Today is the second annual Record Store Day. Stores across the country are holding huge sales, giveaways and special in-store entertainment to encourage people to give iTunes a day off and buy some physical music (Remember? CDs? Vinyl?). In honor of Record Store Day, a number of artists are releasing exclusive special edition singles and EPs. Tom Waits, who is releasing an exclusive limited edition 7" single, explained his appreciation of record stores thusly: "The record store is the livery stable where I can tie up, feed and groom my ears." Well said. [...]

The third installment of my SXSW artists feature. If you're new to the game, I list some of the acts I'm excited about, with mp3s and a brief note about each. So far, I've done A-E, F-J, and today I work the extensive K-O . More to come soon! (See the previous installments at the end of the post.) The Kin - "New Day" [MP3] Brother singer/songwriters from Australia. Accessible, but not without complexities and some pretty harmonies. This song grows on me every time I listen. [...]

These two songs and the voices of two lovely ladies prove that pop does not have to be wimpy or bland. Kylee Swenson provides the stunning vocals of San Francisco's Loquat on their second full-length Secrets of the Sea . The haunting, echoey "Harder Hit" the standout track. It's pretty amazing how many great releases came from Bay Area bands this year, and we were pleased to interview many of these groups on our podcast in 2008. This week's episode features music from twelve of this year's best as featured on our show during the past twelve months. If you like what you hear, check out our feature episodes spotlighting each of these bands. This will be our last podcast of the year, but we'll be continuing regular blogging right into 2009. Happy holidays! About [...]
I've never heard of loquats before, and when I heard of the indie-pop band Loquat it made me think it was some made up word combination of "Lo-fi" and "squat." Though, to hear Loquat speak of the loquat apparently I've been missing out on a lot of quat. Loquat : Throwing Fruit at Nuns . I'm always amazed at the ability of nature to keep its tastiest grubbins as the literal and figurative fruit of a conquest for those with the ingenuity and [...]
I'm a little bored with the electro-pop indie scene. Sampled midi-drums? Arpeggiated synth-strings? No, thank you. Still, there are always exceptions, and bands like The Sea and Cake , Cut Copy and San Francisco's own, Loquat , make great records regardless of their "indie-electronica" classification. Loquat entered the scene in 2005 with It's Yours to Keep , a combination of meticulously crafted, thoughtful melodies and Eno -like soundscapes that pleased critics and casual music fans alike. On their sophomore effort, Secrets of [...]

Every month, we dedicate a week of our podcast to highlighting some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing soon in the San Francisco Bay Area. We've got ten great bands playing some excellent shows this month, so head out and see some live music! About the bands: Portalnd's Starfucker ("German Love") kick off the show with a song from their self-titled debut album. The band's headlining a great show with SF bands Master/Slave ( Feature Podcast ) and [...]

Harder Hit - Loquat In My Sleep - Loquat The new album from Loquat is one of those rare cases where a band will make a series of subtle changes to their approach - all in the direction of producing a more sophisticated, complex sound - and have everything fit perfectly. Usually, when bands try this they crash and burn, producing dull, pointless albums with no soul. This time, precisely the opposite occurred. Secrets of the Sea is chock full of character. Of knowing glances and shy [...]

As you may have gathered from its melodramatic title, Setting Fire To The Great Unknown , Greycoats play a soaring, anthemic brand of music that owes a great deal to pre- Kid A Radiohead. But the group also expands upon that sonic palette, incorporating detours into melancholic new wave ("Goodbye, Sweet Youth, Goodbye"), and more modern-day mainstream balladry (much of the album). The fundamentals of Greycoats' sonic template are strong, but they could also use a lesson or two from Shearwater, the simple-yet-ambitious Okkervil River offshoot to whom Greycoats bear a considerable vocal resemblance. However, seeing as this [...]

This week's podcast episode spotlights San Francisco's Loquat , a quintet who create catchy melodic indie pop with a mix of electronic and traditional rock sounds. In 2005, the band released It's Yours To Keep , a full length debut that continues to win new fans with its seductively catchy songs. In the three years that the band's been working on their next album, their live shows have continued to please crowds, including a set at the Bay Area Takeover that remains one of our South by Southwest highlights. Today, the wait for the band's [...]
Considering the fact that I didn't go to last weekend's Treasure Island Music Festival in San Fracisco, and the pope won't be contributing as often as we'd all like him to, I can't do much in the way of a review. However, I did speak with him about it and he really only had one [...]

And what a weekend it was. The Bay Bridged was on hand to live blog both Day 1 and Day 2 of the Treasure Island Music Festival to capture the vibe and crowds. We also had our photographer Muhammad Asranur running from stage to stage to photograph some of the best moments of the festival up close and personal. With over 3,000 photos taken over the entire weekend, we don't think you'll be disappointed with some of the great shots he captured of the event. [...]
