'Not A Beat, Not A Scene' charts the birth and rise to notoriety of the LA Beat scene. While the Low End Theory parties are discussed briefly in the film, a greater emphasis is placed on the wider collection of characters and sounds that make up the scene that's not a scene. Featuring insightful interviews with Juj , Daedelus , MNDSGN and Free The Robots among others, the film also touches on what defines the sound of LA Beat and how to define it. In addition, Daedelus also [...]

Following up last month's surly single "Numbers on the Hoard" released via Stones Throw , L.A.-based producer\mc prodigy Jon Wayne, a.k.a. Jonwayne , sprays eloquently over top a J Dilla joint and offers some down-home words of wisdom. [Jon Wayne, a.k.a. Jonwayne] Wolfey [...]

Max Bell was a Blowedian in a past life. If Busdriver is the adenoidal vocal gymnast and Open Mike Eagle is the smooth and laid back “dark-skinned art baron,” then Nocando is the man in the middle (and the man at the helm of Hellfyre Club), with Busdriver’s seemingly inexhaustible energy and Mike’s ability to meticulously articulate. Bred in the trenches of the freestyle battle scene (see his ’07 Scribble Jam win), where every punch line needs to land, to be heard in order to ensure [...]
TiDUS is more well-known for his sharp rap than his soft melodies ; but as many other great producers he knows how to juggle with atmospheres. For Kitsuné AMERICA 2 TiDUS signs an ethereal track, enhanced with twitchy rhythms and discreet beatboxing that takes you on a travel through the ghostly female voice. “Say It” [...]

During a recent Flying Lotus set at The Low End Theory, Earl Sweatshirt hoped on stage, debuting new music to the crowd, which included a Pharrell-produced track ‘Burgandy’, “Hive” which Earl produced himself. He and Mac Miller also performed a new track titled “Guild”. Seems like these track will be on Earl’s debut album Doris , dropping later this year.

Max Bell spent time among the wise, went through a garment renaissance. If you listen to '90s hip-hop, you'll know there's no shortage of references to Nautica, the nautical-inspired clothing brand turned street-wear du jour for hustlers, thugs, and (I'm guessing) all Wu members pre-Wu-Wear. Biggie claimed he would put "mad slugs through your Nautica.' Last year, OC even dropped a track called "Nautica," with its sound firmly rooted in the '90s. But here in L.A., there's no need for heavy Nautica jackets. Some over-priced organic coffee and a handlebar mustache and you [...]

"Bonobo are set to release their new album 'The North Borders' through Ninja Tune on April 1st. A mainstay of the Ninja Tune family, Bonobo suddenly found himself thrust to the forefront following the release of 'Black Sands' back in 2010. A wonderful album, it's languid beats and hazy production seemed to match trip hop's template to the newer sounds of Low End Theory. Sparking a worldwide tour, Bonobo also commissioned a remix album which - unusually - worked as a wonderful album [...]
![Speak! – Hilfigers [MP3] | Live at Low End Theory Dec. 26, 2012](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4667182_lg.jpg)
It seems as though Speak! has finally tired of people asking for new music via Twitter and decided to drop a new track to keep the fiends at bay while he completes his forthcoming album, Gnarly Davidson vs. The Marlboro Men . Over a Bill Ding production, crafted from break-beat drums and hypnotic keystrokes, the hair aficionado seizes the release as an opportunity to remind you he can easily go bar to bar with many, if not all the rappers on the scene today. "This is just something for you to bump. A [...]
Here's some (rough) footage from the gig Captain Murphy played at Los Angeles’ Low End Theory night at the Airliner last week: And here's the moment he revealed himself as Flying Lotus :

So, after a few weeks of wondering who animated hip-hop newcomer Captain Murphy is, two nights ago all was revealed at Los Angeles' Low End Theory night at the Airliner . Captain Murphy isn't Tyler The Creator, Madvillain or Earl Sweatshirt - it's none other than Flying Lotus . And post-gig-unveiling, Fly-Lo seemed quite amused with himself - check out [...]

Erykah Badu recently DJ’ed the Low End Theory party on Boiler Room TV. The Low End Theory is notorious for getting high profile musicians like Thom Yorke to play the weekly staple for left of center of parties in Los Angeles.

Saluden a The Gaslamp Killer al fondo
Do you know what today is? Yes, smartass, it's Sept. 24 and a relatively chilly day down here in Raleigh, N.C.—and most spots in the States, I'm sure. But beyond that, today serves as the 21st anniversary of the release A Tribe Called Quest 's classic sophomore album, The Low End Theory . That's right: 21 years ago today, the world got the chance to hear Q-Tip , Phife Dawg , and Ali Shaheed Muhammad not only overcome the so-called "sophomore slump." These guys fucking destroyed it. Beyond that, they cemented [...]

It's the third in a monthly series of lit events, and this month, the talent level is huge . Low End Theory MC (in every sense of the term "Master of Ceremonies") Nocando is heading up the pack on the poetry side, but then again, poet and noise architect Jean-Paul Garnier has tons of fantastic lines of verse to read from, and Gitane DeMone from Christian Death will likely bring some disturbing stories to tell. D.M. Collins and Lina Lecaro are representing the press, while Erin West , [...]
