I made a quick run to Iowa City last week- mostly with the intention of picking up the August issue of Little Village Magazine so I could have a hard copy of the review I wrote for it (Rockygrass band Finnders & Youngberg's new album FY5 ). While I was there, I stopped into the Record Collector to see if there was anything worth picking up. Of course, there was. One great aspect about the Record Collector is that they have a pretty extensive used vinyl section that has a lot of 902s college rock in it! Like a [...]

Last weekend Sherry attended America's Beauty Show for the third year running and I got the opportunity to have some quality time with Chicago's record stores. Friday night we went down to a bar called This Must Be The Place in Lemont, IL to see Chicago R&B phenom The Right Now . We got into town late, so we needed to scoot to try and get there in time to get something to eat. Thankfully the folks there were very accommodating and the food was excellent! [...]
Jam>Love Tractor - Widespread Panic 07.04.08 - Rothbury Festival, Rothbury, MI Creepy, spooky, goodness before the launch into tractor from the six-headed monster.
The Tortoise show at Snake on the Lake started at 3PM in Madison, but Erik, Shawn and I weren't interested in all of the opening acts, so we decided to hit a record store before meeting up with Tom, our taper friend. We stopped at Mad City Music which I've been to a couple of times. The first time Erik and I went there it was for a small Camper Van Beethoven in-store which was really cool. This was a pretty fruitful trip in that I picked up some amazingly pristine copies of Tom Petty albums. Like freakishly [...]

While it's a certainty that a geographical location can be represented musically it's less certain that geography and people can be defined musically. That is, when we hear old time gospel, hillbilly stomps, classic Detroit R & B and West Coast surf it's a short jump from hearing the music to interpreting that each music is the result of a certain disposition; of a pre-existing mood and value system that inhabits the particular region and its people. For example, when I hear "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" or "You Can't Hurry Love" I can easily picture a [...]

An ad for the Massachusetts State Fair (a.k.a. "the Big E") from the September 21, 2007 edition of the [Woburn] Daily Times Chronicle : There's a thin line between whimsy and creepiness. In other Big E news, the fair's planned performance by Ludacris was cancelled due to low ticket sales. Did the folks who booked him think that his frequent mentions of "hoes" referred to the gardening tool? You'd think that folks who'd travel cross-state to gawk at giant pumpkins would be into songs like "P(ussy)-Poppin'" and [...]
I haven't updated in nearly week, want to know why? Because Verizon DSL is a giant pile of shit that can't get their heads out of their asses and fix a shitty connection. I planned a bigger post for today but I don't want to press my luck with uploading files tonight. Hopefully I'll have more this weekend. Argh. Music From The Movie, "Athens, GA - Inside/Out" The Squalls - Na, Na, Na, Na Flat Duo Jets - Crazy Hazy Kisses [...]
