By Taylor K. Long While record browsing with a friend at Greenpoint's Permanent Records last week, I found a copy of the Long Winters album, When I Pretend To Fall in the .99 section and realized that though I love it, I don't own it in any physical form. The kind clerk informed me that .99 CDs were three for $1, so essentially I could pick out two more CDs for free. When deciding which CDs to get, I wondered, Should I pick something random and hope it's good? What are the odds of something in the .99 section being [...]

It's unusual to introduce yourself just as you're headed out, but stay close for a second: my name's David Bevan and in addition to being a member of Team FADER, I have spent the past year and change editing an older, smaller, scruffier and more temperamental website named The Tripwire. It was and is totally [...]
Monday: Love As Laughter @ Bruar Falls 8pm $8 [ info ] In a world of passing fads and buzz bands isn't it nice to know there are still life long indie rockers such as Love As Laughter making music? It warms our hearts every time we see their name mentioned somewhere and this week they stop by NYC for a quick show at Bruar Falls. Chance are it won't be that quick and it will totally be worth skipping the 24 series finale for. [...]
The latest and great movie soundtrack to feature our favorite indie musicians will come in the form of 180° South , a forthcoming Chris Malloy-directed documentary about adventurers in Patagonia. Modest Mouse frontman Issac Brock's side-project Ugly Casanova contributed eight songs to the film's soundtrack while Shins/Broken Bells leader James Mercer shares two, one of which is a cover of Neil Young's "Journey Through the Past". Jack Johnson!, Love as Laughter, and Mason Jennings will also be heard on the soundtrack when it sees release on June 22nd via Brushfire. According [...]

A new documentary called 180° South about adventurers from Patagonia, a region in the very south of South America, is to have a soundtrack featuring several artists contributing original songs, including Isaac Brock and James Mercer. Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock takes up the name Ugly Casanova once more; the moniker used for his previous solo recordings, and is contributing the majority of the soundtrack with nine songs, eight of which are new ("Hotcha Girls" appeared on the 2001 album Sharpen Your Teeth ). Lead-singer of The Shins, James Mercer, contributes two songs, one of [...]

I didn't want to go to this show. I just didn't. I have always cast a doubtful eye on the Modest Mouse machine, and while I've heard songs I've liked, I've never felt particularly compelled to delve into their back catalog and forge an informed opinion. But I decided to take solace in the fact that there must be a reason so many people adore this group. There must be something made of magic that kept drawing people into the fold. So I went, and I took a chance, jumping into the deep end of the pool. And [...]

The clock is ticking, less than five days and Super Bowl XLIII is upon us! What does this have to do with music? Nothing really, until we went and asked a whole bunch of bands we love and respect who they're pulling for this Sunday in Tampa (just to bring everyone up to speed: it's the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Pittsubrgh Steelers). So keep reading to find out which brave souls remain undaunted by the seven-point spread, who hates the desert, who loves whiskey, who's holding a grudge against Pittsburgh, who loathes industry, who got some help from [...]

"Put It Together" by Love As Laughter which clocks in at 8:16. Let's put it together. Let's build a great song, shall we? All this talk of year-end lists and best of this and tops of that has put us in a reflective state, the kind where we just want to construct something from the ground up and call it our own. We want to put something together, and we want you to come along for the journey. It doesn't matter if your musical chops aren't up to say, Mr. 320 [...]

When EAR FARM considered our impending move and relaunch at the end of 2007, we decided to switch from a scrolling blog format to a more magazine-y layout that would allow for us to highlight a "cover star"/ Band of the Week each week. In doing so we have featured 43 bands over the course of 2008, ranging from the lo-fi jangly noise pop of Throw Me The Statue to the blistering thrash of Goes Cube . We've had relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ), interviews with indie-rock legends (see [...]

Dreading the imminent weather change and dwindling supply of sunlight? Already wistful for the halcyon days of summer? Lucky for us, recent Band of the Week Love As Laughter teamed with fellow Brooklyn-band This Frontier Needs Heroes and director Sebastian Ischer to create a little featurette that updates the all-but-dead beach movie genre with appropriate campy vigor. The short, titled "Beach Bummed", appropriately casts the two bands as "struggling musicians trying to survive in a merciless capitalist society." Hang ten.... Beach Bummed from Sebastian Ischer on [...]

So far i've seen, in order: Love as Laughter, M. Ward, The Whigs, Britt Daniel, Built to Spill, Typhoon, Valiant Arms, Crooked Fingers. And i saw some totally kick ass band playing at Berbati's pan tonight, but i have no idea who they were and I can't figure it out. i stood next to Bobby Bare jr during at the Crooked Fingers show and asked him who was good tomorrow. I got to breeze past all the lines with my Very Impulsive Person pass and it seemed sort of worth it at the sold out shows. [...]
