SXSW only got crazier as nights went on. Here's the second batch of shows I saw on the second and third days of the Music Festival. The Dodos - Wednesday (Official at the Parish). The Dodos are one of my favorite bands from San Francisco and actually are really nice people. They are freak folk [...]

Frank Yang I went into this year's SxSW with a shorter than usual list of must-see acts, not necessarily because there wasn't as much I was keen on seeing but because I just didn't have the time to do a lot of research leading up to the festival - hence my frequent "what am I going to go see now?" moments throughout the week. One of those on the list, and who had been on my to-see list be it at SxSW or anywhere else, was Baltimore's Lower Dens . Their debut [...]
Sludging through the ever-expanding assortment of year-end lists feels like a second job by mid-December. Having said that, I've never not come away with at least a few new favorites that I either missed entirely or blew off over the previous twelve months. Case in point, last year I was rewarded with Lower Dens' LP [...]

It's the weekend of SXSW. Maybe you're there, like Katie, soaking up the good music, having a lonestar and rubbing elbows with other music-lovers. But you might not be there, like Alyssa, who is instead about to run for the border, (literally.) Either way, the requests came in from several Steam Co readers, and their request was epic: GIVE ME SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST they said. And so it was. "Smith Westerns - Perfect in My Mind" "Ellie Goulding - Lights" "Lower Dens - Blue [...]
Celebrating its 25th anniversary year, SXSW is an indie and alternative rock lover's paradise, a non-stop marathon of venues and bands, including more top notch artists per square mile during SXSW than probably any other locale in the world, except perhaps NYC during October's CMJ. The SXSW Experience SXSW is where bands are born, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Lower Dens Live Review: Deerhunter, Lower Dens March 13, 2011, The Earl, Atlanta by Denton Poteet When Wye Oak canceled their scheduled performance at The Earl sometime late Sunday afternoon, it looked bleak for tourmates and fellow Baltimore residents Lower Dens as Callers had also had to cancel due to illness. In an alternate reality, they would have been bumped up to headliner status, with a pair of available locals thrown in to fill out the bill. Of course, with so [...]
This site aims to emphasize newer releases, many of which have not been released yet. Several times though, I feel an artist is so criminally under-exposed and relevant to today’s scene that a feature just begs to come out. One of 20102s most talked-about albums was Twin Shadow's Forget, a wonderful hybrid of post-punk and [...]

"Can I curse, is that okay?" lead singer/guitarist Jenn Wasner asked coyly, acknowledging that her band Wye Oak 's performance was being streamed live on NPR Music's Web site . Wasner didn't seem sure of her footing and wanted someone "with authority" to tell her, because she was smart enough to know what the response of a crowd at an indie-rock show would be. "I don't know about you guys, somebody back there," Wasner said, at least half-seriously. All Songs Considered producer Robin Hilton, filling in that night for regular host Bob Boilen, shrugged off the [...]

Some more half decent, decent, and downright entertaining videos for you to check out. The Agitator's new single Say NO! is a politically charged call to arms set against an equally radical new musical style. Not a guitar in sight, just front man Derek Meins’ force-of-nature voice accompanied by Robert Dylan Thomas and T-Train on thunderous double drums. Pared down and primal! a Bergen, Norway-based four-piece The Megaphonic Thrift have released a brand [...]

These pictures are almost already a week old, so I'll be brief. I was so pleased to find out that Lower Dens was headlining a show at MHOW, and even more pleased when I saw that the venue was almost nearly full for them. I'm not even sure how it happened. It was only two years ago that I saw Jana Hunter for the first time, by accident, in the back yard of Beauty Bar at SXSW. I was IMMEDIATELY captivated and I remember very clearly making a frantic trip to the ATM, paying a $4 surcharge, and just making [...]

Britt Lundborg reports: Baltimore is having a big year, music-wise. Beach House touring the globe, pulling all kinds of “Best of Year” lists, and now Lower Dens following in their footsteps. Lower Dens, a foursome with a seemingly un-ambitious M.O., but a stellar, sweeping sound played Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night. They come across as completely unassuming, but don't let that fool you. And don't let that put you off either. Fronted by the very talented [...]

Force Field PR has teamed up with Terrorbird to bring a fantastic free party that does not require a badge at SXSW on March 16th at the indoor / outdoor venue Red 7.
