Monday's Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest was a really, really good time, and Low Red Land 's final performance ever was appropriately heartfelt and nostalgia-inducing. Perhaps a little more surprisingly, considering how long it's been since the trio last played together, they sounded as tight and powerful as ever, and we briefly considered rushing the stage to beg them to reconsider the many new endeavors that necessitate the band's dissolution. Instead, Low Red Land's set served as a fitting end to a day [...]

This July 4th, come spend your holiday with us on the El Rio patio for the Sixth Annual El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest (3pm, $8, 21+). Six great bands are on deck to help celebrate the things that make this country great: indie music and afternoon beers. Oh, and freedom. Definitely freedom. By this point, we hopefully don't need to sell you on the many merits of John Vanderslice and Tartufi , two of our favorite local acts/comrades, but [...]

The Big Time Freedom Fest returns for its fifth year at El Rio this Saturday, July 3rd, presented by Hippies Are Dead . In lieu of the more traditional patriotic party, this particular Freedom Fest celebrates a variety of local and out-of-town bands, the (hopefully) warm holiday weekend and El Rio's excellent back patio. This year's lineup is as follows: Sands (formerly Dame Satan; with Neil John Thompson from Low Red Land ) Finn Riggins (from Idaho) Slow Trucks [...]

Just like you can't keep a good man down, you can't keep a good band down either. Brooklyn-based Appomattox , fine purveyors of what I would call exciting indie rock, made a fine showing in a short 40-minute set played at the Red and Black Bar in Washington last night. This is one animated band. Singer/guitarist Nick Gaynier shreds like a man possessed and somehow (I really don't know how he does it) delivers the lyrics to the band's songs with similar gusto. The songs are largely upbeat [...]
Low Red Land US tour dates San Francisco based indie rockers, Low Red Land have begun their national tour. The tour will have them sharing the stage on many nights with Appomattox and a couple with Jared Grabb (Scouts Honor). Low Red Land will also be performing at this year's Fest in Gainesville, FL over Halloween weekend. The band is on tour in support of their album " Dog's Hymns ", which was self-released on CD and digitally on Thinker Thought Records last [...]

I'm back! Miss me? I bet you were all like, "Where am I going to get my music fix?!? GAAA!!" Well calm down, I'm here to save you from mediocrity and things like that. First off I had a very good vacation out in New York with the family and friends. Took some time out to listen to the new Gifts From Enola, Riceboy Sleeps, Here We Go Magic, Dirty Projectors, and Marissa Nadler . All are very good and I should have brief reviews up shortly. So lets get a move on and showcase some this [...]

I'm going to be attempting to split my time between two very distant shows going on in San Francisco Saturday night - and you should too. Our friends over at The Deli:SF ( who are just about to finish their band of the year contest ) are presenting a great rock show over at the Hemlock Tavern featuring Low Red Land (one of whom just started a delicious local BBQ company ), Ketman (Boston), and Teeeth . If you missed out, Low Red Land kicked off our video podcast [...]

The Details: Recorded [mostly] at The Hanger in Sacramento with engineer Robert Cheek tweaking the "knobs" and yanking on 'levers" - oh and manning the sound board - in July and August of 2008. The Facts: Dog's Hymns is an amazing representation of how dynamic and proficient Low Red Land is at laying down a sound that is at once vital and fluid, both essential and inescapably entrancing. The album is able to capture the raw energies of their live set while still projecting a product that is [...]

2008 found a number of fantastic local albums seeing release (and one, Tartufi's Nests of Wave and Wire , seeing a delay that only means it will be my favorite album of 2009), and the best, by far, is Dame Satan 's Beaches and Bridges . It's a stunning, expansive album that swells and breathes, building on impressive vocal interplay and tasteful musicianship. Life on the road is an amazing experience. It is not, to many people's disappointment, full of drugs and random sex and tons of cash. Don't get me wrong, if those things presented themselves I wouldn't turn them down, but to be realistic it would take a lot of drugs and even more cash to convince somebody to have sex with a short balding Italian with a giant mustache like myself. No, life on the road for us is about trying to spread our music to as many people as [...]

With everyone going to or coming from CMJ in New York, the IA region has a ton of shows coming through the area. Not many multiple city stops to tell you about, but plenty of local and one-off shows. Toronto's Born Ruffians is one of the bands making multiple stops. They are on tour with fellow Canadians Plants & Animals . Friday, they take on DC at the Rock & Roll Hotel. For the remainder of the weekend, sBach joins the [...]

Photo Credit Springing forth from the revitalized Bay Area indie music scene, San Francisco's Low Red Land continue to impress with their latest, Dog's Hymns. Building upon initially spare folk and country arrangements, the songs quickly morph and bend in unexpected and beautiful directions. The compositions ebb and flow between alt-country twang and yelping harmonies, ATDI neo-prog freak-outs, and the driving, over-driven guitars of a Neil Young and Crazy Horse garage work-out. Even more impressive, each song flows into the nex. The album is whole standing as a [...]

Low Red Land to release "Dog's Hymns" on Thinker Thought Thinker Thought Records will be releasing the new album from San Francisco, CA's Low Red Land titled " Dog's Hymns " next month. Their music has been likened to that of Son Volt , Lucero , and Drive-By Truckers . Come November, catch Low Red Land performing at The Fest in Gainesville, FL. Check out more tour dates and their music here .

If you're looking for a taste of what's up and coming on the local music scene, Slim's is your spot this Thursday night: Tartufi , Built For The Sea , and Low Red Land will all be playing, and all releasing new discs - on the same night! All three bands definitely seem to fall pretty firmly into the "atmospheric indie rock" department, but we were pleasantly surprised by the fact that each seems to be pretty firmly defining their own flavor. Low Red Land has some nice fuzzy distortion [...]
