Poor Baby Jesus. Think what you will about Him, but the Dude's heart was in the right place - presuming He existed, at least. In any event, the Guy's birthday has been so clouded by consumerism, by disappointment, familial and societal obligation ... well, in that respect, why should He be any different than the rest of us? But on the other hand, who else do you know whose birthday is marked by giving other people presents? And why do we all have to share that one Birthday song, while He gets about a thousand of 'em? Family Vineyard has issued a complete collection of Connors' "Airs", short pieces inspired by O'Carolan's and other Irish airs. The two disc set, As Roses Bow includes recordings from 1992-2002, many of which originally appeared on albums that are long out of print. Most pieces range from around 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes and still capture Connors' signature sparse ethereal blues even when projected through a specified form such as this. The project in its entirety can be a bit overwhelming, spanning a full 43 tracks, but each piece has its own spatial beauty and delicate sadness [...]
Scientists at Oxford have made a mathematical study that seems to prove the existence of parallel universe. So says the prestigious news source " The Press Association ," which I've never heard of until right now and will probably never hear from again. It sounds like the name of a fake business that wants to make money off potential idiots who cannot tell the difference between the Associate Press and this Press Association. It reminds me of that movie Boiler Room, when the dropout kid goes to work for a wire house called J.T. Marlin (see: J.P. Morgan). One expert [...]

Photo credit: omnia Mt Macedon Cemetery in Victoria, Australia is home to Peter Schipperheyn 's dramatic sculpture "Asleep". It is one of the most intriguing and beautiful contemporary works of art I've come across in recent years. The beautiful contradiction between the young women's vulnerability and the unsettling surroundings of the cemetery. The way her right hand lovingly grips the edge of the tombstone. It simply takes my breath away every time I look at it. The story goes that the artist was commissioned by a woman to make this sculpture [...]

Family Vineyard really pulled out all the stops in this three volume collection of singles, unreleased, collaborations and compilation appearances by Loren Connors (look [...]

Loren Connors has been a fixture of avant garde music for decades. He has collaborated with musicians that push the limits of recorded sound; Keiji Haino, Alan Licht, Jim O'Rourke, Chan Marshall, Darin Gray, Rafael Toral, John Fahey, Thurston Moore, Henry Kaiser and Dean Roberts to name a few. He is the kind of artist who treats his instrument like a brush; emitting color as much as sound. This may only come naturally since Connors was traditionally trained in the visual arts but gave it up stating that "my music is more original than my painting." I've never witnessed his [...]
