I've been meaning to write about Boulder-based Alex B's excellent Moments for the last month, but a Low End Theory appearance finally compelled me to do a post about it at Pop & Hiss . For fans of my most Cam'ron-purple prose, here's what I had to say about "Getting to Know You," the latest leak from the man whose fractured but funky sonics put him in line with peers like Nosaj Thing, Take, and Free the Robots: "Bookended by Lilla D’mone’s buoyant coo, “Getting to Know You” is partly trip-hop reinvented for the medical marijuana set, [...]

Shlohmo's recently re-tweeted the wisdom that when in doubt, play 90s R&B. Considering he's about 12-years old (or 20, if you're on that the whole "factual accuracy" trip), I suspect he would file his remixes of Khia's "My Neck, My Back" and Montell Jordan's "This is We Do It" under the umbrella of classic R&B. Personally, if I were a DJ and twerking the top 40-canon, I would probably flip Silk's "Freak Me" and something on Diary of a Mad Band - preferably, "Jodecidal Hotline," which I once dialed and needless to say, I was not offered a [...]

Shlohmo and the dudes over at WEDIDIT Collective were nice enough to put up a track I've been looking for ever since I had heard it a few months ago at Low End Theory . This remix of Khia's "My Neck, My Back" is definitely one of the most fun tracks I've heard in quite a while. One thing that's certain is I will DEFINITELY be dropping this track at the next shows I'll be playing. Be sure to hit up the guys at WEDIDIT and congratulate them on a proper release! Oh, and as a bonus [...]

It's hour 36 and the the hyperbolic decompression from Friday night's show continues. By all accounts, the evening was a smashing success. Rah Al Milio's mushroom fondue went over well, 5 02 Clock Shadowboxers revived Blue Oyster Cult for the millenial generation, Nocando taught the bespectacled and be-blazered set how to freestyle, and The Holloys may or may not be taking me to a Native American shaman sometime soon. A sincere thank you to those who came, helped spread the word, offered me free drugs. Thankfully, the Low End Theory dropped it's 14th consecutive end-to-end burner this weekend, [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =iBxKOmSIORE Admittedly, I get occasionally over-enthusiastic in my hometown pride - consider it overcompensation for the previous decade in which I hung my head with shame. But it's worth noting again that Free The Robot s' Ctrl Alt Delete is a great album and now finally available for purchase . For those in town, the release party is tonight at Low End and promises to be epic. But enough of me being a homer - the MTV-approved promo videos can do the convincing for me. If [...]

First and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone who came out to Low End Theory on Wednesday. ESPECIALLY Senay Kenfe (evidently kid city's biggest fan) for biking 24 miles to see me play! That's dedication if you ask me. You should all hit him up and tell him how much of a boss he is. It was an overall incredible night and I gotta say these events just keep getting better and better every week. Next week is no exception as we are all in for a special treat. Free the Robots will be performing and [...]

In lieu of being able to actually enjoy the Airliner's lax weed policy and jumbo-sized Fat Tires, the Low End podcasts offer an ideal window into what makes the weekly so unique. But until now, they've neglected to feature Nocando as anything more than a host. Wisely, Daddy Kev enlists his Alpha Pup protege and fellow resident to decimate an array of beats ranging from the Joker's "Snake Eater" and Flying Lotus's remix of "I Feel Like Dying," to "All the Way Turnt Up" and "Exhibit C." Written and recorded in a single night, James McCall proves why [...]
In retrospect, it was the free tequila at that third South By Southwest party that did it. And there was that energy drink you downed, despite the fact you'd never heard of it (hey, it was free). Of course the Southern Comfort at party five didn't help either. Nor did the eleven beers between party one and party seven (3 micro-brews, 2 Shiners, 5 PBRs, 1 new crap beer Budweiser is pushing). The fact that this unholy blend of alcohol is now fighting it out with the bratwurst and street pizza you consumed yesterday is only complicating matters. Stomach hates [...]

Science has failed us. We were supposed to get hover conversions and robot vassals who could keep our sky castles tidy, while making us homemade guacamole and new-fangled old fashioneds. Yet as the new millennium rolls into its second decade, the most popular robotics involve Megan Fox's stilted theatrics in Transformers . Granted, there is Robot Koch and Daft Punk, but we're all deluding ourselves if they can bridge the gap between pliant automatons and our sad sad reality. Chris Alfaro, who records as Free the Robots , attempts to cover the difference on [...]

It's been a while since Free The Robots dropped his debut EP onto the world and in that time his contemporaries on the West Coast scene such as Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing have firmly wedged themselves into our collective psyche. Now finally we have a full length episode of the FTR show and it's certainly been worth the wait. The name of Chris Alfaro's project is most definitely apt. This is the kind of freedom that [...]

Taylor and I were able to attend Low End Theory in Los Angeles this past week which was hosted by the label Friends of Friends . Playing there were residents Daddy Kev and DJ Nobody who were accompanied by MC Nocando and in addition to these acts was Ernest Gonzales ( click here for post on EG ), and Shlohmo (not to be confused with famous UK beatboxer) whose incredible performances made for one of the best nights that Low End Theory has had to offer. Shlohmo's live performance [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =WAIAGA-8EwA The mission statement of Ernest Gonzales's Exponential imprint claims that it makes "electronic music for humans" - an aspiration almost as well-worn as the Oscar Wilde pun in the headline. But there's an emotional warmth to the San Antonio native's melancholy synthesis of acoustic guitars, 8-Bit nostalgia, and melting synths. Sonically, it's a distant cousin to the bleary laments of the "glo-fi" brigade that elicited hype and hate from the quarters of the Internet who actively enjoy discussing Vampire Weekend over horchata at dinner parties. But rather than layer [...]

Nocando feat. Busdriver - Two Track Mind from Fresh Coast on Vimeo . The latest video from Jimmy the Lock provides a visual for possibly my favorite song from the record. A Gangstarr sample and a dope Busdriver guest spot will do that. The clip is filled with girls who look like they regularly attend Vinyasa yoga classes in Silverlake and provides more empirical evidence that Busdriver has the best cardigan collection this side of Mr. Rogers. I've said enough good things about the record , so I'll [...]

You already know by now. The 12th installment of the LET podcast eschews Dirty Dozen clips for Shlohmo's decision to sample the hell out of Half Baked. Contemporary jeep music. The other half is manned by D-Styles, who brews a head-bobbing blend of Project Pat, "Welcome to Jamrock," M.I.A., and dubstep remixes of " Hip-Hop. " We even get Jimmy Van and Richard's Hieronymous' " I Weigh With Kilo's ," which prominent Starksologists may recall . For those too young to recognize Dave Cuasito from the days when he owned Web [...]

King Cannibal finds pleasure in dark, gritty beats that barely support a booty shake. Instead, take the lyrics to “Colder Still” off his latest, Let the Night Roar : “I believe in death. I believe in disease. In justice, torture and anger. I believe in murder.” This interview by Daiana Feuer.

This mix by Gas Lamp Killer titled "The Kutmah", is unorthodox, eclectic fuckury. Bass heavy beats of electronic drum & bass errupt throughout the mix, discovering some raw beats along the way.
