Asthmatic Kitty Records has some pretty cool stuff going on with their catalog series that includes a number of popular artists playing instrumental music based on certain themes (Insomnia, Tropical Savagery, Memory). Their hope is that this music will eventually play as background music for when you're doing dishes, commuting, cooking, sleeping (or trying [...]

Kissy Sell Out "Go Explode" Do you think this guy has actually accidentally lit a few girls' hair on fire while attempting to flirt with them? I really hope this is not a case of "write what you know." Then again, the clumsiness and anxiety in this song is so potent, it can't possibly come from anything but lived experience. The lovely thing about this tune, though, is that he's smiling cheerfully through his ridiculous awkwardness, and there's a genuine optimism about his ability to overcome it, and actually have some sort of moment of triumph, [...]

Asthmatic Kitty , the label home and Michigan outpost of Sufjan Stevens, has an interesting record series called Library Catalog devoted to music basically prepped for a utilitarian role. What that is, or turns out to be seems ambiguous. They write of series: "for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office, or personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elevation," or more specifically as "accompaniment to cooking, eating, sculpting, exercising, high stakes poker, soaking, panoramic landscapes, cuddling, car chases, drawing, knitting, bandaging, romance, playing chess, or planning the rest of your [...]

(Jason continues to breathe air into this blog while a rather busy time for work keeps me from doing much other than eating and sleeping.) I've been really delighted with Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music series, a set of instrumental albums designed by the label "for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office, or personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elevation," with specific uses such as "accompaniment to cooking, eating, sculpting, exercising, high stakes [...]

Sufjan Stevens ' month of October could not be more impressive yet clandestine at the same time. While everyone is expecting Sufjan to continue his gimmick of writing an album for every state, he is instead releasing two instrumental albums in the month of October and a contributed heavily to a third instrumental album to be released in December. These releases come amidst Sufjan's first tour in over twelve months, though Stevens is not performing these songs during the tour. One of these albums will be released under his name, while the other two will not. [...]
