Our friends over at Hero Hill have outdone themselves on this fine Canada Day . They put together a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot from some of my favorite Canadian indie artists including the Warped 45s , Cam Penner , and The Schomberg Fair . Turning Back the Pages of My Sweet Shattered Dreams contains 36 tracks covering nearly all of Lightfoot's career. Go over to Hero Hill and download this tribute pronto! Cam Penner [...]

It's that time of year again; the week or so at the end of June that every semi-cultured person in Calgary prays for all year, and the memory of which they then hold onto with both hands during the ensuing horrors of Stampede. This is the fourth annual Sled Island Music, Film, and Art Festival in Calgary, and possibly its most mature incarnation yet, will well-rounded and incredible lineups in all three areas of interest. The festival has always been great from its very first year, but it seems to finally be settling into its most fully developed [...]
A string of humorously unintentional expletives unfortunately turned out to be one of the highlights of the Calgary-based singer/songwriter's Sled Island set.

photo by ian darken i'm going to do a bit of a roundup of a few bands that i have been meaning to get to, but thus far havent. lets start off with athens' venice is sinking and their recently released, azar . im probably the only person in the blogoweird that hasnt heard it - may have to do the unimaginable and actually buy it! gasp! the general consensus, from all the reviews i have read, is that its pretty great - that is if you dig the likes of low, [...]
Pretty weak release week. Other than a few big names that are past their prime, the one album I highly recommend is Laura Gibson 's Beasts of Seasons . Arguably one of the best releases of the year so far. :: Air France , No Way Down (101 Distribution) :: The Alternate Routes , A Sucker's Dream (Vanguard) :: August Burns Red , Lost Messengers: The Outtakes (Solid State) :: Black Lips , 200 Million [...]

web site :: label * This review originally ran back in June, but the gripping release from Alberta's Lorrie Matheson - In Vein - was held up in red tape for months. Well, a release date has been set (Feb. 24th/09) so I thought, what better way to get the word out than to re-post a review from almost 8 months ago. " I know the first five drinks they weren't free, but god damn they sure made me feel that way . [...]

web site :: label I know the first five drinks they weren't free, but god damn they sure made me feel that way. Really, that gripping, desperate lyric from Lorrie Matheson's This Beautiful Bottle should be enough for any Canadiana fan. It reeks of solitude, depression and is exactly what root music thrives on: a story about a man, left with nothing but the bottle and the false friendship of the man pouring the drinks. But Matheson is more than a roots artist, as [...]

Aaron Booth will be releasing a new album this month. He's a Calgary singer-songwriter I once called "one of the most promising Canadian singer-songwriters" in a nationally distributed mag . I am prepared to stand by that statement. The new alb is called Back Stories , and you get it from his website at your choice of cost. While you're there, you can snag some more free tunes from Booth's impressive back catalogue. Y'know what else is impressive about Aaron Booth? [...]
