This is a picture of Sarabeth Tucek. She makes music that's kinda of a downer, but it's like listening to aural agony, and it's amazing right after a late night of drinking with friends or if you just ran over a squirrel or something like that. Anyway, I thought this picture was just all kinds [...]

Frank Yang Sunday night's Crooked Fingers show had a number of things going against it. For starters, it was a Sunday night. The Sunday night of a long weekend. The Sunday night of a long weekend during Pride. But what it had going for it was that it was a Crooked Fingers show. But even for the Eric Bachmann faithful, the show had the stacked against it somewhat for what it wasn't, and that's an Archers Of Loaf show. Indeed, only the need to transport gear for [...]
On the spur of the moment I threw down this list on my tumblr earlier today, so I thought I'd re-post here, since I have the freedom to make a little mini-mix for you (re-ordered for better flow). It's a short list (with the caveat that I heard a lot of albums that were good , but you all want something better than good, right?): Low: C'mon Mountains: Air Museum Rene Hell: The Terminal Symphony Tim Hecker: [...]

Cities Aviv's hip-hop/experimental album, 'Digital Lows', self-released May 2011, holds a lot of promise for the young Memphis-born lyricist and rapper. His lyrics are well articulated, moralistic, and intelligent. The instruments accompanying each track offer serious variety, ranging from soft to percussion-heavy and brooding. 'Digital Lows' provides the listener with diversity in every aspect of the meaning. 'Tongue Kisser' and 'Black Box' are two great examples of this. In the former, the almost incoherent voice of a female repeating broken phrases is both haunting and captivating. 'Black Box' featuring Fille Catatonique is all about a collective 'scream for [...]

Playlist is a new (largely self-explanatory) feature, curated by members of Team FG. Simon has the pleasure of cutting the ribbon for our first Playlist - tracking his favourite albums of the year so far. Words: Simon Opie We're half way through 2011 and with the Fete de la Musique here in Paris marking the equinox, it's a great day to be out on the streets. If you've never tried it, by [...]

[The New Classics is a reoccurring segment in which we examine our favorite indie releases that are bound to replace our parent's "classic rock" stash hidden in the attic or the basement. These aren't reviews, these are uneditied testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Can we get a witness?] Artist: Low Album: The Great Destroyer Released: 2004 Label: Sub Pop Words by [...]

Lower Dens: photo by Michael Ligon Over the last several years NXNE has taken strides to improve, one factor being that it kicks off stronger on the Wednesday night than it had historically. The Thursday night of the festival traditionally was the official first night of the festival but in recent years Wednesday night has provided more musical options, I guess to satiate the appetite of festival-goers who couldn't wait to get started. While generally I find this a good thing, this year I'd eased slowly into this year's festival with only [...]

As we approach the halfway point in 2011, I wanted to set up some stakes for the best albums of the year so far, since there have been just a metric ton of outstanding indie rock releases in these first six months and I don't want to forget any hidden gems as we get later into the year. This year hasn't quite seen the star power of last year -- when Wolf Parade, The National, and Arcade Fire were among the major releases, but at least in my mind, the quality has been just as strong. There were really five [...]
Oh folks. There are good times to be had, and I am making damned sure that I have each and every one. Last night was no exception. After finishing off the last of my Oinkster burger I took a quick disco nap and then headed over to West Hollywood to party with some friends. Unspeakable [...]
Duluth natives Low love Democrats as much as you do. They'll be showing just how much tomorrow at Painter Park, where the DFL is hosting a Blue BBQ to celebrate progress (and summer, obviously)

Video: Vimeo – YouTube Photos: Flickr – Blueback Hotrod Free mp3 downloads: zip file (right click – save as) I first got into The Scottish Enlightenment back in 2007 when they releases the Eyes single on Moojuice Records. Mark Lanegan sing Nick Lowe's 'The Beast in Me', a song most associated with Johnny Cash, with more than a hint of regret.
