[Happy birthday to Paul Simon, and here's what's on tap tonight:] Bob Dylan starts a three-night engagement at the Palladium, and considering the forecast I wonder whether we'll hear "Rainy Day Women." Johnny Rivers opens — "Secret Agent Man" was one of the first 45s I owned. ... It'll be a night of well-crafted songs and great harmonies at the Troubadour, where Jay Nash , Low Stars and Shane Alexander comprise the bill. ... At Spaceland, it's "The [...]

Far be it from me to piss off record company reps and never get any more free music, but really – this latest purging of the mailbox yielded some pretty slim pickings. A lot of remixes of this or of that; a lot of whiny "indie" bands; a lot of general shite, to be quite honest. Where are the damn rock and roll bands? Did they take April off? The stuff I've posted is the best of the litter – make of that what you will. There are a couple of decent things here: The Army Navy [...]
Lowstar, one of the first bands we'd heard from when Local Vertical was just a baby blog-and sadly one band that still seems to fly under the radar-has some new music out and not surprisingly it's just fantastic. Four tracks make up the Natural High EP, and even though it's only four it was very difficult to choose which one to share. But you can hear all of them at the band's website as we felt like torturing you into a couple of mouse clicks. Lowstar is a London-based four-piece band that has a knack for killer guitars, appropriate lyrics, [...]

This is for my two friends who called me unexpectedly yesterday. We have known each other for decades, and neither the years, nor distance, nor age, or not acting our age, or drunk dialing from the other side of the country can change how we feel about each other. Thanks, guys. I love you too. The Pretenders: You Know Who Your Friends Are from Loose Screw (2002) Website | Buy Low Stars: Calling All Friends from Low Stars (2007) [...]

We would like to introduce you to Lowstar . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Big noise coming at you like a rolling boulder jarred loose by a sudden spring thaw." What did you think? It's been a little more than a month since I've dug into the Licorice Pizza mailbag, so I figure it's about time, before the gentle people who send me music start to think I hate them. I'll just blame the holidays for the delay.... So, without further delay, and in alphabetical order, here is some of the latest music to find its way to me. ~~~~~~~~~~ 4hero (feat. Lowstar are a rock band, but when I explained we were only going to be interested in posting their songs when they hit their Johnny Cash phase Ian from the band sent us this - the cheese-fest that is George Michael's finest moment (other than careless whisper's sax break) slowed down, bit of lap steel and a touch of glockenspiel. Rather affecting it is too. Happy new year! Listen: Lowstar - Last Chrismas Official in other news - there's a new AMC album out in February apparently.

One neat thing about having a music blog to mess with is once you get a bit established you discover, one way or another, some really good bands. And every now and then, a really great band. Ian, Keith, Rob and another Ian are Lowstar, a 4-piece London-based band with some Audioslave-sounding guitars and awesome vocals. Upon hearing their work I instantly knew I'd found another favorite band; look me square in the monitor and tell mew you don't like this. I was surprised to see they've only had about 3200 profile views on their My Space page, hopefully we [...]
It's nice to hear music you haven't heard in a year. But when it's the same song you've heard since childhood, it's kind of like, "C'mon, can we change things up a bit?" That's why I get kind of excited when I hear other artists and bands do renditions of older Christmas songs or make up their own. However, some people just aren't too crazy about Christmas songs. Whatever their reason, I don't completely understand why. Christmas songs always seemed to bring an apprehension for seeing family and friends. Also, it's just great to listen to the [...]

Lowstar is a band out of London, England. I promised to do a post about them after liking what I heard (I actually decided it couldn't hurt to ask a few interview questions since I need to work on it but I got lazy). Lowstar , I would describe as harder sounding and I feel as if their sound is more like that of 90s popular rock. I wanted to bring up Bush as an example or maybe the harder Audioslave stuff. Either way it sounds grungy to me but Lowstar has [...]
Lowstar is a hard rock band hailing from London. (The majority of the new music I've come across is all from the UK. Wonder how that keeps happening...) Lowstar is all about the loud rock and will definitely pick up your spirits -- perfect for getting rid of the winter blues. Alphabet Blues Drone Connected

Do you like to do things spontaneously? I do. Last week I unexpectedly got Friday off from work and wondered, what fun thing can I do? I thought of WXPN 's Free at Noon concerts and decided to go, no matter who was playing. Turns out I got to hear the Low Stars . Gosh, their music is really nice. What does that mean? Well, they consist of four (really cute) acoustic-guitar-playing guys [...]
