Believe it or not, Mad Mackerel has been around for more than five years now. During that time we’ve posted more than 4,000 times, and offered more than 5,000 songs for your listening pleasure. And more than three quarters of a million people have paid MM a visit during our lifetime on Google’s (godawful) blogspot and since April 2010 on WordPress. We asked some of the regular MM contributors to give us their top twenty songs since MM first went live and we’re also going to give you one big mega-listing shortly, first up was Dr Roddy [...]

Anyone who still thinks Beach House is boring hasn’t seen how Victoria Legrand whips her hair back and forth like Kirk Hammett in sequins. Last Friday night in Baltimore, she commanded the stage with potency her hometown had never seen. It’s been three long, Beach House-less years for Charm City. But while the dream-pop duo were jetting around the world, headlining festivals, playing Letterman, and becoming so big that Jay-Z and Beyonce publicly groove to their music, they became something no one quite expected: professionals. Seeing Baltimore’s DIY crowd permeate the Lyric Opera House was a [...]

by Bill Pearis Carten Tanton spent time as a touring guitarist of The War on Drugs and later a full-on member of Lower Dens. While in the van, Tanton spent time on electronic music, releasing Freeclouds in 2011. On April 2 via Western Vinly, he'll release They're Flowers , his first record under the Luxury Liners moniker. (He's no longer in Lower Dens.) Says Tanton: This record had me stepping away [...]

Luxury Liners is the new project of former Lower Dens member Carter Tanton. On new track “Valley High”, he gets to show off a more glimmering synth-pop feel that does feel appropriate for world-traveling in your yacht. Integrating a bit of vocal samples along with his own pitch-perfect pristine delivery, this is an incredibly serene experience. The debut LP They’re Flowers will be out April 2nd on Western Vinyl and it’s up for pre-order now .

Yo La Tengo are really making the most out of 2013. They've already released their new album, Fade , to critical acclaim; performed alongside Fred Armisen on Fallon ; confirmed appearances at Wilco's Solid Sound and Ohio's Bunbery Fest ; and hit the road for a proper supporting tour . Now, the New Jersey veterans plan to keep the excitement going with even more dates. They'll head overseas in March, return stateside in April, and remain on the road until July, when [...]

If you have been reading what we have to say for a while, you might have run across some Carter Tanton around here. His 2011 album, Freeclouds , was one that we posted three or four singles from, and yet I never got around to getting a copy, despite my enjoyment of each song I heard from it. That oversight on my part aside, Tanton is back with a new album and a new moniker he's recording under. Now going by Luxury Liners, Tanton's new album is entitled They're Flowers , which is slated for release on April [...]

As Baltimore's Secret Mountains get ready to release their debut album Rainer on February 26th, anticipation is beginning to get the better of us. Back in 2009 the band dropped their debut EP Kaddish and then followed it up with 20102s Rejoice and 20122s Winter Sessions , both also EPs, all reveling in the dark, swirling, emotive soundscape they've carved out for themselves. As their EPs make way for [...]

Time for a little bit of aural time travel. Let's look back, reflect, and contemplate... what were we listening to one year ago ? Listen to the February 2012 One Year Ago Mix and find out. You can stream (and scrobble ) all the songs in this mix using the ex.fm player at the bottom of the page OR you can just download any or all of the tracks at your leisure and play them using a digital media player of your choice. You'll doubtless already be only too aware of Baltimore's insatiable proclivity for dream-pop – go figure. Or rather, go find a Beach House review devoid of the term dream or any given synonym thereof. Still searching, and indeed I've been scouring both high and low for something to if not shatter the mould entirely, then at to at least reset its shape a touch. And lo and behold, call off the inquisition for right before us we've Celebration – a Maryland sextet again trading in the nebulous and loosely oneiric, [...]

Geçen yıldan yazılmamış konser/seyahat kalmasın motivasyonu var (ve bu bize bir Kopenhag gezi yazısı getirecek) ama Lower Dens konserini yazmadan rahat edememem yalnız bundan değil. Teksas’ta doğup Baltimore’a göç eden müzisyen Jana Hunter ‘ın 2010’da kurduğu Lower Dens, ilk albümleri Twin-Hand Movement ‘tan beri çamurlu sound’uyla kulağımda dönüp duruyor.

"A standout on one of the year’s best debuts, 'Doused' is an intricate rock song that manages to sound different from just about anything else out there. With a guitar riff that hauntingly pervades the whole song and vocals that are only partly discernable, DIIV has created a benchmark for their future recordings, a lofty standard that their next songs will be measured against." I was waiting to see if the world ended, before I posted this - thought it could save me some time - but here we still sit. It's Christmas morning, everyone's already done a list of some sort and I was hoping the list-y dust would settle before I posted mine. Happy Yule to y'all! The last half of this year for me sucked donkeys for a variety of intense, life-changing personal reasons. Admittedly, my output on BSR took a bit of a hit while I was struggling with real life. But in 2012 music was here, there [...]
Sunday Morning Medicine is a feature from Dancing Astronaut dedicated to the mellower side of electronic music. We bring you our favorite therapeutic selections — old and new — in an attempt to alleviate the agonizing effects of a long weekend of partying. This week features Poolside's exceptional rework of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," Bicep and Ejeca's modern '90s track "You," Something Good's free original "Colors," Trentmøller's remix of "Brains," and Nicolas Jaar's groundbreaking essential mix. If you missed any of DA 's more chilled out posts from the week, make sure to check out [...]
It's Friday, which means that this week is nearly over and it's nearly time for the holidays — woo hoo, etc. — and also that it's time to survey the various new tracks that caught our fancy this week. (If you missed our post last week, we're temporarily replacing our regular MP3 post with a more general roundup of new music, as downloads are few and far between at this time of year.) Anyway, this week we get into the festive spirit with, um, a new track from Grouper. There's also The xx covering Wham! (you'll NEVER GUESS which song), [...]

Quest'anno abbiamo aspettato davvero fino all'ultimo minuto. Eccovi dunque [...]
![[Listen] Lower Dens: "Candy" (Steve Moore Remix)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4682954_lg.jpg)
