Every December Cody Ground from Austin band Loxsly sends me a fresh new Christmas song. Pithy little numbers they are too, taking a slanted view of the season of goodwill. The little tykes give our Christmas compilations an alternate narration so even though it is only August I'm already looking forward to this year's gift. Of course Loxsly do other stuff when there's no snow on the ground – 3 releases in as many years to be precise. This one is taken from their 2008 debut 'Flashlights' and is indicative of their nifty melodies and gift for a memorable lyric. [...]

Sometimes a band needs a shake-up, and sometimes a name change is the perfect catalyst. Royal Forest wasn't always this band's name; no, they were once called Loxsly. With the new name, Royal Forest sheds the past and reinvents themselves with a slightly updated sound that hints of a little math-rock and a curious Texas-inspired blend of folk and pop that's a bit further away from their hometown heroes Spoon than their previous work, though the "syncopated snares" remain. Opening track to their self-titled debut (under this moniker), Royal [...]

Its here! The 2009 Music Playlist for Christmas! Now I wish I could take credit for this awesome compilation of chill songs but it was really the guys from Indiecater Records that made this possible! After their success with their first Christmas album last year, they decided to step it up a notch and improve their selection for 2009. Most of the songs on this collection were written especially for the occasion and even includes bands we had previously covered like Adam and Darcie You can stream the songs [...]

There was no shortage of a variety of good, fresh food wherever we visited in China. A small grocery store around the corner from our hostel in Beijing carried an amazing assortment of chicken and duck eggs; and while their produce was not great, right outside in the alley was a huge selection of fruits and vegetables (first photo in the gallery). Above, smarmy advertising looks the same everywhere! Grocery shopping in China [...]

Our friends over at Party Ends have a sweet show planned for Saturday night at Club de Ville here in Austin. The all local lineup includes up and comers LA Snacks , Deleted Scenes , Loxsly and a DJ set by John Gross. Show starts at 9pm. I've always been a big fan of the music video, probably because when I was growing up MTV actually played them on a regular basis and at that time my beloved glam metal dominated the airwaves. Yes kids, long before there was Carson Daly and TRL, there was Adam Curry and Dial MTV. Back when I used to watch, the daily countdown was a veritable who's who of hair bands, with bands like Poison, White Lion, Warrant, and Def Leppard dominating video landscape and virtually every single released was accompanied by some sort of visual interpretation. I'm not sure what [...]

Lots of great releases this week, which include two highly anticipated albums from both Grizzly Bear and Phoenix . Definitely worth picking each of these up as they each live up to lofty expectations, and I'm sure they will be populating many people's year-end lists. A few other interesting releases include Black Moth Super Rainbow's Eating Us and Viva Voce's Rose City . Anything else worth picking up this week? Let us know if we happened to leave off anything! Another week comes to a close with yet another Ten Tracks You Need Post. What more really needs to be said? Well to sum it all up, we've got a few bonus tracks this week that are all zipped up and ready to go. This weeks RCRD LBL selections were kind of slim because there wasn't that much cool stuff that came through over the past week. However, there is a cool DJ Koze podcast from Fairtilizer that should help make up for the lack of tracks. A few videos stumbled in this week as well; they come to us [...]
