On the heels of Jack White's new album announcement as well as the unveiling of Blunderbuss 's first single " Love Interruption ," we thought it was time to revisit the hits - not the literal ones , unfortunately - of White's wide-reaching, strange and prolific career so far. So, here's 13 of Jack White's most memorable collaborations. Sorry Bobby D . For once, you didn't make the cut. 13. Insane Clown Posse and JEFF The Brotherhood w/ Jack White Definitely one of the higher-ranking moments in Jack White's "WTF?" register, White [...]

By Kristen Bialik Movie - Nashville (Robert Altman, 1975) Watch more on Network Awesome Nashville Tennessee has earned a star on the map for many things: state capital, "Music City," "Athens of the South," and for Robert Altman fans, the site of the 1975 classic Nashville. Befitting a place known for twangy tunes and an imitation Parthenon, Altman's two and half hour long [...]

Christmas and country music go together like peas and carrots. It's that time of year where Santa corrals up his steeds, puts on his spurs, and delivers presents to all of the good little cowpokes who have never heard of, much less seen, snow. Don't mind that flask of shine that Santa has stashed in his leather vest. It's hard work delivering present all over the world! And if you are an extra good little rocker, Santa may bring you a new steel gee-tar for Christmas. Yeee-Haw! Brenda Lee - I'm Gonna Lasso [...]

Seeing as the History of Country series is proving so popular, let us put on a Santa-red Stetson and have a country Christmas. This lot is old-skool: Ernest Tubb riffs (badly) on his 1941 honky tonk classic, Loretta Lynn socks it to it disagreeable Santa, while Brenda Lee aims to lassoo him, yee ha. George Jones goes X-Mas twisting, and Buck Jones provides some serious pathos. And if you had to choose one man to sing Little Drummer Boy, it would have to be Johnny Cash, right? Hey, even horrid old Jingle bloody Bells sounds good here! [...]

There are the essential albums that need to be in everyone's collection. There are the personal favorites, the ones that aren't highly acclaimed but still get played every once in a while. And then there are the albums that you stick in the back of your collection because you want to forget that you spent money on them. "Own It or Disown It" gives the writer the opportunity to look at such discarded albums and determine if they are diamonds in the rough or if they deserve to be used as mini-frisbees. [...]

Truthfully and solipsistically, I wish you cared about me and the rest of the writers at Consequence of Sound so much that you'd want to hear our most personal thoughts on music, because you'd make our jobs way easier. I wish that I could just tell you that the new Atlas Sound album was "awesome, man. So good!" and that Lulu was "just sad, you know?" It's what I tell my friends, and it's probably what you tell your friends, too, and it's the absolute pith and genesis of every word written on music - that first impulse you say [...]

Country music legend Loretta Lynn was forced to cancel a concert in Durham, North Carolina this past weekend as she battles pneumonia in the hospital. Doctors said that the 76-year old singer "will continue to need rest" according to a statement on her official website. The statement continued "Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates." She has also already cancelled a performance scheduled for this coming Saturday night in Ashland, Kentucky. Tickets for the cancelled shows will be honored when the dates are rescheduled. Get well soon Loretta! Your [...]

The traditional country stars — Conway Twitty, George Jones, Tammy Wynette Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride — were still selling many records in the 1970s, and periodically crossed over to the pop charts. Singers like Donna Fargo evoked the good old days with happy songs like The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA. These were still the Opry years — in fact, in 1972 the Grand Ole Opry opened a theme park called Opryland, and wo years later moved out of its long-time home, the Ryman Theatre, to Opryland. But the Nashville scene no longer monopolised country, [...]

Country music legend, Loretta Lynn, was hospitalized this weekend with pneumonia before a show in Kentucky.
Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a satisfying weekend -- I did a lot of reading and cleaning and grits-eating.

I just wrote an article for my Ourstage "Sound And Vision" column on "Why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Is on the Verge of Becoming a Joke," and it got me thinking about the most egregious omissions overall. For the next few years, they should skip the nominating process and focus on righting ongoing wrongs by automatically inducting the most glaringly overlooked acts. Once they're in, then the Hall of Fame should focus on other ways of fixing the induction process. First, they need to decrease the number of annual inductees (three performers [...]

In just one single chord, Loretta Lynn's musical legacy has made its way to another generation of honky tonk lovers. At the 9:30 Club this past Saturday night, alongside a stage full of southern gents, the Coal Miner's Daughter sang a mix of country, gospel, and everything in between. Her influence resonated throughout a jam-packed house of fans. For Ms. Lynn, music is a family affair, the nuclear and the adopted musical one as well. Her daughter, Patsy Lynn, named after Patsy Cline, [...]

Today's topic: pop hits -- or songs that should have been. Katy Perry and Rihanna can rack up No. 1 singles in their sleep. Between them, they've had 16 in the last six years. But the leading ladies of pop haven't always had it so easy. Here are five of the most egregious examples currently in heavy rotation on my iPod. 1) Susanna Hoffs: "My Side of the Bed" Considering how hot the Bangles were in the late '80s, one might have expected the 1991 debut solo single from the band's lead singer to have [...]

Norah Jones' last side project (providing vocals for Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi's Rome ) may have had more star power, but her next outing has just as much retro flair. In January 2012, EMI's Milking Bill Records will release Jones' country-tinged band The Little Willies ' effort of covers, entitled For The Good Times . The 12-track effort features covers from a variety of down-home legends, including Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and many more. The LP is the band's follow-up to 20062s self-titled debut, which featured [...]

It was the age of the country songwriter, with people such as Harlan Howard (Heartaches By The Number), Hank Cochran (I Fall To Pieces), Roger Miller (Billy Bayou), Willie Nelson (Crazy), Mel Tillis (Detroit City), Tom T Hall (Harper Valley PTA) and the Bryants (Love Hurts) creating many classics. Some of them would become stars in their own right. None maybe more so than Kris Kristofferson, a man whose early biography reads like a far-fetched penny novel. Many of the songs he is known for were first recorded by others, sometimes several times. With the arguable exception of Me And [...]
