Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! You'd think this would mean that there would be a bunch of romantic releases coming out this week, right? Eh, not so much, but that doesn't mean there are some great records in stores this Tuesday! This is clearly a week for independent labels. We've pictured Busdriver 's Beaus$Eros ; the album has been out digitally for a while but comes out in physical form this week. There are also new records from Lucky Dragons , Young Magic , and Band of Skulls . Doe Paoro also makes a [...]

If there is an LVMH of Boston indie rock, then surely it is Midriff Records. The venerable label, home to indie rock luminaries including The Beatings , Age Rings and Greg Lyon , celebrates this year its 10th anniversary with a number of events, including a monthly residency at Somerville's Radio that begins tomorrow. The inaugural evening features Eldridge Rodriguez , the aforementioned Mr. Lyon and new signees Lucky Dragon and M.G. Lederman onstage upstairs, while magician and escape artist Eric Robitaille will do his thing downstairs at Moe's [...]

Lucky Dragons - Existers God, this Los Angeles duo is probably the top band on my list of "artists I must see live" for more than 8 years, but I have yet to be graced with their gorgeous experimental joy parade. Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck make such fanciful music - always fresh and original - some of the most inventive compositions happening. This new work does not disappoint. Look for the new Existers EP - a collaborative effort with artist/designer [...]

Lucky Dragons – "Existers" L.A. experimental/avant-pop duo Lucky Dragons ( ♥ and one of my personal favorite bands ♥) are releasing a new LP, Existers , on Brooklyn label Swill Children . They've released the title track from the new record, a nearly 7 minute long song which is quite rare coming from Lucky Dragons. It's a must-listen, regardless, and this album is one of my most anticipated releases of [...]
Next month, the L.A. spacey-drift duo Lucky Dragons will release a seven-song mini-album called EXISTERS , and they're selling it by using the pay-what-you-want model. (You have to drop at least a dollar, but that's still a deal.) Right now, they're giving away the album-opening title track, a seven-minute hazy reverie. Grab it below. Read More...

In Aldous Huxley's psychedelic memoir,"The Doors of Perception", he comments on the beauty and mystery of the network of leaves surrounding a flower, over the celebrated blossom itself. The idea is that an expanded mind will be drawn to more subtle patterns and tones, as opposed to grandiose aesthetic flourishes. "A Ray Array," the new experimental film by Lucky Dragons member Sara Rara, provides a lens for these details. The 58 minute film explores the idea of interference through visual ruptures, interactions between two sound signals, and optical illusions. The piece (which was scored by Rara and partner Luke Fishbeck [...]

Along the lines of the awesome regionally-focused compilation series started earlier this year, blended with the SubPop Singles idea - comes Davis/Sacramento label KDVS Recordings ' newest project, the Cassetteofthemonth Subscription Club . Members can opt in at any time, but beginning this past October, a $40 subscription will grant one split cassette per month, side one being a Davis or Sacramento band and side two, a band from just about anywhere. A list of participating bands is announced, but is still growing. Psychic Reality will contribute a cassette side [...]

Dan Deacon. Photos by Amy Darling. For the 6 th anniversary of Sean Carnage Mondays, the crowd was the most packed I'd ever witnessed at Pehrspace, with lines circling the parking lot and some people waiting for hours to get in for a taste of special guests Dan Deacon and Future Islands. While it was great to see so many new faces, I have to admit relief at the sight of all of the regulars in the crowd, the people who week after week return to Pehrspace loyally on Monday nights for the eclectic and [...]

With festivals every single weekend, it's hard to imagine that any one could be that different from the rest. But if nothing else, Chicago's two-year old Neon Marshmallow Festival proves that assumption so very wrong. The noise/drone/electronic/general ly avant-garde acts that pummeled the crowd for three nights won't be filling out even the earliest of slots at Coachella or Lollapalooza, and the fans who filed into work Monday morning with damaged ear drums and huge grins on their faces wouldn't want it any other way. Neon Marshmallow is, in a word, weird. In two words, delightfully weird. [...]

As I'm sure you're all aware, tomorrow marks the dawning of the Rapture (6 P.M. Eastern Standard Time), in which believers will be whisked off to eternal salvation while the earth's tainted masses (see: atheists, mimes, music bloggers) will be sentenced to 5 months of pestilence, famine, and other vaguely unfavorable things. Because you'll need a kickin' rad soundtrack to spin while the locusts devour you whole, we've assembled Repent! , a mix of 17 songs steeped in that sweet End Times Flavor™. Enjoy, and pick up a t-shirt while you're at it. [...]
