Lucero – Texas & Tennessee album review

Lucero – Texas & Tennessee album review If there's an adjective that could unarguably be used to describe Memphis-based country/punk rock band, "Lucero" it certainly is "hard-working." They have played 150 to 200 shows a year since 2001 across the United States and Canada. They also have released 10 full length albums, and have recently released their first EP entitled "Texas & Tennessee." It's worth noting that this is the second time the band has referenced Tennessee in the title of one of their releases, as their 2002 release was entitled "Tennessee." In Texas & Tennessee, the band mostly abandons the electric [...]

LUCERO–TEXAS & TENNESSEE EP

LUCERO–TEXAS & TENNESSEE EP The dominant narrative will likely go: Lucero's new mostly acoustic EP Texas & Tennessee  is a return to "Old Lucero"-another batch of the chest-twisting hooks of "Raising Hell" and the suppressed sobs dug out in "Slow Dancing." However, I find the Old/New Lucero dichotomy uninteresting and unproductive. What I think is interesting is a discussion of how the title song "Texas & Tennessee" relates to a 1928 Jimmie Rodgers blue yodel called "T for Texas" which contains the lyrics "' T' for Texas, 'T' for Tennessee / 'T' for Thelma, the gal that made a wreck of me. " [...]

Rick Steff of Lucero: The TVD Interview

Rick Steff of Lucero: The TVD Interview Rick Steff of Lucero has come out with a three-song EP on Archer Records , "Rick's Booogie"  (additional "o" an' all). I caught up with him at one of the Illinois Lucero shows to talk about the makings of his EP, and what it was like to have his fellow Lucero members backing up one of his projects. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Steff is easily one of the nicest men alive anywhere, much less in music, and genuinely one of the most skilled [...]

Work: Women & Work

Women & Work (Official Video)
[ purchase ] We generally try to stay away from newer music here, but this one was too obvious for me to pass on. “Women & Work” by Lucero is another song which portrays work as a negative, something to fight your way through, and something that makes you need to drink. The song generally equates women with work, although the narrator concedes that women are sweeter, a sentiment that I certainly can agree with. Personally, I’ve had better luck with the woman in my life than in most of my jobs, although I’m hoping [...]

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Lucero at the 9:30 Club, 3/20

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Lucero at the 9:30 Club, 3/20 I've been reading a lot about Lucero shows lately. (It's kind of my job .) It seems they've been particularly rowdy lately, and it seems people have been really diggin' 'em that way. This got me thinking, "Where have I seen the rowdiest Lucero shows?" to which I answered myself (because geniuses answer themselves, ya know), "Easy: Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington DC." Bikinis, Bobcats, and vandalism? Rowdy. If you're one of those folks who [...]

PHOTOS: MUSINK (DAY 3) W/REVEREND HORTON HEAT + LUCERO + JONNY TWO BAGS @OC FAIRGROUNDS

PHOTOS: MUSINK (DAY 3) W/REVEREND HORTON HEAT + LUCERO + JONNY TWO BAGS @OC FAIRGROUNDS Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi The third night of MUSINK gave the security guards some reprieve, as the tattoo/music festival closed the weekend out with a couple of non-SoCal acts: Memphis-based group Lucero and Dallas trio Reverend Horton Heat. Reverend Horton Heat's headlining, hour long set was succinct, leaving little room for quippy stage banter. The "showboating" that one usually sees still remained, and was infectious and entertaining as always. No matter how many times you've seen the group, they always manage to put you in a good mood. Deke Dickerson, last seen at [...]

Punk Rock Weekend @ the Mohawk with Lucero and ALL

Punk Rock Weekend @ the Mohawk with Lucero and ALL Man, I'm bummed I'm going to be out of town this weekend, as the Mohawk line-up is killing it.  First, Friday night features Lucero , who may not exactly be purveyors of punk due to their folk sound.  But, you can't tell me vocalist Ben doesn't have that raspy punk pull in his voice.  And, if you want to stick around, East Cameron Folkcore will tear it up inside...who also have a vocal likeness to my punk heritage.  And, if that wasn't enough on Friday, Saturday night you can see the great ALL.   The group [...]

No Honor Among Mixtapes #7

The Cargo Culte lay in a collection of mixes that BaddBob and I began sharing in the late fall and winter of 2008. A few scant months after the banking meltdown I found myself back in Los Angeles after eight years of wandering, living off of unemployment. BaddBob a behind the scenes guy in television [...]
