Jason Hill has been very busy. As if recently reuniting Louis XIV and performing with the Killers wasn't enough, Hill has also just announced a spring album release with his other band project, Vicky Cryer. Vicky Cryer came together after Louis XIV's break in 2009. Hill converted an old house in Hollywood Hills into a recording studio that was overflowing with instruments and vintage equipment. Hill began writing and hosting recording parties with friends, leading to the creation of Vicky Cryer's first full album, The Synthetic Love of Emotional Engineering . [...]
Expensive Love by Vicky Cryer There are two foremost things you need to know about Vicky Cryer . The first is that the Los Angeles dance-rock collective is not an all-star band. Though it (currently) features the drummers from Muse and Nine Inch Nails, the bassist from The Killers, Julian Casablancas’ keyboardist, and several other notables, this is a band owned solely by Jason Hill; guitarist, singer/songwriter, and leader of the defunct Louis XIV. The second is that despite the feminine name, Vicky Cryer is [...]
Who is this hipster Louis XIV look-alike you ask? King Charles is an English “glam folk” musician. He’s a classically trained vocalist and plays piano, guitar and cello. In 2010, Charles won the International Songwriting Competition (the first Brit to do so) unanimously. He has toured alongside all the English folk stars - Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale and Mumford and Sons. King Charles - “Ivory Road” King Charles - “Love Lust” — Basil
With his band Louis XIV in the deep freeze after three albums and thousands of miles of touring, singer-guitarist Jason Hill needed a change. The San Diegan moved to L.A., bought a house in Laurel Canyon, built a recording studio he calls "Ulysses" and retreated to "a life of staying at home and making records," he says. As new tunes began to take shape — not unlike Louis XIV's material, songs about love, sex and their related currency — Hill called upon friends old and new to help out with the project. And Vicky Cryer was [...]
Purveyors of beards, waist-coats, eyeliner, 70s rock and hooky, kinky tracks, San Diego's Louis XIV gave it another go last week in their hometown at a shitty club called Fluxx, after nearly two years apart. Singer/songwriters Jason Hill and Brian Karscig have been busy with their own solo stuff - Jason produced and played on the new New York Dolls album and is putting together a platter of his own , while Brian created Nervous Wreckords . But after their late-year CONVOY reunion (a band most of 'em [...]
It’s not often a friend of yours says to you over email something like this: “Yeah, so I’ll be heading off to England soon because I’m producing and playing bass on the new New York Dolls album.” Nope. Not often. So when LouisXIV’s singer, producer, musician-type Jason Hill casually mentioned this, I was all over it like a rash. Like, Sylvain Sylvain and David Johansen? PERSONALITY CRISIS? Fah reals? Naturally, I did what only the BackstageRider would do: I sent him off with homework: [...]

Louis XIV was an indie rock quartet from San Diego, California. Known for their sexually provocative lyrics and double meanings, this band was actually banned from playing live in the state of Alabama. I just recently found out that this band had broken up mid-2009. They had a good run. These tracks are what got me into the whole indie-electro bonanza a few years back. RIP. Finding Out True Love Is Blind - Louis XIV [...]

Video premiere: The Nervous Wreckords, ‘Let Them All Talk’
Having been a linchpin in the dirty-glam outfit Louis XIV , Brian Karscig knows a thing or two about swagger. The San Diego-bred singer-guitarist-producer, now fronting the Nervous Wreckords with Lindsay Matheson and Daniel Schraer, also seems acutely aware that his brand of Mick Jagger/Marc Bolan/Bon Scott gamesmanship has its detractors. At whom he fondly thumbs his nose. "They're just jealous," he sings in "Let Them All Talk," the title track to the Nervous Wreckords' debut album, which frames Karscig's signature high voice in all manner of vintage rock riffage. Director Ryan Fitzgerald's [...]

The Supergroup and The Legion of Vicky Cryer
If you're a musician, nothing tops kicking it with your friends and spending hours creating music together into the wee hours of the morning. Jason Hill, frontman of the rock band Louis XIV, wanted a place where he could pursue this pastime with his pals. So, in the spring of 2009, ...
Vicky Cryer: Is it a supergroup?
Does Vicky Cryer count as a supergroup ? It's got Killers bassist Mark Stoermer, Muse drummer Dominic Howard, ex-Jamiroquai bassist Nick Fyffe and ex-Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch and New York Dolls singer David Johanssen involved, which makes it supergroupy. But it's mostly about Louis XIV's Jason Hill, which makes it feel more like a side-project where the session guys are more storied than the heart. Apparently there's a record due out in a matter of days. In the meantime... there's this: -- Visit No Rock [...]
