Usually when I see something titled “Brains,” zombies quickly come to mind. Unfortunately, Jana Hunter and the Lower Dens ’ take on “Brains” has nothing to do with zombies. But the song does merit plenty of attention. The group just announced via Facebook and Twitter that they’ve finished up their sophomore release, Nootropics . “Brains” is the first taste off that album, and the group is giving it away for free on their website . This sneak peak preps us for something a little more synthy than one might expect, but still within [...]
Toss Lower Dens in to the pile of bands that I completely missed out on via their first pass and am now constantly reminding myself to pick up their album and then never doing so. This new track, "Brains" is so beautifully monotonous - the same quiet guitar and drum looming in the background of [...]
Baltimorean songwriter Jana Hunter and her band of the haze-bending bearded dudes in Lower Dens are back after their fantastic 2010 record Twin Hand Movement and a well-deserved break with another equally fantastic lead-in single to their upcoming record Nootropics . “Brains” is five minutes of awesome Kraut-y, motorik groove, chugging, interlocking drums and bass underlying dizzying, hazy guitar interplay and Hunter’s murmured, creepy-charming vocals. It’s flawlessly layered, flawlessly mixed, a hypnotizing, immersive cut – we’ll probably keel over dead if the rest of the record is so good. Nootropics is out May [...]

Lower Dens – “Brains” Jana Hunter of Baltimore band Lower Dens has consistently been releasing some of my favorite music for the past 7 years, from two solo albums ( Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom , and There’s No Home ) to Lower Dens’ 2010 debut LP Twin-Hand Movement and their fantastic 2011 single Batman (one of my favorite songs of 2011 ). Lower Dens have just announced a new record, [...]

Jeremy Balderson At first, it's hard to imagine what need there is for a Craig Finn solo album. After all, he gets to run roughshod over The Hold Steady records with as many words as he can manage to pair with their classic rock attack - has he really got a backlog of ideas that don't fit that broad and welcoming template? As Clear Heart, Full Eyes , out next Tuesday but now available to stream in whole at NPR demonstrates, yeah he does. [...]

Here is our round-up of the best new tracks and releases we've collected from our in-box, our favourite blogs and the internet. This time we have the the sultry and gently hypnotic folk of Cate Le Bon , the raucous, boozy new track from John McCauley's latest roots supergroup Diamond Rugs , the brilliantly hypnotic and menacing track from experimental folksters Lower Dens , more enchantment and swirling, celestial folk from Julianna Barwick , some perfect Primitives style indie jangle from Strawberry Whiplash , and for contrast the brooding, gothic indie of [...]

Baltimore-based new wave outfit Lower Dens are gearing up to release their follow-up to 2010s Twin-Hand Movement , titled Nootropics , on May1st, and today, the group released the first single from the album. The track, titled "Brains," is described by the band as one that " examines our relationship to technology, in particular artificial intelligence and is the perfect entryway into Nootropics ' vast and meticulous vision." Fitting then, that they have described their upcoming studio effort as " a reference to Lower Dens' interest in transhumanism -- the use [...]
On the heels of one very well-received album (20102s Twin-Hand Movement) and one killer 73 for Sub Pop (20112s "Deer Knives"/"Tangiers"), Baltimore's Lower Dens return with a new full length and a heavy theme. The band's forthcoming release, Nootropics, is said center on the ways in which technology could be used to expand human capabilities. Hmm...Well...Ok, I'll bite. Indie rock has a solid history of human/machine concept albums (See Radiohead's OK Computer and Grandaddy's Sophtware Slump) and judging by the first single, "Brains," the inclusion of more electronic music elements, like motorik rhythms, into their custom blend of [...]

I'll have to thank my facebook news feed for this one as I saw multiple posts about a new Lower Dens song. I have been waiting for quite some time for some new Lower Dens. I'm a huge fan, so this is pretty exciting. Lower Dens’ second LP Nootropics is out May 1st via Ribbon Music . If this track is any indication of what to expect, it certainly feels more anxious, with rapidly cyclical waves, layered vocals and a pulsing beat. Listen below. [...]

MP3: Lower Dens - Brains A new Lower Dens album in 2012? That's great news! They're calling it Nootropics and Ribbon Music is going to release it May 1st! But first - a single! "Brains" is the first peek of this highly anticipated beast and it will debut as a double 10" (with album track "Propagation" and b-side "Hours" along for the ride) which you can pre-order now - that's the art for it above. [...]
Listen to five minutes of epic and pounding happiness. " Brains " is the new single by Baltimore's Lower Dens and the first forerunner to their forthcoming new album, coming out on April 30 via Ribbon Music , in the US on May 1. First single " Brains " also gets an earlier 103 release . From 3:30 it's so epic. Turn up to eleven! Lower Dens - Facebook Lower Dens - Homepage

While the above artwork accompanying the below stream of Lower Dens' forthcoming single Brains may suggest a seismic shift in the Baltimore outfit's general interests and genuine intentions (a veer towards stadium-shaped arenas of the hopelessly soulless perhaps), any such trepidation is soon allayed as Jana Hunter's inimitably comforting baritone soothes through the core of five rock-solid minutes. Perhaps more abstract than the material encased within beauteous debut full-length Twin-Hand Movement (transhumanism now apparently accounts for a paramount influence), they remain as dynamic, diligent, and serenely efficient as ever, Nate Nelson's clicking hi-hats propelling vague washes of slackened [...]
Not much is said about the new album from Lower Dens but we know it is called Nootropics. Along with that, a single from Nootropics is titled "Brains". This new track shuffles like you are fast forwarding through cycles of life. "Brains" starts with a mild escalation of instrumentals, followed by murky vocals which is later shaded by different experimental machines. Lower Dens are four indie men and Jana Hunter from Baltimore, Maryland. On Facebook, their biography says they are "dark nerds" and from the likes of Salem and Astal Eye s, [...]
