"We used to drive Thru Lafayette and Baton Rouge In a yellow El Camino Listening to Howling Wolf..." -Lucinda Williams -"Lake Charles" If you grew up, as I did, in the U.S. in the you probably have fond (or other) memories of the Chevrolet El Camino. You couldn't go far in the American South or ...

No new music to share right now, instead I'm going to share how excited I am to be seeing two great shows taking place this summer. Not to rub it in or anything but... The first show I've already made plans to see is in mid July to see a triple decker of a summer tour: John Mayer , Brett Dennen , and Colbie Caillat . Yea, you read that right. You've got an accomplished guitarist who's tackled everyone from Radiohead [...]

"I saw that photograph of the men standing around the pool table, and read that phrase, '2-Kool 2-Be 4-Gotten,' and the inspiration was obvious. Every time I sing that song I credit Birney Imes. Birney's work is, in photography, what a good blues song is to me-gritty, edgy in all its parallels." -Lucinda Williams This record is ten years old now. It sounds as good to me now as it did then. I remember how thrilled I was when I made the connection between the record I was listening to and the book of [...]
Smithsonian Folkways has issued an amazing and varied collection of music. Some are from different countries, others are by individual artists and some are compilations. They have also issued several different series developed from this treasure trove. One of these is called Classic from Smithsonian Folkways. You can find Classic African American Ballads, Classic Canadian Music, Classic Folk Music and the CD both these songs are from, Classic Blues From Smithsonian Folkways. There are too many more Classics to list, but I have many of them. They are a wealth of music. They are treasures. [...]

Yesterday's post on For The Sake Of The Song , told the unfortunate story of a man under a court order to buy 124,000 roses for his wife. After reading the post I was surprised to find 47 different rose songs on my i-pod. No other flower comes close, not even "flower" itself. Flower = 24 Daisy = 5 Lily = 4 Blossom = 4 Orchid = 3 Tulip = 1 Dandelion = 1 Violet = 1 Obviously the rose is a popular symbol--especially in country songs. Maybe it has something to do [...]

Lucinda Williams: Crescent City [ out of print ] Lucinda Williams has one album that I really love, her self-titled album from 1988 . The songwriting is sharp and the delivery is heartfelt without going over the top. The only "problem" is the 1980's-style production in spots, but it's definitely worth tracking down. This town has said what it has to say. Now I'm after that back highway, and the longest bridge I've ever crossed, over Ponchartrain... Discuss...

"Suddenly it hit me - I got paid this Friday last, and so I rifled through my pockets for some change. But all I found was a packet of broken cigarettes and a sinking sense of shame." -Frank Turner - "The Real Damage" Just a reminder of where we are in the countdown: 10. ...
Hi folks. I started compiling my favorite songs of the year list (an annual tradition that generally takes me at least a week), and between that and the last Jock Jams installment I almost didn't get to post today's mix. But it's still Monday (11:47 PM, but still Monday.) It's freezing in my apartment and I haven't had any dinner, hence this mix being a little bit edgy and bleak. Still, the guy you're nailing is sure to like it. And, if you like any of the songs, you should go out and buy [...]

Some time ago, in an epic battle possibly involving our Founding Fathers, the good ol' U.S.A. took on some Mexican general/war lord named Montezuma. I'm not exactly clear on the details of this whole thing, but I do know that whoever this Montezuma character was, we kicked his ass. It may or may not have involved some trickery. However it was done, dude was pissed off. The victory seemed to ensure our country's dominance over our southern neighbors. Now, as a "revenge", this Montezuma character torments our aqua-drinking citizens with a torrid case of the shits whenever they venture into [...]
Lucinda Williams covering Bob Dylan. Positively 4th Street nlm0.0mln [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

While we on the subject of it's even better live... Lucinda Williams has put out some amazing studio albums, but they don't come close to reproducing who she is. Live, she can be almost difficult to watch, because she lays herself out there so raw you feel like you shouldn't be peeking. Lucinda Williams - Those Three Days from the double-disc-you-gotta-have-it Live @ The Fillmore ( insound / amazon / itunes )

Chuck is simply the most unknown yet often heard man in music. He sings, plays just about every instrument under the sun and produces records. You can't throw a rock in Americana music without hitting someone who has played with, been produced by or dated Charlie. Here is a smattering of tunes he has been involved with. As a performer: Charlie Sexton Sextet ~ Plain Bad Luck and Innocent Mistakes Charlie Sexton ~ Cruel and Gentle Things Bob Dylan ~ Summer Days [...]
