It has concluded. Eight wonderful years of the TV SHOW House M.D. ended on a spectacular finale. Before we get to the ending of House Series finale soundtrack (Season 8 Episode 22) titled 'Everyone Dies", we have to give some credit to the Special mini doc 'Swan Song' featuring a coupe of great tracks from Champion Jack Dupree, The Platters and Caroline Patterson. Here are the songs from Swan Song in list form (Preshow Special). John Barry Orchestra - James Bond Theme (From "Dr. No.") Champion Jack [...]

The Grim Reaper took it relatively easy this month. The headline deaths were those of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs and Robert B Sherman, who with his brother wrote Disney standards for films such as 101 Dalmations , The Jungle Book and Mary Poppins . The idea for Let's Go Fly A Kite, from Mary Poppins , apparently was inspired by the Sherman brothers' father, Al Sherman, who was a songwriter and hobby kitemaker. But perhaps the most interesting lifestory to reach its end in March was that of Australian musician and AIDS activist [...]

I realize the title of this piece might sound a little melodramatic, but for two decades beginning in the mid-1950s Sam Butera was the guy who led - and performed in - the band behind entertainer Louis Prima. That meant he was performing in the shadows of the flamboyant Prima and his wife, singer Keely Smith , one of the most popular musical comedy acts around in those days. The son of a New Orleans butcher who loved music and played a couple of instruments in his spare time, Butera naturally enough grew [...]
Ok you guys... here's the deal. I'm flying out to California tomorrow with my family for a trip to Disney Land. This will not only be my first time on the west coast *insert singing of West Coast by Coconut Records here* it will be my first time in all my 23 years to visit [...]

One of the most popular acts of the 1950s was the husband and wife team of bandleader Louis Prima and singer Keely Smith. Their show included music mixed with comedy and was especially suited for Vegas clubs, but the twosome often appeared on TV and sold a lot of records too - including their biggest hit, the unforgettable 1958 Grammy-winner, "That Old Black Magic" ( clip ). But even though it might have occasionally gotten lost amidst all the comedy, Keely Smith was a pretty good singer, with a sweet, clear voice [...]

It seems as though all of our past/current writers here at The Yellow Stereo have gotten married over the past few years. In 2007, Pablo tied the knot and in response I decided to hastily put together a mix of songs I would want to hear at a wedding. It proved more difficult than I imagined, as every other song I could think of was from Magnetic Fields. That list is here if you wanted to see how that turned out; and oddly enough, it's one of the first links that show up when [...]
Where Robert Palmer meets Louis Prima, "Big Night," and HBO's new Band of Blowhards on Treme. Louis Prima - Big Night - United States - Music - Arts and Entertainment
The Music Of Treme, The Culture of New Orleans Ok, I m officially obsessed with HBO s new show Treme. I can pin point the exact moment when this happened during Episode 1last week but I m gonna save that for a feature article we re working on while I m ...

Pretty neat. I will just post the press release: A Sneak Preview of Performance Film Louis Prima: In Person! at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art on Tuesday, April 27th Co-presented by Ponderosa Stomp Foundation In commemoration of the centennial of Louis Prima's birth—and to celebrate Tony Bennett's portrait of Prima for the official poster of this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Film at the Ogden is proud to present a sneak preview [...]
New Orleans done right. "That boy named Elvis?" Kermit Ruffins pointing at Elvis Costello. "You're just standing there telling me that all you want to do is get high, play some trumpet, and barbecue in New Orleans your whole damned life?" says an exasperated Davis. To which Ruffins replies: "That'll work." Off to catch at least a couple hours sleep, but I'll leave you with some music selections from tonight. Comments coming later, but I'll chime in first on the Louis Prima inclusion. Not only was Prima a native son of [...]

I promised a while back to follow up the first two New York mixes with one in black & white. In the interim, the two Christmas in Black & White mixes ( here and here ) were quite popular, so I hope that this collection of songs about or set in New York, spanning 30 years, will find an audience. And I hope that some of these songs will inspire the listener to seek out more music by some of the artists who are largely forgotten now. [...]

There seems to be a love/hate relationship with Disney for many people. Some people look at them as corny or overly corporate, but it's hard to deny that over the years there's been some absolutely brilliant music that's been produced for their films. These days, Disney music is often nominated for Oscars, but most people forget that there were many famous musicians that graced Disney films back in the day. Louis Prima: I Wan'na Be Like You [ Purchase ] [...]
Awesome cut-up home recording mega-mix from Coldcut's Matt black, back in the late 80's. Pressed on limited white label, including a mash of James brown's 'funky drummer' and Louis Prima's 'King of the swingers', this is great party gear! Elaine's Hella Hipster Hoedown has become a welcome quarterly distraction—I'd be happy if she staged one every weekend. An indie-rock barn dance held the first Saturday this month at Pehrspace in hella non-bucolic South Echo Park, this happening was packed to the paint with veal-eyed darlings of the Eastside rock scene. I could scarce wedge my lean geezer's carcass into the room, much less commandeer one of the authentic hay bales strewn about the room as bovine bric-a-brac, so I tarried outside and talked to the hostess. Being a Dixie lady herself, she was pretty impressed to meet a (half) [...]

So I was having breakfast in this diner I go to and I heard an artist I hadn't really listened to in quite some time. The guy's name is Louis Prima . Most people younger than myself don't know who he is. It's understandable, considering that he's from the Vegas limelight of the mid to late 1950's. However, some people may remember him through more of a pop culture window. Anyone that saw Disney's The Jungle Book may well remember King Louie. Well that voice, my friends, was that of Louis Prima's. Well, he [...]
Columbus, Ohio An improvement on the subject of one of my first posts, an old, upscale little fruit & vegetable market/butcher shop in the Grandview area of town. Louis Prima - Yes, We Have No Bananas* *Warning: earworm
I mentioned in my Susie Suh post that I have a ridiculously huge crush on John Cusack and have had for going on 20 years...it's in my DNA I think and it will never, ever change. And not because he's adorable and endearing in the best ways possible either...he and I seem to share a multitude of opinions and musical tastes and a large part of me is convinced that he surely must be my soul mate.
