SPOOK HILL :: SEPTEMBER MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS Walker and I have had this one in the works for a while. We decided a month or so ago (after our last mixtape) that we wanted to try something a bit different from our usual mixes. We settled on the idea of compiling our favorite songs recorded before 2000 that were relatively unknown or obscure (or at least if the artist was relatively known, one of their hidden gems). That was really the only restriction. Interestingly enough, there was a clear divide in the years [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Slumberland Records, which celebrated its 20th anniversary Saturday night at the Bell House in Brooklyn, never suffers the pains of being predictable. Despite being known for a certain sound -- a fuzzy, jangly brand of lo-fi guitar pop -- the venerable indie imprint has released music by a surprisingly diverse bunch of bands, eight of which were on hand for the birthday bash. "It's a label we loved growing up, and that we're honored to be a part of," [...]

>> We were very impressed by The Hush Now 's record release show last Thursday night, and only work and a trip over the weekend kept us from offering something more like a proper review. There are a couple important things to note that underline the fact that The Hush Now is a band to watch. First, this was technically the band's live debut. And we don't just mean this particular line-up of the band, we mean it was their first gig, and The Hush Now was very convincing: no muffed cues, no noticeable botching of anything, [...]
Photo from j03's flickr Lorelei , made me a fan of theirs when I saw them play in Arlington, Virginia at the Go! records Indie Rock Flea Market back in 1995. The Indie Rock Flea Market was one of the coolest things that Go! ever did. They held it in an vacant car dealership and brought in a slew of indie labels to hock their wares. So you had the likes of Teenbeat, Simple Machines, Merge, and Dischord all setting up tables with t-shirts, cds, and records [...]
The Washington DC based Lorelei originally formed right around 1990 as a five piece but was quickly stripped down to a trio after the release of their first single. Their initial stint together lasted all of six years before calling it quits after they released their only full-length, Everyone Must Touch the Stove on Slumberland in 1994. The album was released sort of right on the tail end of the whole shoegaze wave of the early nineties, which may have actually been a good thing for the band because it [...]
I've had two requests for Lorelei, possibly from two different people. That makes Lorelei the most requested band to be featured on this blog. Pip, pip! Capitol, capitol! I'm happy to repeat and extend my previous offering , because this great single, released on Slumberland Records way back in 1991, should be heard by darn near every fan of indie pop. At long last, another 5-star-er from my not-so-vast collection. I put Lorelei's "Sometimes..." right up there with Velocity Girl's "Forgotten Favourite" and Primal Scream's "Velocity Girl" on the mantle of indie pop feel goodness. This song is from their first 7", released on Slumberland Records in 1991. By the b-side, they were already noticeably darker. By their next release, their chanteuse was gone and their metamorphosis into an angular, abstract indie rock band was complete. They're still making music, as you can read about here . I like their music on both sides of the cocoon, but The Bitter [...]

Footage: Lorelei Cover Lilys' "February 14th" | Slumberland 20th Anniversary
Inveterate, jet-setting shoegaze junky and friend of Clicky Clicky mgrooves flew in from the left coast for the Slumberland 20th Anniversary shows in D.C. and Brooklyn last weekend, and captured the video above of Lorelei encoring with former labelmate Lilys ' kaleidoscopic debut single. It's not the entire performance (the beginning is cut off), but it is quite awesome, and we suspect that if you watch until the huge transition at 2:30 you're mind may be blown. So while our dream of Lilys performing a surprise set during the celebration did not come [...]

Oh, To Feel The Gentle Slumber
The DC founded, Slumberland Records, celebrated their twenty-year existence with a more than colossal show on Friday at the Black Cat. With a clown car of acts squeezed into the Cat's normal time slot, fanatics of the label were able cheer wildly along to the likes of Brown Recluse, Pants Yell!, Frankie Rose & The [...]

Cocteau Twins Revival
