to cop [...]

Teen Porn - Loose Fur Another new jam from the cryptic Teen Porn. This one feature some psyched-out female vocals and what sounds like a distorted elephant providing a backing beat. These guys get more intriguing by the day.

Has rock n' roll ever taught you a new word? On my way to the coffee shop this afternoon, the song "Acquiesce" by Oasis came up on my mp3 player. While grooving out to the song and singing along loudly (it really is a good song, recorded during a brief period when their B-sides were absolutely essential), I remembered that I had never heard the word "acquiesce" prior to purchasing the CD single (the A-side was "Some Might Say"). The 1996 version of myself had to consult my handy Webster's dictionary for the definition. [...]

Jim O'Rourke is still experimenting. There are so many interesting touch points to this guy's career: a member of Gastr del Sol in the '90s, he helped make Wilco's two most experimental albums and became a full-time member of Sonic Youth. He's made solo albums, collaborated with and produced a number of other artists. His work with Jeff Tweedy didn't end with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost Is Born." Tweedy and O'Rourke made two albums under the name Loose Fur . Now O'Rourke lives in Japan and release his solo [...]

I am unbelievably excited about the prospect of a new Jim O'Rourke album. 'The Visitor' (possibly a reference to 'The Man Who Fell To Earth', following on his quirk for naming records after Nicolas Roeg Films - see: 'Insignificance', 'Eureka' & 'Bad Timing ' - or possibly not!) is released at the end of this month via Drag City. I guess I first started paying full attention to O'Rourke's work after watching the flawed, but thoroughly charming film 'Love Liza', the soundbed for which is made up of much of O'Rourkes finest song based material. All of his [...]

so i've done two volumes of this "songs featuring felines" thing, but i've never actually had a feline of any sort. well... tomorrow that will change. we're getting a kitten! i wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but i guess i'm starting to come around. i don't know what we're gonna call it yet, though i've got plenty of great (unappreciated) ideas. so i figured i should make a playlist to welcome the kitten home. unlike past volumes, several of these songs really don't feature felines too much at all... they are [...]

Jeff Tweedy in Bend, OR, from the HAD Archive This tidbit was played only six times at a handful of dates in 2002 and 2003 (including Loose Fur's two night stand at St. Ann's Warehouse), and makes us smile every time we hear it. It's a classic example of Tweedy 's acerbic wit, drenched simultaneously in melancholy, skepticism, and condecension. It also manages to layer a sparse melody on top of an almost classic country chord progression, while the lyrical content is unquestionably modern. [...]

I had bought a couple bags of dope when I left jail. Traded my arrest warrant for a pack of cigarettes. But I didn't do them right away. I went to the meeting. After I shared my tale, a couple fellows told me they were looking for a roommate that could stay clean. It would help them. They invited me back to the apartment that night. We talked for hours, then we all turned in for the night. Within the hour, I walked away from [...]
Sorry about the confusion with my start time last night...I was hoping I'd make it on time to the show, but I was about 40 minutes late, as you may have heard. But it's okay, because this was due to seeing Mirah live (review coming Friday), and she was great. Anyway, thanks to all who listened to the abbreviated show! The acoustic tracks below are from the 2006 DVD Jeff Tweedy - Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest . The songs were recorded over 5 nights in Seattle, Portland, Bend, Oregon, San Francisco and Arcata, California. Loose Fur is a Wilco side project that features Jeff Tweedy, Glenn Kotche and Jim O'Rourke. "The Ruling Class" hasn't left my CD player for the past week. If you've been on Indie Muse before you may know that I'm a huge fan of Wilco. For some reason, though, I never really checked out Tweedy's side project, Loose Fur, until recently. What was I thinking? I don't know. I had their two albums on my computer forever, but somehow didn't realize it was Jeff Tweedy's side project. Anyway, I've been listening to their 2006 release, Born Again in the USA , and really like the album. I still can't believe I didn't listen to this music earlier. If you are a Wilco fan and are unaware [...]
The new Wilco b-side I posted up a couple days ago got me all excited about Wilco again; the past 48 hours have seen me searching through all my favorite old tracks from Tweedy & Co. I definitely have some favorite Jeff Tweedy moments, and I've been thinking about where "One True Vine" might fit in. Ok, it might not be quite that good - Tweedy has blessed us with some seriously astounding moments - but it's still pretty wonderful. Anyhow, here are some of my favorite Tweedy moments... I'll [...]
